Datsyuk Day To Day

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Pavel Datsyuk (upper-body injury) did not practice and will not play tonight against the Kings. He is listed as day-to-day.

“He’ll be missed, but other players will get a chance to play more, get a chance on the power play,’’ Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. “So someone else has to step up.’’

Boogaard Gets Advice From Datsyuk

from Bruce Brothers of the Pioneer Press,

So, while rehabbing after shoulder surgery this summer with Jeremy Clark, whose organization in Eagan provides instruction in core strength training, judo and other martial arts, Boogaard seized the chance to go to Russia and work with Detroit Red Wings all-star forward Pavel Datsyuk.

He accompanied Clark, the strength and conditioning coach for Datsyuk’s hockey camps in Yekaterinburg, formerly known as Sverdlovsk, and spent 18 days soaking up tips from one of the NHL’s best two-way players.

“The stuff he can do is just unbelievable,” Boogaard said, noting that Datsyuk also worked with kids ages 10-12 who were able to produce what he labeled “mind-boggling” moves on the ice.

Datsyuk freely dispensed advice to Boogaard, as well, and the native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, said the whole experience was “an eye-opener.”

Will it make him a better offensive hockey player?

Boogaard said in the understatement of the century, that he and Datsyuk “are different players.” Nevertheless, he added, “I feel really relaxed. I seem a little more confident.”

“The idea to organize such camp was born several years ago.  I remember those times when I was small and wanted real ice hockey stars to teach me some skills. We gave the information about the camp, so those children who wanted to take part came here. Of course, the parents of these kids had to pay some part of the expenses, but we paid the bulk ourselves.”

Datsyuk & Malkin Talk

from Dmitry Chesnokov at Puck Daddy,

Pavel Datsyuk(notes) of the Wings and Evgeni Malkin(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins spoke after the Game 6 victory for the home team about a number of subjects, including what to look for in Game 7, being so close to winning the Stanley Cup and Malkin speaking about both Marian Hossa(notes) and his plans for octopi in Detroit.

First up is Datsyuk:

Q. Did you have a gut feeling before the final that this would be a seventh game series?

DATSYUK: To be honest with you, I didn’t think about it at all. I just want to win. It is clear that the Pittsburgh Penguins are an excellent team. So, I don’t think anyone thought it would be easy.

After your comeback from the foot injury it seems you have some special attention from some Penguins’ players: Like Max Talbot(notes) slashing you on your injured foot; and tonight Matt Cooke(notes) almost having a knee on knee collision with you.

To be honest with you, it is great! It just means they don’t like me for something. On a different hand, this is the playoffs and the game is very aggressive, especially in the finals. But it is all within the rules....

Can you almost feel the Stanley Cup in your hands?

MALKIN:  No. But it is a lot closer this year. We have a more even team. And we are playing awesome as a team. And now we have a Game 7. I think Detroit will also be nervous. We have our strengths. We have to play our hockey and not adjust to Detroit’s style.

13 & 40 Noticed

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

The plays these guys make in tight are impressive, as are the plays they make defensively to turn it into offence. These guys were unbelievable to watch all night - they had five of the 12 shots that were blocked by the Red Wings, they’re terrific when they don’t have the puck, they’re magical to watch when they do, and it’s going to be terrific to see a Game 7 showdown between the best of the Penguins and the best of the Red Wings.

Really, offensively on the night, you noticed Datsyuk and Zetterberg a lot more than you did Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin but as I said, the supporting cast ruled the day, and Pittsburgh’s was a little better.

Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Draper & Datsyuk In Pittsburgh

Q.  Can I ask you about home ice advantage in this series? The home team has obviously won all the games. Are match?ups that critical in this series, how big a part of the results that we’ve seen is that?

NICKLAS LIDSTROM: I don’t think match-ups has been the big issue. I think the team that has had home ice advantage has played really well at home. They’ve gained a lot of momentum from the crowd or what not. So I think just that in itself has helped the home team playing on their home ice.

I think match-ups in Games 3 and 4 wasn’t that big of an issue for us. Only a couple of times we didn’t have the match-up that we wanted when we started the shift. But otherwise we did a good job coming on and off the ice.

