Patrick Kane Maturing

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
After developing a reputation as a party boy—especially after scoring the Stanley Cup-winning goal in Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup finals—Kane appears to have embraced a more pastoral lifestyle.
It’s a small thing, but with his parents and a friend in town for the All-Star proceedings, Kane insisted that team staff working over the weekend join them for dinner.
“He’s not the kid in that way that he used to be,” Bowman said.
For a period of time, photos of Kane out on the town would regularly pop up in various places on the Internet, but those occasions seem to have waned. There are few reports of excessive socializing in Chicago or on the road.
“I don’t know. I think as time goes on you start to grow up a little bit,” Kane said Friday. “I probably learned that ever since I was 18 ‘til 23, now every year, I think I get a little bit more mature and start focusing on the things that really matter in life.
“For me, I think I’m still a kid. I mean everyone likes to have their fun and do some different things away from the rink. I’ve always kind of prided myself on being myself and trying to stick true to who I am and how I was raised.”

Where’s Patrick Kane?
by Paul on 01/11/12 at 03:10 PM ET

from Steve Rosenbloom of the Chicago Tribune,
Kane finally reached double figures last week. His 10 goals for the season rank outside the top 100 in the league. Excuse me, but is he getting paid like, I don’t know, the 109th-best player in the NHL? I’ll hang up and listen for the cursing.
Kane hasn’t scored a goal in his last three games, has one goal in his last 10, two in his last 15, and three in his last 24, one of which came on the power play. He has 13 assists in that time and is a minus-7.
Kid forward Jimmy Hayes has more goals than Kane in the last three weeks, and Hayes hasn’t even been here that long.
This sounds like a rant leading to a demand that the Hawks trade Kane. But no, that is not what this is leading to. That’s not the point.
The point is that Kane either show up or be sat down.
Kane absolutely must make a difference. He has to scare teams. Too often, he looks like a peewee out there. Too often, he’s just not dangerous.

“Ever since I’ve been here, we’ve maybe beat them in the regular season and obviously lost (to them) in the (2009) playoffs, but we’ve never really dominated them or got the chance to say that we’re officially a better team than them. Even though we’ve had some ups against them in the regular season, we’ve never beaten them in the playoffs. So, it’s always fun to keep proving ourselves in games like (Friday).”

More “Bits & Pieces”
by Vince Maranto on 09/07/11 at 02:34 PM ET

Once again, in my off season struggles to come up with something to blog about, discuss with my friends, or even chat about, with some one wearing Hawks gear, I’ve only been able to come up with a few more bits and pieces. Here’s a few of them now.
On the minor league note, The Rockford Ice Hogs single game season tickets will go on sale tomorrow, Thursday, September 8th. I have not read anything about an increase in tickets prices for this season. So here’s your chance to see future Hawk stars, on the glass, for right around $25.
Now, I said I would not comment on speculation as to the return of Patrick Kane. (Kane had surgery the third week in July on his left wrist) However, Kaner spoke about his recovery and here’s what he had to say;
“I’ve always believed training camp is a real big time of year for myself to get ready for the regular season, It’s definitely something you want to use.”

TALK’N HAWKS: Player By Player #2
by Vince Maranto on 08/06/11 at 11:59 AM ET
Comments (8)
I you have been following this blog (by the way, comments from people other than Red Wings fans are also welcome) you know that I’ve been taking a player or two and giving my thoughts on them. The “Player by Player” series, if you will. Well here’s another.
Let’s tackle the Boy Wonder, Patrick Kane. I’ve never doubted the ability of this Number 1 Draft Pick, or his talent. I will remember his unusual overtime goal in Game 6 against the Flyers forever. However, he seemed to be riding that glory a little last season. I don’t know what’s in a guys head, not to mention it’s been a long time since I’ve been that age, but that’s the feel I got. One thing for sure, the honeymoon is over from the ‘10 Cup and I think Kaner knows it. For one, he is a little older - maturer, I would say yes, judging from his comments and attitude at the HAWKS Convention. His dedication, although always there, seems to be more focused.

