Pavelec Not Happy With Jets’ Offense

from Kirk Penton of the Winnipeg Sun,

Ondrej Pavelec was frustrated with his forward teammates on Tuesday night, and his feelings hadn’t changed much on Wednesday afternoon.

The Jets starting netminder was not pleased with Winnipeg’s offensive attack during their 3-2 shootout loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday night at MTS Centre. He voiced his displeasure after the game and didn’t back down when asked about it again after Wednesday’s practice.

“I just said what I felt,” Pavelec said. “It’s not easy to score a goal in this league, and we just threw the puck away in their zone. We’re practising every day what we’re supposed to do, and we just don’t do that. It was bad to see it. We were just shooting for a rebound, and nobody’s driving to the net.”

Past the Quarter Poll: Southeast Division Team Ratings from JJ

We’re past the quarter pole, so maybe this is a bit late but it still seems like a good time to me to hand out some assessments to all five Southeast Division clubs. Besides, what’s this quarter pole anyway? Divide the NHL season in equal fours and the resting #StamkosMath calculator tells me that we’d have to stop things at the ten-minute mark of each team’s 21st game of the year to truly be one quarter of the way through. And that just seems troubling.

We’ll go with JJ Ratings rather than the standard report cards because one, everyone else seems to do the report card thing and two, handing out school-type grades gives me terrible nightmares. (Trust me.) Instead, each club’s JJ Rating will reflect their performance on a scale of one to ten (and, since I’ve become a big fan of complicating things, we’ll allow for partial points as well).

Here we are, anywhere from 26-29 games into the 2010-11 slate for the Southeast squads – as good a time as any (maybe just because I say so) to see where we are versus where we thought we’d be, as well as where we might be headed.

We’ll tackle this alphabetically (Ooh… Suspense!)

Thrashers Activate Pavelec

Atlanta - The Atlanta Thrashers have activated goaltender Ondrej Pavelec from Injured Reserve and reassigned goaltender Peter Mannino to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, according to General Manager Rick Dudley.

Pavelec, 23, started the Thrashers season-opening game on Oct. 8 vs. Washington and appeared in 2:25 of action before suffering a type of fainting spell and subsequent concussion.

Pavelec Practices

from Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Ondrej Pavelec started breaking in a new chest protector Tuesday.

His old one was cut off at the hospital 11 days ago when he lost consciousness and collapsed minutes into the Thrashers season opener.

“I was so excited to go back [on the ice] and see how it would go,” Pavelec said after taking part in half a team practice. “It was pretty good. It was only 30 minutes but I felt good.”

After a battery of tests, over days, doctors concluded that Pavelec fainted and subsequently hit his head on the ice. The goaltender said Tuesday that doctors have not determined the cause of the fainting spell.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/15/10, Plus a Look Around the Southeast this Weekend

Today’s three cheers, bestowed upon those who excelled for their clubs in action yesterday:

***Cheers to Nashville’s Steve Sullivan, who had a pair of the three first period goals for his club, en route to a 4-3 Predators win. Sullivan had a chance to complete the rare single stanza hat trick in the waning seconds of the first but was denied on a breakaway by Jaroslav Halak in the St. Louis net.

Update On Pavelec

via the Thrashers PR,

STATEMENT FROM THE THRASHERS:

Ondrej Pavelec was released from the hospital yesterday following two days of testing.  Preliminary results indicate Ondrej had a neurocardiogenic syncope episode (a type of fainting spell), which caused him to fall and hit his head on the ice, leading to the subsequent concussion and loss of consciousness.  He was cleared to return home following a battery of testing on his heart and brain.  For precautionary measures, he is undergoing further tests on his heart as well as blood and genetic testing this week.  If all goes as expected, he will be medically cleared following those results and will be available to resume playing at the conclusion of any symptoms from his concussion.

