Is Antropov Worth $5M?

Sather meanwhile categorized the contract demands from impending unrestricted free agent Nik Antropov, whom the Blueshirts acquired from Toronto at the deadline for a second-round pick, as “ridiculous.”

“Based on the first volley from [agent] Mark Gandler, there is a slim chance [of Antropov returning],” the general manager said following the fifth round of the Entry Draft. “There’s a snowball’s chance in hell that’s going to happen. It’s ridiculous. I hate to criticize an agent, but let’s have a little bit of reality here.”

Antropov, who scored seven goals in 18 regular-season games for the Blueshirts but was barely a factor in the first-round defeat by Washington, earned $2.05 million last year. He’s believed seeking a long-term deal for at least $5 million per. Good luck to him.

The Difference Between The Leafs & Rangers

Nik Antropov wants to stress that he is not slagging the Maple Leafs.

At the same time, the veteran forward admits noticing a difference between his former team and the New York Rangers, the squad he was shipped to at the trade deadline two weeks ago.

“The whole team is really close here,” Antropov said in a phone interview. “That’s something we never really had in Toronto the past few years.

“One of the reasons is all the new faces we had with the Leafs in the last two or three years. And then there were different coaches, different systems. That all plays a part in it.

“It’s not a shot at Toronto. I loved my time there. But I did notice the difference when I got here.”

Avery Back To His Old Antics According To Flyers Coach

Avery got into the Flyers’ heads early in confronting Jeff Carter-What; touch Philadelphia’s 38-goal-scorer???-and the Flyers not only never got over it, they responded in their historical nature by trying to take off their opponents’ heads, witness the Braydon Coburn match penalty of a high stick across Nik Antropov’s face late in the second.

“We got emotional and used it the wrong way,” said Flyers’ head coach John Stevens. “I think [Avery’s] probation period is over and now he’s back to his old antics and we got sucked in, to be quite honest.

Can Antropov Be The Answer?

If it’s impossible to know what the Rangers truly have surrendered for 18 regular-season games of Antropov, it’s nearly as difficult to know what Leafs GM Brian Burke sent Glen Sather’s way at Wednesday’s deadline, because Antropov has long been one of the NHL’s biggest mysteries, aside from his 6-foot-6 frame.

Tomorrow afternoon should provide a clue about what the Rangers have when Antropov goes against Boston’s 6-foot-9 Zdeno Chara at the Garden in one of those nationally televised games that have been habitual debacles for Broadway’s team.

Antropov May Move To Center

Nik Antropov could go from a nobody to No. 1 centre in less than a year.

The 6-foot-6 Kazakh is aware of the Maple Leafs’ proposed training camp experiment, and though he’s not practising ceremonial faceoffs while Mats Sundin is still in the mix, Antropov won’t turn down the chance to be the first line’s engine.

“It would take a while to get used to playing there again,” Antropov said yesterday. “I heard from my friends last week that (general manager Cliff Fletcher and coach Ron Wilson) were talking about me at centre. We’ll see. A lot can happen in camp with the forward lines.”

Antropov A Wanted Man

With defenceman Tomas Kaberle insisting he is not going anywhere, echoing the same sentiments as the other four members of the Maple Leafs “no-trade clause” fraternity, Antropov might very well be the most legitimate candidate to be moved by the Feb. 26 trade deadline.

In the prime of his career at age 28, Antropov’s value never has been higher. He’s managed to stickhandle his way around the injury bug for a change while reaching a career-high 21 goals, attractive traits for teams in the market for a hulking power forward.

Anyone Want Antropov

Just as he had no choice but to accept his suspension, he would also have no choice but to accept his fate if he were traded. Antropov may be among the most vulnerable of Leaf stalwarts.

Teams looking to load up for a run at the playoffs will consider he earns a reasonable $1.95 million (U.S.) a year, he’s signed for next season, he’s having a career year, and, perhaps most importantly, he doesn’t have a no-trade clause. He says he wants to stay.

“Of course,” says Antropov. “But it’s not up to me. Ask Cliff Fletcher.”

Not A Sure Thing

It’s a classic example of how enamored NHL clubs can be of teenage players one moment, and how anxious they can be to dump the same players soon after.

And how there’s absolutely no guarantee that young players pressed into NHL service before their 20th birthdays are so talented that they’ll turn into stars like Sidney Crosby, or so hastily promoted that they’ll end up enormous busts like Alexandre Daigle.

The truth is, it usually takes years for either scenario to play out.

Both Vincent Lecavalier and Nik Antropov, you may recall, were drafted into the NHL the same year (1998), one a Quebec-born Canadian and the other a prodigy from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan.

High Praise For Antropov

“I always thought Nik Antropov was a great hockey player from the first year I saw him,” Sundin said, referring to the fact Antropov has gained votes, among the media at least, as the Leafs’ best player so far.

“I saw that he was big and strong, that he had a reach and a great shot. I thought he had all the tools to be a great player.”

Antropov is now within four goals of eclipsing his previous career high of 18. He is also on pace for 40 goals, 42 assists and 82 points – all of which would smash his previous bests.