Blackhawks head team physician Dr. Michael Terry:

From Jesse Rogers at ESPN:
Despite saying good-bye to three teammates who helped them win a Stanley Cup, at least two Chicago Blackhawks understand why Troy Brouwer, Brian Campbell and Tomas Kopecky were cut loose in favor of some tougher, older players.
“We’ve added some things that will help us win again,” Patrick Kane said Wednesday. “That’s the most important thing.
“You can have those relationships, and it’s always nice to have those, but we’re here to win hockey games. You see some of the players we added. You get a lot of grit, some experience, some maturity.”

Picking On Kane
by Paul on 04/02/11 at 08:43 AM ET
Comments (3)
from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,
Patrick Kane said he isn’t the mystery chirper who angered the Bruins’ Shawn Thornton during a game Tuesday in Boston, but the Blackhawks winger nearly paid the price for it anyway.
“I didn’t say anything,” Kane said Friday night before the Hawks played the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. “You have the wrong guy on that one.”
Thornton was upset at something that was said as he made his way to the bench after suffering a deep gash on his forehead that took 40 stitches to close. Several of the Bruins apparently thought Kane was the culprit and confronted the 5-foot-10, 178-pound winger.
“I was going out for the (next) faceoff and the next thing I know three guys are around me,” said Kane, who has not been in a fight in his four NHL seasons. “I don’t know if they thought I said it or what. I was like, ‘What did I do to deserve this?’”

Final Thoughts on Raleigh and All-Star Weekend
by Jon Jordan on 02/01/11 at 01:44 PM ET
Comments (2)
The intent of my trip to Raleigh for coverage of All-Star Weekend was simple: Get a feel for the experience from a professional perspective as well as monitor the pulse of the fans, chat up some players I don’t get to see all that often and also those I see on a regular basis in a different element, do some networking and, as Boss Man Paul continually reminded me to do throughout the weekend, have a little fun.
Looking back, that final component is exactly what I’ll remember most about the adventure and my guess is that most that attended All-Star Weekend – be they fans, players, media, league execs, sponsors or those belonging to some other miscellaneous category – would probably say the same thing.
Raleigh, as many others have opined before me, did a wonderful job as a host. The locals were as excited for the event as they were prepared, welcoming, happy and proud of their city, as well they should be. I’d never spent any significant time in these parts in the past but it will definitely be worth another stop in the future.
This being my first big league event, I had consulted with several people who have experienced something of this nature in the past in the weeks leading up to the trip and, while a few cautioned that an occasion of this magnitude could be slightly intimidating at times, I didn’t find that to be true at all for myself and I’m not sure many other first-timers would say otherwise. The vibe, from the moment I picked up my credentials on Friday morning, was light-hearted. At the same time, the entire operation throughout the weekend was first-class. Kudos to the NHL, the city of Raleigh and the Carolina Hurricanes for pulling everything off in fine fashion.

Kane Appears To Be Out For Weeks
by Paul on 12/07/10 at 10:48 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,
As it did following injuries to Brian Campbell, Marian Hossa and Dave Bolland, life will go on for the Blackhawks without Patrick Kane.
Kane suffered a significant injury during the Hawks’ 4-2 victory Sunday night over the Flames, and while it’s not known yet exactly how long the winger will be out after hurting his left leg, it’s more likely a matter of weeks instead of days.
“We’ve found a way to play without some of our top players,” team captain Jonathan Toews said. “Guys like Campbell and Hossa and I guess now we don’t have a choice, we’ll have to do it without Kane. It’s about everyone else stepping up.
“You’re going to have some ups and downs as the season goes along. Injuries are part of the game. It’s something you have to deal with so we’ll just try our best … and that’s pretty much all we can do.”

Kane Wants To Put An End To His Slow Start
by Paul on 10/26/10 at 10:15 PM ET
Comments (3)
from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,
Off to his slowest offensive start in three-plus seasons with the Blackhawks, Patrick Kane isn’t making any excuses.
“There really are none,” said Kane, who has two goals and five assists while playing nine of the Hawks’ first 10 games. “I’m here to produce; I’m not here for any other reason. So when you’re not doing that you’re not doing your job.”...
“It seems like we have two guys going right now, Hossa and Sharp,” said Kane, who has 237 points off 78 goals and 159 assists in 253 career games. “You want to take it upon yourself to start helping those guys. Enough is enough.”

