Paul Mara Signs With Montreal

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of defenseman Paul Mara to a one-year contract for the 2009-10 season. As per Club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Paul Mara will bring size and experience to our group of defensemen. He can contribute to all facets of the game”, said Bob Gainey.

Mara Injury A Blow To The Rangers Defense

So it turns out yesterday’s 5-2 Garden loss to the Flyers was not the most damaging of the day for the Rangers.

Because the Blueshirts also lost Paul Mara, who for the bulk of the season has been the team’s best and most inspirational defenseman, when his right shoulder popped out as he tried to throw a punch while fighting with Aaron Asham, 6:14 into the third period.

Mara Out Two Weeks

Paul Mara is undergoing surgery for broken facial bones today and is expected to be sidelined for two weeks.

Mara was hammered in a helmet-to-helmet hit by the Sabres’ Pat Kaleta on Saturday in the first period and didn’t return.
