Tribute to a NHL Irishman

From Wild Nation:

Yes, it is the famous (or infamous) March 17th.  The day where public intoxication becomes not just acceptable, but expected.  So, we here at Wild Nation have decided to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by putting together a small tribute to our favorite Wild player and resident Irishman, Owen Nolan.

Nolan was born in Belfast, Ireland on February 12, 1972.  His family soon moved to Canada, where Nolan began playing hockey at the age of nine.

Owen Nolan Out For Friday

From the CP via TSN,

The Minnesota Wild will be without veteran forward Owen Nolan when they play the Nashville Predators on Friday.

Nolan skated Thursday but was too sore with what the team is calling upper body muscle spasms. Nolan’s 12 goals this season are just three behind team leader Mikko Koivu despite playing in 19 fewer games.

Nolan Still Playing With That Chip On His Shoulder

from Tom Powers of the Pioneer Press,

Owen Nolan plays his best when he’s a little miserable.

That’s an old-school hockey term for someone who plays with an attitude. Someone who is a bit grouchy and mean on the ice. Nolan laughed when that was mentioned after practice on Tuesday.

“It’s just something where I had that chip on my shoulder when I came up,” he said. “I’m too far along to change it.”

Nolan has been a good acquisition for the Wild. After early-season injury problems, he has hit his stride, scoring 12 goals in 31 games

Gaborik Feeling “Discomfort”

This from TSN:

The Minnesota Wild placed right wing Owen Nolan on injured reserve with a leg injury on Friday. Nolan, 36, has five goals and five assists in 17 games with the Wild this season, his first with the club.

To take his spot on the roster, Minnesota recalled center Krys Kolanos from Houston of the American Hockey League.

Wasn’t Kolanos sent down before to make room for Gaborik to come back? Or is there someone else injured in this equation now that I’m forgetting?

Maybe just Gaborik again.  According to Michael Russo at the Star Tribune:

Some potential news brewing here in Minnesota, and the first is, to quote the Seinfeld show, “not gonna be good for anybody.”

Marian Gaborik was the first one off the ice today. He ultimately admitted he feels “some discomfort” and added later after some further pressing by myself that ”If I would need to rest it, I’d definitely consider it. But I’m playing tonight and hopefully everything’s going to be good.”

As Russo goes on to explain, the situation is anything but “good.”

Wild Sign Nolan

Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough tonight announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed forward Owen Nolan to a multi-year contract.

“Owen Nolan is a true power winger who can score goals, play a physical brand, play either wing and take face-offs,” said Risebrough. “We are excited to add a player of his experience and versatility.”

Nolan Prepares To Take On Sharks

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

You can’t help but wonder if his old team as the opposition adds a new element.

“There really isn’t,” Nolan insisted. “I’m just really excited about being back in the playoffs. It’s been a while since I’ve been in it, and with the team, we have we think we can go far. We’re just excited and ready to play.”

But San Jose is the squad Nolan was front and centre with for nearly eight seasons. San Jose remains his off-season home, and he’s part-owner of a couple of establishments.

This series will be much about his old haunt and the old memories.

Or not.

Nolan Calls His Goal

from the Calgary Herald,

“Top corner, bar and in,” grinned Jarome Iginla, Nolan’s present-day teammate with the Calgary Flames and an NHL rookie at the time. “Yeah, I remember it. It was great. It was nice to see. He was calling his shot. I think Hasek had made some pretty good saves on him before that and he was saying, ‘I’ve got you this time.’ And he did. It was pretty cool. A good way to finish off a hat trick.”

“It was great,” said Nolan. “First of all, it’s an honour just to play in an all-star game. And to be able to score a goal during it and then get a hat trick in front of the home crowd? It’s too hard to explain. It was a great atmosphere when that third goal went in, I honestly thought the roof was coming in. It felt like an earthquake.”

Owen Nolan to Play 1000th NHL Game Monday Night

From the Calgary Flames,

Calgary Flames forward Owen Nolan will play in his 1000th regular season NHL game, making him the 220th NHL player to reach this prestigious milestone.

Nolan signed as a free agent this past summer with the Calgary Flames, and is one of the alternate captains for the club. He will be the third player to play his 1000th game as a Calgary Flame, joining Craig Berube and Martin Gelinas.

Nolan has played on six NHL clubs during his fifteen-year NHL career: Quebec, Colorado, San Jose, Toronto, Phoenix, and Calgary.

Flames Looking For Production From Owen Nolan

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Nolan was asked whether he sets goals for himself before the start of a new season.

“I do,” he said, “but I never tell anyone. I know I didn’t achieve them last year. I felt I had an all right season, but nowhere near what I think I can — and should do — this year.”

That assertion has to be music to the Flames’ ears, a team that has been looking for a long time to find a right winger to take some of the scoring pressure off captain Jarome Iginla.