All Patrick Kane

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Q: Nobody’s won back-to-back Stanley Cups since the Red Wings did it back in 1997 and ’98. You’re going to have to deal with the effects of all the players that you lost [due to salary cap pressure], plus the effects of that short summer. Do you think maybe some of the changes actually help you because it puts a lot of hungry hockey players into your lineup, all of whom want to win their first championships?
A: That’s what we’re kind of noticing now. You talk to somebody like [new No. 1 goalie] Marty Turco. We’re all excited about winning the Stanley Cup. He’s excited about winning one this upcoming year. He’s so enthusiastic about the season. He wants to get back on top of his game, he wants to be a big part of the team. … Sometimes, you talk to a guy like that and it just gives you motivation to get back on the ice and want to do it for him because you were in the same position last year.

The Bigger, Stronger Patrick Kane
by Paul on 09/19/10 at 09:21 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Tim Sassone of the Chicago Daily-Herald,
This summer Kane went to work on bettering his release of the puck with the hopes of producing even bigger offensive numbers in his fourth year with the Blackhawks.
“I actually hired a guy I worked with when I was 11 or 12 years old who is really good with skills,” Kane said. “He actually helped me a lot, not only with my shot, but with the release of your shot, the way to get it off even quicker.
“We worked on skating and things like that. You’re obviously trying to get stronger and get faster. I think I made a big improvement on that last year.”
Kane’s not going to predict a 100-point season, but it’s obviously on his radar. The Hawks haven’t had a 100-point scorer since Jeremy Roenick in 1993-94.
“I’m not going to be the one to say it, but I think that’s kind of my job for the team - to produce points, create plays and create offense,” Kane said. “That’s definitely a number you want to hit, but you want to improve your all-around game - be on the ice in all situations and hopefully prove myself more.”

Being Patrick Kane
by Paul on 08/15/10 at 07:17 AM ET

from Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times,
It’s not hard to reach the conclusion that Kane lives in two completely different worlds. In the one fans are most familiar with, he’s the leading scorer for the Stanley Cup champions and an icon in a sports-crazed Chicago, glitz and glamor included.
The other is one in which he has a father who still nudges him to be better at everything he does, a mother who prepares him steak when he asks, three younger sisters to compete against in backyard games and a group of friends—or goofballs—not afraid to give him a hard time.
But what those closest to Kane want you to know about him is that ‘‘Chicago Pat’’ hasn’t influenced ‘‘Buffalo Pat’’ and that NHL superstar Pat is the same as I-drive-around-with-my-sisters-and-dance Pat. To them, Kane hasn’t changed at all.
But that leaves the question: Who, then, is Patrick Kane?

What Do You Expect On Friday The 13th?
by Paul on 08/13/10 at 05:38 PM ET

via Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
It was nearly a devastating doozy, but breathe easy Chicago fans and Buffalonians because the first malfunction of Patrick Kane’s day with the Cup has been rectified.
Kane and the Cup were stuck about three stories up in the bucket of a fire engine for about 20 minutes because the motor that controls the ladder had stopped working. After calling in the technicians, the firemen finally got their ladder working and Kane was returned successfully down to earth.
As he stepped off the ladder he was visibly shaking.
“It was a little scary, but anything with this (the Cup) is unexpected,” a clearly relieved Kane said after making his way down. “I’m just happy to be out.”

Will Kane Raise His Game?
by Paul on 06/05/10 at 06:45 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
He’s small but not a timid player, yet he’s playing like it, which may be more of an indication of uncertainty and confusion. He’s controlled the puck but seems content to circle and circle, rather than take the puck to areas where he might be more likely to score, and the Flyers are content to let him circle. He did score a pretty breakaway goal in Game 3, but that’s been it.
Four rounds of physical pounding may have taken their toll on the Buffalo native, but that just makes him the same as everyone else.
The same as everyone else, of course, is what Kane can’t be. He’s got to be special and different, and it’s possible he may not be ready to be that player in a Cup final just yet….
This is a series dominated by Canadian-born players, which leaves Kane almost alone in the American spotlight. But he’s got to want to be there. So far, it doesn’t look like a comfy fit.

