Two Devils Talk, One About Jagr
by Paul on 03/01/10 at 06:53 PM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Devils left wing Ilya Kovalchuk said he had not seen the comments from Kontinental Hockey League president Alexander Medvedev that SKA St. Petersburg will top any offer he will receive from an NHL team this summer.
“They’re just rumors,” Kovalchuk told me. “I’m trying to not think about it. This is my time in New Jersey and I have to focus on that because there’s it’s too much going on it my life in the last couple of weeks: the Olympics, the trade, my wife is pregnant. But now everything is settled down and I’m really focused on Jersey. We’ve got a great team and a great opportunity.”…
After playing with Jaromir Jagr on the Czech Republic’s Olympic team, Devils forward Patrik Elias believes Jagr wants to play in the NHL again.
“I think he’d love to,” Elias said. “He certainly showed and proved that he still has it and he can be an effective player, no question about it.”
Elias was understandably not happy with the Czech team losing, 2-0, to Finland in the quarterfinals.

via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
The Devils placed forward Patrik Elias on injured reserve today retroactive to after Saturday’s game against Colorado.
Players must remain on injured reserve for at least seven days before playing again, so that means Elias will be out at least until the Devils’ game in Otttawa on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Elias is sidelined with a suspected concussion after he was knocked out on a hit by Colorado’s Ryan Wilson 38 seconds into the second period of Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Avalanche.

via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Devils forward Patrik Elias left the ice on a stretcher after he took a shoulder to the chin from Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan Wilson 38 seconds into the second period of today’s game at Pepsi Center.
Through a team spokesman, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said Elias is “OK” and “has all of his faculties.” Elias is back in the locker room and, apparently, was not taken to the hospital. Lamoriello said Elias will be re-evaluated tomorrow and will travel back to New Jersey with the team after the game.
The Devils lost the game, 3-1.

Elias Plans To Play A Simple Game

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,
When Elias returned from Hepatitis A, which he contracted during the lockout, on Jan. 3, 2006, the Devils were a game under .500 and in serious danger of missing the playoffs. They went 30-9-4 after his return and he had 45 points in his 38 games.
“That was ridiculous,” Elias said. “Don’t expect that from me, even though I’d like to play that way. It’s different things in your body. They’re cutting into you and doing things to you, repairing. It’s different for an athlete.
“It’s two separate issues, and the body reacts totally differently.”

Deciding When Elias Can Play
by Paul on 11/03/09 at 01:05 PM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Asked if he could play Wednesday, Elias said. “I don’t know. They just asked me how I feel. That’s all. So, I don’t know.”
Initially Lemaire said, “I don’t know” when asked about Elias’ status for Wednesday’s game. He pulled Elias aside and spoke to him briefly after they left the ice following today’s practice.
“We want to make sure he’s 100 percent, close to 100 percent and he’s the one that will determine that,” Lemaire said. “Myself, the way he’s playing right now, he can play. If it’s only me, he’s going to play. He’s the one that makes the decision.”
When informed that Lemaire said the decision would be up to him, Elias said, “Really? That’s funny.”
Elias sounded concerned about having a setback by coming back too soon.

Elias Practices, May Play On The Weekend
by Paul on 11/02/09 at 12:55 PM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Elias said “nobody has said a word” to him about when he might play.
“If you ask me, I haven’t practiced, I haven’t played a game in five months,” he said. “I don’t think two practices will do. I think there’s more danger to it than the positive side. Today was practice and the guys knew it was my first time, so they backed off me a little bit and gave me time. Nobody’s going to do that in a game. You don’t want to get caught out there with your head down looking for the pucks all the time and give the other team the opportunity to get you.”
Elias sounded optimistic, however, about playing in one of the games this weekeend—Friday against the Islanders at home and Saturday in Ottawa.
“There’s back-to-back games, so one game would be great to jump in and just to get my feet wet a little bit,” he said. “Then, we have three more practices after that. That would be a perfect scenario, but, like I said, nobody has said a word. We haven’t talked about it. For me, it was good to get out there and not really feel much with the leg.”

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said that Patrik Elias’ visit with Dr. William Meyers today in Philadelphia went well and he’s continuing to progess as expected after Elias’ Sept. 15 arthroscopic groin surgery.
“Everything is fine,” Lamoriello said. “Everything is on target. It’s is normal progress as it has been.”

Elias Out 3-6 Weeks After Surgery
by Paul on 09/16/09 at 11:28 AM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Devils forward Patrik Elias underwent surgery Tuesday in Philadelphia to clean up some scar tissue in his groin and will be out for three to six weeks, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said this morning (10:15 a.m).
That mean Elias will miss the team’s regular season opener against Philadelphia on Oct. 3.
Dr.William Meyers, the a sports hernia specialist who performed the groin surgery on Elias four years ago, also performed this procedure, which was done arthroscopically.
“His groin had stll been bothering him, but his hip was feeling fine, so we decided to send him to see the doctor who originally did his groin surgery four years ago, Dr. Myers in Philadelphia,” Lamoriello said. “After consultation with our doctors and Dr. Myers, what he did was he decided to look and see what was going on there after the MRI. It happens that he had a lot of scar tissue that had been built up in that area and he just broke up the scar tissue.