The Real MVP

from Jamie Fitzpatrick of Jamie’s Blog at About.com,

Pavel Datsyuk can’t win the Conn Smythe Trophy as Stanley Cup MVP. His foot injury cost him too many games, and he wasn’t scoring much before he got hurt.

But in his return on Saturday night, Detroit’s finest looked like the best player in the NHL, which he might be....

He also reminded us that MVPs dominate the game at both ends of the ice.

After watching Datsyuk and company neutralize the Penguins, how could anyone consider Malkin a Conn Smythe candidate?

Luckily Datsyuk Listened To His Mom

from Larry Wigge of NHL.com,

Datsyuk always was a skinny kid. That’s part of the reason why he wasn’t picked at all in his draft year and it wasn’t until the second year that the Wings finally took a chance on his brilliant skills, reasoning he could get stronger and might someday be ready to play in the NHL.

“It’s funny,” he told me earlier this season. “My first sport wasn’t soccer or hockey. It was chess.”

Valery, Pavel’s dad, drove a van for a company near their home in Sverdlovsk, Russia. He’s the one who introduced his son to chess. Pavel’s mom, Galina, worked as a cook for a military base. She’s the one who would take him to the skating rink.

Draper, Datsyuk & Cleary Today

Q.  Can you talk about the job that led to Pav coming back? That was the story, but he played pretty well especially in the early going there?

KRIS DRAPER: He was huge for us early on. They came out with a pretty great push, and Ozzie had to make some saves early. We had good battles that we had to win around the net. But after that, once Cleary scored, the team had to settle us down a little bit, and we were able to get into the way we want to play.

But our start, wasn’t nearly as good as it should have been from our team. And you give Pittsburgh credit, because they came in good.

Q. In what ways are Babcock and Bowman similar?

KRIS DRAPER: Similar? The passion to win. You know, Scotty at this time of the year was obviously the most successful coach of all time. And he always found ways to get the match-ups that he wanted.

I think Mike the last couple of years has done a great job bench coaching. But the one thing that you know from both coaches is that we always felt that we were prepared. That’s one thing that I know. Babs takes a lot of pride in just making sure that game?in and game?out that our hockey team is prepared and there aren’t any surprises.

You know, that’s exactly what he’s going to do over the next couple of days. He’s going to go over a ton of video to make sure that if there’s anything that we haven’t seen or that we need to do, that which make those changes and be prepared for Game 6.

Wait & See On Datsyuk

from Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star,

“I feel much better today. I’ll go for pre-game skate and then make a decision,” he said of his recovery from an injured right foot. “It’s every day better and better and better and today it’s much better. I have more smiles; more happy. It’s still a little sore but I’m happy.”

At the Red Wings’ morning skate, Datsyuk stayed on the ice for more than an hour after all the regulars had departed. He yukked it up with the healthy scratches, who always stay out for extra work, and worked on tight turns and dangling the puck.

Even though he said he felt better, to onlookers he looked like he was being more careful with his foot – which likely was fractured in Game 2 of the Western Conference final – and was skating a little more gingerly than he had at yesterday’s full practice.

Datsyuk, though, said he felt more confident about his status and he needed the extra work to really give it a test. Still, neither he, nor his coach, would commit to his being in the lineup.

Datsyuk & Osgood Today

Q. Do you think you’ll be healthy enough to play Game 4?

PAVEL DATSYUK: Yeah, I’m healthy now. But we’ll make tomorrow a game decision. A game decision. That’s it.

Q. What do you remember when you blocked that shot, you know? As an athlete, you go through a lot of different injuries. Just how painful it was then, and at any point did you think that maybe you wouldn’t even have a chance to be a game-time decision, that you might not be able to play at all?

PAVEL DATSYUK: What I remember, just I blocked shot, this is all, but I’m so happy I did my job, I blocked. And after I don’t want to take off my skates. You know, I finished game or not. Now every day it feels better and better, and I hope it’s gonna help me.

Wings Play-On Without Datsyuk

from Shawn P. Roarke of NHL.com,

The loss of Datsyuk is particularly difficult for the Wings to take and it is taking an emotional toll on Datsyuk, as well.