Others Hope To Follow Kane’s Path
by Paul on 06/04/10 at 02:35 PM ET

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
This was Patrick Kane’s life exactly three years ago: Top prospect for the 2007 entry draft, attending a game in the Stanley Cup final, going on television with Don Cherry, and otherwise absorbing what life at the top looks like as an NHL player.
The difference, on Friday, was that Kane was on the other side of the fence, suiting up for the Chicago Blackhawks, only two victories away from celebrating a championship of his own, as the NHL paraded the leading contenders for the 2010 entry draft through the dressing rooms of the two Cup contenders.
Nowadays, the transition from top prospect to significant contributor can happen quickly. Kane is living proof that a player with high-end skill doesn’t need a lot of time in the development stream, and that a team that lands a player of his level can turn things around quickly.

No Fear In Kane’s Game
by Paul on 05/20/10 at 08:07 PM ET

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
So there was Patrick Kane, the charismatic, young Chicago Blackhawks star, fielding questions from a gathering of reporters when an innocuous softball landed at his feet.
Kane was asked: Do his butterflies increase or decrease, knowing the Blackhawks are only two victories away from a Stanley Cup appearance, entering Friday’s third game of the Western Conference final against the San Jose Sharks?
“To be honest with you, I haven’t really had butterflies as far as playing the game,” Kane answered so matter-of-factly and so without pretence that you knew it to be true.
In that sentence there is a great deal of insight into what makes tick a player small (5 foot 10, 178 pounds) even by the new NHL standards, but who plays the game without fear of failure.

Patrick Kane’s Introduction To The World
by Paul on 02/11/10 at 02:26 PM ET
Comments (7)
from Mike Kiley of Blackhawks Confidential,
Are you ready, Chicago? Are you ready, world? Kane appeals to all ages, gossipy old nags that like sniffing the scandal sheets and bright-eyed girls and boys who can relate to a fella that’s part Huckleberry Finn, part Eminem, part Joe Namath, part Denis Savard, and pretty much three-quarters Bobby Hull, except for the hair. All live wire.
Kid Galahad could be the belle of this ball, because he so enjoys scrambling those letters to read KID HAD-A-GAL or simply KID GALA, a rollicking roustabout coming straight to your stage and the wide, wide world of sports (I know, I’m mixing networks) from Al Capone’s rootin’-tootin’ hometown, which is still how much of the world identifies Chicago….
Team USA’s Olympic opener is a 12 p. m. puck drop in Vancouver, so Kane still has time to gather the girl scout troop for a Monday night reprise in the party limo, get John Madden and Kris Versteeg on the laptop webcam, try reverse-role playing and have the gals be the ones that take off their shirts this time round for the paparazzi shoot, roast them a few marshmallows, drown them with Jagermeister shooters for the international spirit, park at Lover’s Leap in Stanley Park for belated Valentine canoodling under the moonlight and hit the hay without the need of a police escort to help him say his evening prayers.

Is Kane Looking For A Fight?
by Paul on 01/18/10 at 08:58 PM ET

from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,
Patrick Kane had a ringside seat on the Blackhawks’ bench as teammate Kris Versteeg threw haymaker after haymaker during a fight against Patrick Eaves in Sunday’s game against the Red Wings.
Earlier this month, Kane was a spectator as Jonathan Toews exchanged punches with the Blues’ David Backes at center ice. For Versteeg and Toews — neither of whom are exactly heavyweights — they were each the second fights of their NHL careers.
So when does Kane, roughly in their same weight class, drop the gloves for the first time?
“I’m wondering that too,” said Kane, in his third season.

Kane With A Good Gesture
by Paul on 01/07/10 at 08:28 AM ET
Comments (7)
from David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune,
From the moment Kane saw the kid wearing his jersey at Fenway Park as part of the Jan. 1 ceremony unveiling the U.S. Olympic hockey team, he got an idea. Kane was traveling to St. Louis with the Hawks but felt so moved by the gesture that he immediately contacted front-office personnel to begin tracking down the boy’s name.
A few phone calls later, and Kane arranged through the family to sign the jersey Thursday so the kid would have more than a memory to mark the occasion of making Kane’s Olympic moment official.
“The whole thing was very cool,” Kane said.
In a sports town where life has been decidedly uncool lately, how nice to see a local hero embrace his status and exceed expectations as a person and player. On the current landscape of Chicago superstars as 2010 begins, there is Kane and there is everybody else.

