Filatov = Zherdev?

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock and his 19-year-old rookie Nikita Filatov met for more than 10 minutes at center ice this morning as the players swirled around them. It was a fascinating scene as Hitchcock, at times tapping his stick on the ice, conveyed what’s expected of the talented Filatov.
By all accounts, it was a healthy and constructive chat.
The coach let Filatov know he would be a healthy scratch for tonight’s game. He also emphasized that Filatov needs to be more competitive on the puck. A smiling Filatov said Hitchcock told him he’s been getting “worse,’’ over the course of the four games. Never mind his ice time has been decreasing each night. Hitchcock wants Filatov thinking “quality over quantity.”
But the most interesting element—and I don’t want to reveal too much because columnist Bob Hunter will be writing about the topic for Wednesday—is that both player and coach conceded that Nikolai Zherdev has been discussed in relation to Filatov’s development.

Filatov Feels He Is Ready For The NHL

Filatov arrived in Columbus on Wednesday night. Today, he will have his physical, the first official task of Blue Jackets training camp. He will be watched closely because he is 19 years old, arguably the most talented player in the team’s stable—and unafraid to speak his mind.
Last month, Filatov caused a stir on two sides of the globe when he told a Russian journalist that he has interest in the Continental Hockey League, or KHL. Filatov said he had been approached by multiple team owners ready to throw some major rubles at him. He said that if the Jackets send him to minor-league Syracuse, he would have to think hard about playing in Russia.
Yesterday, after Filatov finished an informal workout, I sat down with him in the visitors’ locker room in Nationwide Arena. He was candid and unapologetic.
“Why wouldn’t I say this?” he asked. “If I am sent down, of course I might start thinking about it. The KHL is a higher league than the (American Hockey League).”

I’ll Stay As Long As I Play

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson doesn’t doubt the words of prized prospect Nikita Filatov, who said he would consider returning to play in Russia if he was unable to become a regular in the lineup.
“Nikita is a pretty sincere guy,” Howson said.
But he also knows what motivates the 19-year-old winger whom coach Ken Hitchcock likens to former NHL standout Pavel Bure.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s driven to be a star in the NHL,” Howson said. “That’s his No. 1 goal in the NHL.”
Last week in Moscow, the winger said he’s happy with the Jackets organization and the direction his career is headed. The only way he would consider leaving for the Russia-based Continental Hockey League (KHL) is if playing time became an issue with the Jackets.

Blue Jackets Recall Filatov

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled forward Nikita Filatov from the Syracuse Crunch, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.
Filatov, 18, recently tallied 8-3-11, six penalty minutes and was +3 in seven games for Russia at the 2009 World Junior Championships, serving as team captain and finishing among the tournament’s top goal scorers (first-tied) and point producers (fourth-tied). He was named to the All-Tournament Team and led Russia to the bronze medal.

Columbus Places Boll on IR, Recalls Filatov

The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed forward Jared Boll on injured reserve (head/neck injury) and recalled forward Nikita Filatov from the Syracuse Crunch, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, General Manager Scott Howson announced today.
Boll, who has registered 11 penalty minutes in three games this season after tallying 5-5-10 and a team-high 226 penalty minutes in 75 games as a rookie in 2007-08, is expected to be sidelined seven to 10 days. Filatov has scored two goals with a +1 plus/minus rating in two games with the Crunch, scoring goals in each of the first two games of his pro career. He tallied 1-0-1 and added a shootout game-winner in two preseason games with the Blue Jackets this year.

Filatov Will Miss Rookie Camp With Leg Injury

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nikita Filatov will be sidelined 10 to 14 days due to a lower leg injury and will miss the team’s rookie camp to be held in Traverse City, Michigan over the next five days, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.
“Nikita has an old injury that is bothering him, so he will not accompany our rookie team to Traverse City for the NHL Prospects Tournament,” said Howson. “He’ll rehab the injury here and be re-evaluated in the next 10 days to two weeks.”

Be Careful Nikita

If the Blue Jackets must lose players to injury, they would prefer it happen during the season—and while they are representing, you know, the Blue Jackets.
The franchise has asked first-round draft pick Nikita Filatov to stop playing exhibition games with the junior club of his former Russian hockey team. The Jackets made the request to ensure that the 18-year-old forward does not get injured before arriving for rookie training camp, which starts Sept. 12, general manager Scott Howson said.
Earlier this summer, second-year forward Jared Boll suffered a broken right hand playing a pickup game in Toronto.
“We knew (Filatov) was working out with the (Russian) team, but we were not aware he was playing,” Howson said. “When we became aware of it (last week), we asked him to stop and he said he would.”

Columbus Signs Filatov

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed left wing Nikita Filatov to a standard three-year entry level contract, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Filatov, 18, was the sixth overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft held at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa on June 20-21. He scored 32 goals and added 34 assists for 66 points with 90 penalty minutes in 34 games with CSKA of the Russian Junior League during the 2007-08 season. He also saw action in five games with CSKA’s Russian Elite League team and represented Russia at the 2008 World Junior Championships. He tallied 4-5-9 with 10 penalty minutes and had a +7 plus/minus rating in seven games to help Team Russia capture the bronze medal. Russia’s captain, he led the team in assists, points and plus/minus rating.
“We are very pleased that Nikita has made a strong commitment to play in North America as soon as possible,” said Howson. “He is a dynamic, talented player with outstanding offensive instincts. We look forward to seeing him in training camp this fall.”

The tug-of-war over Nikita Filatov’s services officially started Thursday morning, when the Columbus Blue Jackets signed him to a standard, NHL entry-level contract, which for the 2008 draft year, means a salary of $875,000 (U.S.) plus bonuses that could potentially triple his compensation.

KHL Wants Columbus To Pay Up

According to an article in Tuesday’s Sovietskiy Sport, KHL president and Gazprom export CEO Alexander Medvedev wants the Columbus Blue Jackets to compensate CSKA Moscow for the Jacks’ signing of 18-year-old first-round draft choice Nikita Filatov. When asked how much the compensation should come to, he answered, “At least half a million dollars.”