Not only is Datsyuk—up for three end-of-season League awards, including MVP—a catalyst in the offensive zone, but he is the team’s best defensive forward. Babcock said Friday that when he plays, Datsyuk might hold onto the puck for 18 minutes a game because of his elite skill level.

But reality must supersede emotions at this point and Babcock understands he can only go with the healthy bodies he has at his disposal. So Ville Leino and Justin Abdelkader will be plugged into the lineup to replace the two injured forwards.

“We’d like to have him, but we don’t have him,” Babcock said after Saturday’s morning skate. “The way we talk about it here, when you put on the uniform you’re expected to play well. He’s not going to have one on tonight, so he’ll be a little more nervous than the rest of us probably.”

Datsyuk Needed Now

from Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press,

He needs to step up in Game 7 now the way stars step up in big games, the way Ryan Getzlaf somehow shook off whatever was bugging him the last two games to lead the way Tuesday for Anaheim, the way Hiller shook off being yanked in Game 4 and soundly beaten in Game 5 to stop all but one shot in Game 6 when facing elimination.

Let’s state the obvious. Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are the Yzerman and Shanahan of this team now, and while no one will fault their effort, what counts in a Game 7, the only thing that counts, are results. Johan Franzen has done his part. Chris Osgood is doing his. The defensemen, for the most part, are doing theirs.

A Sit Down With Datsyuk

from Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press,

But I had this theory. Every man is deeper than his sound bite. If Datsyuk ever sat down, relaxed, away from the rink, and spoke in Russian, I figured, he’d be a whole different story.

This week, I finally got to witness that, with the help of a Russian-speaking business associate of Datsyuk’s named Dan Milstein. The three of us met at Bacco Ristorante in Southfield. Milstein translated. Sitting at a table, sipping a glass of water, Datsyuk shifted easily between his native tongue and his improved English.

And after a few hours, I knew more about this guy than I’d learned in eight years.

All Datsyuk

from Dmitry Chesnokov at Puck Daddy,

SovSport’s Dmitry Shumin and I decided to catch up with tireless Datsyuk, who might very well be the third finalist, together with Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, for the Hart trophy.

Datsyuk discusses playoff pressure, Chris Osgood’s place in history, Don Cherry criticism, whatever this “Art Ross Trophy” is and many other topics. And just like in our previous interviews with the unsung Russian superstar, Pavel gave us more of his sense of humor....

They say that defense wins Cups. Are you worried about your last line of defense?  Fans say that the Red Wings do not have a reliable goaltender.

They also say that you will be unlucky if a black cat crosses the road in front of you. I agree that goaltending is important. Goaltender’s play affects the confidence of the entire team. We are working on it, working hard in defense.

On a different note, your goaltender Chris Osgood caught up with Dominic Hasek and has as many wins. He is now 10th in the NHL history. But there is a presumption that Osgood was lucky to play for the great Red Wings.

Awesome! But what’s the question?

Datsyuk- MVP Candidate?

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Hossa called Datsyuk the most complete player in the NHL. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom said he should be a Hart Trophy candidate as league MVP.

Datsyuk takes a nine-game scoring streak (five goals, 11 assists) into tonight’s game against Minnesota at Joe Louis Arena.

The surge has bumped him up to fourth in the league in scoring with 68 points, behind only Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, and last season’s MVP, Alex Ovechkin of Washington.

It’s Not As Clear As It Should Have Been

Leave it to Scotty Bowman to break down the forced-sitting of Lidstrom & Datsyuk.

Also, from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,

Fine them.

Make them go to their room.

Make them each write a 1,000-word essay on why they love the NHL All-Star Game.

But to make Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings miss tonight’s game against the Blue Jackets does more potential harm to the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild than it does to Detroit.

For the sake of propping up an all-star game that is rightly mocked for presenting silly hockey, the NHL is using a sledge hammer to kill a fly.

No Appeal Process, Lidstrom & Datsyuk Will Sit

Update from Monday’s practice: Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and center Pavel Datsyuk both said they were disappointed in the NHL’s decision to force them to sit out Tuesday’s game in Columbus for withdrawing from the All-Star game due to injuries and not showing up in Montreal for the off-ice activities.