A Test For Kane
by Paul on 10/06/09 at 12:00 PM ET

from Steve Rosenbloom of RosenBlog at the Chicago Tribune,
Patrick Kane has been getting time on the penalty-killing unit. Yes, the most offensively magical Blackhawk is hopping over the boards on the most thankless unit.
What gives?
Here’s what gives: This is Kane’s career at a crossroads.
I don’t care if it’s early in the professional life for the kid who’s still not old enough to drink (even if he’s old enough to allegedly beat up a senior cabbie). And I don’t care if Hawks coach Joel Quenneville is underplaying the move by saying it’s just a “way of getting him a little bit more ice time in the course of games.’’ This is a career-defining opportunity that Kane needs to master. Adult skate, kid.
At least, it has been that way with players Kane grew up watching, if not idolizing: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, Mike Modano and Joe Sakic. The greatest offensive forces took shifts on the most defensive unit.

Kane Talk

Patrick Kane held an online Q & A with the fans today at ESPN,
Patrick, most of the nation has high hopes for this Blackhawk team considering you guys exceed all expectations last season. How has this team responded in the locker room, and can you guys channel that into a long run at the Stanley Cup?Go Hawks and have a great season!
Patrick Kane: I think it’s the same group. The same atmosphere. I think last year was one of those years that you didn’t want to end. Unfortunately it did end. This year, we’re a year older and we added a guy like Hossa who will help us out a lot. Really, it will propel us to the next level. WE want to bring home the cup. It hasn’t happened in a while. We don’t want to leave this year to chance.

Stanley Cup Or Bust Year For Chicago
by Paul on 09/16/09 at 06:43 AM ET

from Brian Compton of NHL.com,
Just three years after drafting Jonathan Toews with the third pick and less than 48 months following the No. 1 selection of Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks found themselves in the Western Conference Finals. As they enter the 2009-10 season, the word “rebuild’ isn’t even a part of the Hawks’ vocabulary. These days, Kane believes only two words should be used.
“It’s probably (Stanley) Cup or bust this year, and that’s what we want,” Kane told NHL.com. “I think you’ve got to play for those expectations. The better you get, the more the expectations are going to grow. Expectations are probably to the ceiling, but that’s the way it should be. That’s the way we want it.”

Enough Patrick

from Mike Kiley of Blackhawks Confidential at ChicagoNow,
Patrick Kane just made his first preseason slip-up. It’s time for the Blackhawks bosses who want him to grow up and take responsibility for his actions to tell him for his own good to shut up and stop playing the victim.
One more attempt by Kane to feel sorry for himself will be one too many.
“Actually, this is probably the hardest summer that I’ve ever worked out in my life and people are going to say because of one night that I didn’t work out this summer,” Kane told ESPN.com.
Whaa, whaa, whaa, Charlie Brown. No word yet on whether Kane had opened his ever-useful tear ducts for more sympathy when he said those words.

from Natasha Korecki of the Chicago Sun-Times,
An Erie County grand jury has passed on felony charges against Blackhawks star winger Patrick Kane but indicted him and his cousin this afternoon on misdemeanor harassment and theft charges.
Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita said in a statement: “Patrick Kane will not be prosecuted more leniently or more harshly because he is employed as a hockey player.” The charges come following testimony from “all known witnesses, including a witness suggested by defense counsel,” according to the statement.

Plea Deal Ahead For Kane?
by Paul on 08/18/09 at 10:40 AM ET

from Gene Warner of the Buffalo News,
Hockey star Patrick Kane and his cousin are expected to avoid criminal charges in a plea deal being hammered out, after both men are expected to be indicted this week on misdemeanor criminal charges, law enforcement sources said Monday.
Those sources also said the most likely plea deal would involve the Kanes either pleading guilty to a violation — maybe harassment or disorderly conduct — or being granted an adjournment that could have the charges later dropped.
Neither of those scenarios likely would involve any jail time for the two cousins.

Kane Talks A Bit More On The Cab Incident
by Paul on 08/17/09 at 01:53 PM ET

from Chris Kruc of Icing at the Chicago Tribune,
A subdued Patrick Kane met with the media following the opening practice of the 2009 U.S. Men’s Olympic orientation camp Monday. After reading a prepared statement earlier in the day, the Blackhawks winger later discussed his Aug. 9 arrest following an altercation with a Buffalo cabdriver.
“I haven’t really told anyone my side of the story to be honest with you,” Kane said. “The only one who really knows is my lawyer and my family. That’s about as far as it goes. [I want to] move on and try to get over this. It’s been very supportive from a lot of people. It’s times like these maybe you can live and learn and find out who your true friends are at an early age.”
Kane was one of 34 NHL players at the camp at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge, which is the first step toward determining the 23-man roster for the 2010 Winter Olympics team in Vancouver.