Elias Still Troubled By Groin Issues
by Paul on 09/12/09 at 10:02 AM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Devils forward Patrik Elias said this morning that he doesn’t know if he’ll be ready for the team’s regular season opener on Oct. 3 against Philadelphia because he is still experiencing discomfort in his groin from surgery three months ago.
“I don’t know,” Elias said when asked if he would be ready for the season opener. “I’ve been skating for over three weeks, but it’s not to the extent or the intensity where I want it to be at this point. But, I had issues, I got it fixed and I’m still not 100 percent, so we’re trying to see why I’m not 100 percent. I think that at this point after three months it should be getter better, but it wasn’t just the hip. I also had the adductor problem back then. So it was two separate issues and it takes awhile everything, especially after you fix the hip and the muscle related that takes a little while.”
Elias, who had surgery on June 12 in Vail, Colorado to repair a tear in his labrum and scrape off an impingment in his hip, said he will visit a hip/groin specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday to get another opinion before moving forward.
Elias took his training camp physical this morning, but was excused from the treadmill test because of his groin. He said his hip feels fine, but he still has discomfort in his adductor muscle in his groin.

Elias Will Get A Shot At Center
by Paul on 09/08/09 at 02:33 PM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Lemaire said he thinks it is difficult for a wing to shift to center.
“If they are capable of doing it , I have no problem (with it),” he said. “"But you don’t see too many of those. I didn’t see in my career too many guys that were wingers and turned out to be a good center. It’s so different. You can ask any center. It’s a totally different game,”
That said, Lemaire believes that Patrik Elias, who played center two years ago, is capable of making the move.from left wing to the middle.
“Elias is a guy that could play center,” he said. “He’s good enough.”
In fact, Lemaire said, he “probably” will look at Elias at center during training camp.,

Would Elias Leave New Jersey
by Paul on 11/16/08 at 07:57 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
So now the Devils, who also must contend with a woefully underachieving Gionta (a franchise record 48-goal 2005-06, followed by 25-, 22- and now two-goal outputs) have Elias, who had his captaincy stripped last season by coach Brent Sutter, was denigrated at times last year by Sutter, was moved from the wing into the middle and back, with four more years on this killer deal and with no way out.
No way out, that is, unless Elias agrees to go, and without any of the coercive and degrading tactics used by the amateur- hour bunch in Tampa that ultimately convinced Dan Boyle to pack up and leave for San Jose.

Elias Plans To Be The Go-To-Guy
by Paul on 10/07/08 at 09:44 PM ET

from Rick Chere of the Star-Ledger,
“I know what kind of player I am,” Elias said. “I proved it to myself in the second half of (last) season and in the playoffs. I like to be in situations when the game is on the line.
“I like to think I can still be the go-to guy. I believe I have some great years ahead of me.”
Sutter said he senses a difference in Elias.
“I just think it’s different for Patty this year,” the coach explained. “It’s more settling to him. What transpired last year is done and over.”

They Meet Again

from Game On,
Alive and well. Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez.
By a remarkable scheduling coincidence, they meet on Wednesday night at The Rock for the Rangers’ first trip to Newark’s fabulous Prudential Center.
In a sense, it’s a meeting of The Comeback Kids: both player-wise and team-wise.

Have We Seen The Last Of the “Old” Elias?
by Paul on 11/12/07 at 12:44 PM ET

from Stan Fischler at Game On,
Can Elias recover the skills that once elevated him to the upper echelon of forwards? One would like to think so; for his and the Devils’ sake. However, if he doesn’t emerge from his slough of scoring despond, Sutter’s fail-safe hope has to be Langenbrunner, champing at the bit to return.
Now wouldn’t it be something if Elias and Langenbrunner simultaneously began flashing the red light, along with Gionta, Zubrus, et. al.
Or is that as dreamy as a white Christmas?

Elias Trying To Get His Game In Gear

from the Record,
Patrik Elias still had something he wanted to say to Sutter, though. So, as the rest of the team headed for the locker room, they leaned against the boards in front of one of the benches and talked for more than 10 minutes.
“I initiated the talk,” Elias said. “It was just to make sure we’re on the same page, to know what he’s thinking in certain situations and what’s behind some of the things he did. I just want to make sure that I play the best that I can play for this team. I want to help this team and I’m well aware of what I can bring.
“I just want to play better.”

Sutter Looking For Consistent Elias
by Paul on 10/27/07 at 09:03 AM ET

from the NY Post,
Nine road games into his NHL coaching career, Sutter yesterday ripped the performance of the team’s leading scorer for six of the past seven seasons.
“At some point, Patty’s got to figure it out, what he wants to do, what level of player does he want to be?” Sutter said before tonight’s first home game against the Ottawa Senators. “I thought he was working himself out of it in the two games there where he played very well, and now his play has dropped off some. It’s not because he doesn’t care. He does care. He has to find a way to want to compete at his highest level every shift of every game....”

New head coach Brent Sutter announced this morning that Patrik Elias might not be the captain again this season, Sutter did not rule out picking Elias to wear the C again, but said he would go through “a process” with his assistant coaches and general manager Lou Lamoriello to select the captain and the alternates.