The Wings said, contrary to reports, there is no appeal process. It’s cut and dry. They will not play tonorrow. Technically, it’s not a suspension, as they will be paid.

A Look At Pavel Datsyuk

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Those who remember Datsyuk as a rookie, when he was a lanky little thing with deft hands and the shiest smile, aren’t the least bit surprised he has become a luminous star.

“His first day of training camp he had the flu,” former captain Steve Yzerman said. “From the second day on, he wowed us.”

Yzerman played with Datsyuk from 2001-02 until he retired in the summer of 2006. Now a member of the front office, Yzerman has vivid memories of Datsyuk’s first year.

“His stickhandling stood out immediately,” Yzerman said. “He just shoots more now. He was really good back then; he just didn’t play a lot.”

It spoke volumes about Datsyuk that, even as a rookie, veteran Brett Hull wanted to play with him, because Hull wasn’t the type to tolerate linemates who didn’t get him the puck.

“Brett recognized a good player there, for sure,” Yzerman said. “Pavel was so good right off the bat. Had we needed him to, he could have played a lot more than he did. He was phenomenal.”

For a shootout, it’s take the puck and see where the goalie is (and) decide what to do.  You always have time to change. I have a couple moves, but depending on what the goalie does, I might have to do something different.”

“If you don’t score, no one will remember because they won’t show on TV,” Datsyuk said. “If you score, you have a chance to see yourself on TV, and that’s special to see how you played in that moment.”

A Steal

from Brad Holland of NHL.com,

Before and after Red Wing practices, the players are allowed to skate around and work on their own skills, and Babcock has noticed that one of his younger players, Valtteri Filppula, has been following Datsyuk around the ice during these sessions while the veteran skater runs mini-clinics in stick, puck, and hand-eye skills.

“He and Filppula work together every day, pulling pucks off the wall, knocking down pucks, stealing pucks off each other: they play keep-away like you can’t believe,” Babcock said.

Almost unquestionably the best in the world in stick- and puck-skills, and Datsyuk still works harder than anyone else in the League. His efforts have produced amazing results, to the tune of a 225% increase in his takeaway totals in only three seasons.

Which begs the question: just how good is this guy going to get?

Playoff Performers

From Paul Kukla at NHL.com,

At one time, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg were known as regular-season performers, meaning they could play out the season but come playoff time, well, they were a different story.

Datsyuk’s postseason stats line once read like this: 42 games, 3 goals, 12 assists and minus-1. Zetterberg’s were similar: 16 games, 3 goals, 2 assists and minus-4. To be fair with Datsyuk, many of those early games saw him on the fourth line and on the second power play unit, so his ice time was very low as compared to the amount of ice he sees now.

Both Datsyuk and Zetterberg were labeled as players who could not get it done during the playoffs. Well, that label is now gone, forever.

Datsyuk & Zetterberg A Unique Pair

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

With attention usually directed to the Detroit Red Wings’ reputation as the NHL’s top puck possession team, it’s overlooked that the true uniqueness of this team is that its best scorers are also its best checkers.

The team’s two most dangerous offensive players, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, are among the three finalists for the Selke Trophy, the award given annually to the NHL’s top defensive forward.

That’s like comparing a Porsche to a Mercedes, but one NHL coach, who shall go nameless because his team has to play against the Detroit Red Wings players, says Zetterberg gets the edge. “He’s grittier, more competitive. Zetterberg is a lot like Forsberg was in his heyday,” said the coach. “Datsyuk has really taken on a leadership role there, too. That’s good to see.”

Pass First

from the Macomb Daily,

Pavel Datsyuk is an admitted pass-aholic. He would much rather pass than shoot, rather stick-handle than set up for a one-timer.

Lost in Zetterberg’s remarkable opening—he has a franchise record 15-game point streak from season’s start and leads the NHL in scoring—is that his linemate, Datsyuk, has helped turned the Swede into a sniper.

Entering Thursday night’s games, Datsyuk was third in the NHL with 14 assists in 15 games.

“I like passing,” said Datsyuk. “When somebody scores in an open net after my pass is the best. If somebody says, ‘Would you rather score or have somebody score off your pass?’ ... I’d say pass.”