STATEMENT FROM PAVELEC:

I want to thank all the doctors, trainers and emergency personnel who took such good care of me.  I would also like to thank my teammates, all the fans and everyone in the hockey community who have reached out to me and offered their support and well-wishes over the last few days.  I hope to be back in action as soon as possible.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/09/10

In the debut of the new, daily feature from yours truly, I offer a morning toast to those who deserve as much for their performances of a night ago:

***Cheers to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, for stepping up to Anaheim’s Corey Perry and earning the decisive victory in a scrap last night. He may have taken himself out of the running for the Lady Byng Trophy in this season’s very first game but taking out a bullying Perry, in this instance, was well worth it.

Post-Kovalchuk Thrashers Deep on ‘D’, Look to New Faces and Young Guns for Offense

For the Atlanta Thrashers, a team with just one playoff appearance in ten National Hockey League seasons (and not a single post-season victory to their credit), the time for a fresh start was clearly at hand.

By first turning a negative into a positive in moving on from superstar sniper Ilya Kovalchuk late last season and then raiding the cabinet of the cap-crunched Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta begins their new era, under both a new general manager and head coach in Rick Dudley and Craig Ramsay, with a wealth of promising youth and several veterans with recent championship experience.

They may no longer boast an individual showstopper but that formula wasn’t producing a consistent winner in Blueland anyway (and that alone rarely does as much anywhere). The post-Kovalchuk Thrashers appear to be headed for greener pastures, though there will be that little issue of replacing his 45+ goals, of course.

Pavelec Goes Old-School

My face would have been buried in my catching glove, but not Pavelec.

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

“I was scared a little bit. I felt like Jacques Plante 50 years ago,” said Pavelec, a 22-year-old from the Czech Republic who’s getting a shot with oft-injured Kari Lehtonen on the shelf again. Kovalev took the shot on a wraparound after Pavelec had had his mask knocked off in a scrum late in the second period. “I can tell you now it was not fun. A little scary, but it wasn’t a hard shot. I don’t think (Kovalev) could see (he had lost his mask). It wasn’t his fault. There was no blood.”

“I softened my hands,” said Kovalev, who saw the netminder was bare-faced.

Thrashers Prospect Pavelec Will Report To Chicago Wolves

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,

The holdout is over. Thrashers goalie prospect Ondrej Pavelec will report to practice Thursday for the Chicago Wolves, his agent Allan Walsh told Sporting News. Pavelec hasn’t practiced with the team since he was assigned to Chicago by the Thrashers Saturday.

“(Thrashers G.M.) Don (Waddell) has had conversations with Ondrej, I’ve had many conversations with Don over the last three days,” Walsh said Wednesday afternoon. “I think we’ve reached a new understanding about Ondrej’s situation and with that understanding he’ll report to Chicago.”

Thrashers Goalie Prospect Refuses Demotion

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,

Ondrej Pavelec, the top prospect in the Atlanta Thrashers organization, will not be reporting to the AHL his agent told Sporting News….

Allan Walsh, Pavelec’s agent, said the Thrashers organization didn’t keep promises given to the young goalie when he signed with the team, so he wants out….

Walsh said he wouldn’t have had a problem if Pavelec had been given an honest opportunity to make the team and gotten beaten out. But he said the young goalie was never given a fair chance to the roster, something he said was part of the agreement with Atlanta.

Lehtonen Back in Practice - Goalie Surplus in Atlanta

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

“It’s been a long month, but it was great today to come here when everybody else comes and not three hours before,” Lehtonen said. “It’s fun to be a part of the team.”

And suddenly it’s a team that will have three capable goalies. According to general manager and interim head coach Don Waddell, Lehtonen’s return to the lineup won’t be rushed. In the past, he said, Lehtonen might have been hurried to action this week. But not now.

Johan Hedberg is coming off his first shutout with the Thrashers and will get the start tonight against Tampa Bay. He’s 4-0 in his last five starts and with his shutout in Carolina, dropped his goals against average to 2.38 in November.

Rookie Ondrej Pavelec is 3-1 in four starts and has a 2.71 GAA on the season. His only other loss came in a relief appearance against Ottawa.