“I cannot discuss the details,” Kane said, but added, “I sincerely apologize.”
Kane’s statement lasted less than a minute and added no new details of what transpired in Buffalo, given the ongoing legal proceedings.

Bloggers Send The Wrong Message With Kane Stories

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,
The question of whether independent bloggers should have equal status with mainstream media is a hot topic in the industry. But the alleged Patrick Kane robbery and battery of a cabby was not exactly a shining moment for the integrity of bloggers. The release of the police charges Monday morning brought an immediate torrent of abuse in the blogosphere for Kane, who was accused of beating a hapless Buffalo cabby for a 20-cent tip. Before Kane could explain his side, sites were saying “How could Kane be this stupid?...

The Kane Incident May End Up Like This
by Paul on 08/11/09 at 01:21 PM ET
Comments (10)
from Jim Kelley of Sportsnet,
The cab driver, who has his own share of problems that include a drunken driving conviction and revelations that he was driving Kane and a cousin with a suspended New York State drivers license, will likely support his lawyer’s claim that the entire incident was “blown out of proportion.” IN addition, the cab driver may concede that he may have actually contributed to the situation by not having the proper change necessary to accommodate the fare the Kane cousin offered and that he might have accelerated the incident by locking the doors of his cab with the two young men inside.
There might even be “photo op” showing the 20-year-old hockey player and the 62-year-old cab driver shaking hands and making a statement designed to show the youth of Buffalo that reasonable people can settle disagreements like men truly should, without the need to resort to violence or harsh words.
added 2:40pm, from John Grigg of The Hockey News,
Kane deserves a break, as does Radecki. Kane deserves his day in court, and not the court of public opinion. Radecki deserves a modicum of privacy concerning his past – although he did open himself to criticism by doing that TV interview and his lawyer’s assertion that something can be ‘worked out’ doesn’t help.
But please, people, remember that Kane and Radecki are people, too. Just like you and me. And I’m sure we’d all hope everyone wouldn’t jump to conclusions at the first reports of something being amiss in our lives. I know I would.

Buffalo Cab Driver With A Not So Clean Past
by Paul on 08/11/09 at 07:52 AM ET

from Aaron Besecker of the Buffalo News,
The city cab driver who has accused National Hockey League star Patrick Kane and his cousin of robbing and attacking him Sunday morning has two drunken driving convictions and had no valid driver’s license at the time of the incident, The Buffalo News has learned.
Jan Radecki, 62, of Lombard Street, has had a cab license in the City of Buffalo since May 1996 and became licensed with the city for a Chrysler minivan in 2003. Radecki’s driver’s license, however, was revoked in December 1998 after he refused to submit to a chemical test, according to state Department of Motor Vehicle records. He was issued a conditional license by the agency after the incident.

If The Kane Case Isn’t Cleared, What Will Chicago Do?
by Paul on 08/10/09 at 07:29 PM ET

Craig Custance of the Sporting News has a statement from Patrick Kane’s agent, Pat Brisson, basically stating Kane will be cleared of all charges.
But what if he isn’t?
from Craig Custance of the The Sporting News,
John McDonough wasn’t talking specifically about Blackhawks players when he said it. Chicago was in the middle of its surprising playoff run when McDonough met with a group of reporters at the United Center.
He was gracious with his time. Even ordered some pizza for a small group of writers working a long shift. And during the long conversation, he shared his philosophy as team president of the Blackhawks.
There’s a Blackhawks Way, he said, and if one of his employees doesn’t get it, they’re out.
“I’m not really patient and have a tendency to call people on things because, to me, once is a trend,” McDonough said at the time.
Now, we’ll see if that trend includes star forwards.

As for the Hawks, maybe this is an opportunity to tone down some of the circus-is-coming publicity with which they have scorched the Chicago area. At times, it has been as over the top as a bearded lady. It only seems as if Kane and Jonathan Toews, the Hawks’ other young star, have made more public appearances than they have played hockey games.
The Hawks can’t try to sell themselves as one thing and then act another way in real life. How about this revolutionary thought: Just focus on winning.
