Wait & See On Datsyuk

“I feel much better today. I’ll go for pre-game skate and then make a decision,” he said of his recovery from an injured right foot. “It’s every day better and better and better and today it’s much better. I have more smiles; more happy. It’s still a little sore but I’m happy.”
At the Red Wings’ morning skate, Datsyuk stayed on the ice for more than an hour after all the regulars had departed. He yukked it up with the healthy scratches, who always stay out for extra work, and worked on tight turns and dangling the puck.
Even though he said he felt better, to onlookers he looked like he was being more careful with his foot – which likely was fractured in Game 2 of the Western Conference final – and was skating a little more gingerly than he had at yesterday’s full practice.
Datsyuk, though, said he felt more confident about his status and he needed the extra work to really give it a test. Still, neither he, nor his coach, would commit to his being in the lineup.

Q. Do you think you’ll be healthy enough to play Game 4?
PAVEL DATSYUK: Yeah, I’m healthy now. But we’ll make tomorrow a game decision. A game decision. That’s it.
Q. What do you remember when you blocked that shot, you know? As an athlete, you go through a lot of different injuries. Just how painful it was then, and at any point did you think that maybe you wouldn’t even have a chance to be a game-time decision, that you might not be able to play at all?
PAVEL DATSYUK: What I remember, just I blocked shot, this is all, but I’m so happy I did my job, I blocked. And after I don’t want to take off my skates. You know, I finished game or not. Now every day it feels better and better, and I hope it’s gonna help me.

added 2:31pm, Bruce continues to update… Holmstrom & Rafalski not on the ice, but he does expect Rafalski to play. No word on Homer but I do remember him sliding into the boards last night and favoring his left knee I believe.

Wings Play-On Without Datsyuk

The loss of Datsyuk is particularly difficult for the Wings to take and it is taking an emotional toll on Datsyuk, as well.
Not only is Datsyuk—up for three end-of-season League awards, including MVP—a catalyst in the offensive zone, but he is the team’s best defensive forward. Babcock said Friday that when he plays, Datsyuk might hold onto the puck for 18 minutes a game because of his elite skill level.
But reality must supersede emotions at this point and Babcock understands he can only go with the healthy bodies he has at his disposal. So Ville Leino and Justin Abdelkader will be plugged into the lineup to replace the two injured forwards.
“We’d like to have him, but we don’t have him,” Babcock said after Saturday’s morning skate. “The way we talk about it here, when you put on the uniform you’re expected to play well. He’s not going to have one on tonight, so he’ll be a little more nervous than the rest of us probably.”

Datsyuk Needed Now

He needs to step up in Game 7 now the way stars step up in big games, the way Ryan Getzlaf somehow shook off whatever was bugging him the last two games to lead the way Tuesday for Anaheim, the way Hiller shook off being yanked in Game 4 and soundly beaten in Game 5 to stop all but one shot in Game 6 when facing elimination.
Let’s state the obvious. Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are the Yzerman and Shanahan of this team now, and while no one will fault their effort, what counts in a Game 7, the only thing that counts, are results. Johan Franzen has done his part. Chris Osgood is doing his. The defensemen, for the most part, are doing theirs.

A Sit Down With Datsyuk

But I had this theory. Every man is deeper than his sound bite. If Datsyuk ever sat down, relaxed, away from the rink, and spoke in Russian, I figured, he’d be a whole different story.
This week, I finally got to witness that, with the help of a Russian-speaking business associate of Datsyuk’s named Dan Milstein. The three of us met at Bacco Ristorante in Southfield. Milstein translated. Sitting at a table, sipping a glass of water, Datsyuk shifted easily between his native tongue and his improved English.
And after a few hours, I knew more about this guy than I’d learned in eight years.

SovSport’s Dmitry Shumin and I decided to catch up with tireless Datsyuk, who might very well be the third finalist, together with Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, for the Hart trophy.
Datsyuk discusses playoff pressure, Chris Osgood’s place in history, Don Cherry criticism, whatever this “Art Ross Trophy” is and many other topics. And just like in our previous interviews with the unsung Russian superstar, Pavel gave us more of his sense of humor….
They say that defense wins Cups. Are you worried about your last line of defense? Fans say that the Red Wings do not have a reliable goaltender.
They also say that you will be unlucky if a black cat crosses the road in front of you. I agree that goaltending is important. Goaltender’s play affects the confidence of the entire team. We are working on it, working hard in defense.
On a different note, your goaltender Chris Osgood caught up with Dominic Hasek and has as many wins. He is now 10th in the NHL history. But there is a presumption that Osgood was lucky to play for the great Red Wings.
Awesome! But what’s the question?

Datsyuk- MVP Candidate?

Hossa called Datsyuk the most complete player in the NHL. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom said he should be a Hart Trophy candidate as league MVP.
Datsyuk takes a nine-game scoring streak (five goals, 11 assists) into tonight’s game against Minnesota at Joe Louis Arena.
The surge has bumped him up to fourth in the league in scoring with 68 points, behind only Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, and last season’s MVP, Alex Ovechkin of Washington.

It’s Not As Clear As It Should Have Been

Make them each write a 1,000-word essay on why they love the NHL All-Star Game.
But to make Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings miss tonight’s game against the Blue Jackets does more potential harm to the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild than it does to Detroit.
For the sake of propping up an all-star game that is rightly mocked for presenting silly hockey, the NHL is using a sledge hammer to kill a fly.

Update from Monday’s practice: Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and center Pavel Datsyuk both said they were disappointed in the NHL’s decision to force them to sit out Tuesday’s game in Columbus for withdrawing from the All-Star game due to injuries and not showing up in Montreal for the off-ice activities.
The Wings said, contrary to reports, there is no appeal process. It’s cut and dry. They will not play tonorrow. Technically, it’s not a suspension, as they will be paid.

NHLPA Wants More Information On The Lidstrom/Datsyuk Ruling

The National Hockey League Players Association has requested additional information from the NHL regarding the leagues intent to enforce a policy that will keep Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom out of Tuesday’s game against Columbus.
It’s possible the Players Association could file a grievance; however the impartial arbitrator wouldn’t be able to hear the case before Tuesday.

A Look At Pavel Datsyuk

Those who remember Datsyuk as a rookie, when he was a lanky little thing with deft hands and the shiest smile, aren’t the least bit surprised he has become a luminous star.
“His first day of training camp he had the flu,” former captain Steve Yzerman said. “From the second day on, he wowed us.”
Yzerman played with Datsyuk from 2001-02 until he retired in the summer of 2006. Now a member of the front office, Yzerman has vivid memories of Datsyuk’s first year.
“His stickhandling stood out immediately,” Yzerman said. “He just shoots more now. He was really good back then; he just didn’t play a lot.”
It spoke volumes about Datsyuk that, even as a rookie, veteran Brett Hull wanted to play with him, because Hull wasn’t the type to tolerate linemates who didn’t get him the puck.
“Brett recognized a good player there, for sure,” Yzerman said. “Pavel was so good right off the bat. Had we needed him to, he could have played a lot more than he did. He was phenomenal.”

For a shootout, it’s take the puck and see where the goalie is (and) decide what to do. You always have time to change. I have a couple moves, but depending on what the goalie does, I might have to do something different.”
“If you don’t score, no one will remember because they won’t show on TV,” Datsyuk said. “If you score, you have a chance to see yourself on TV, and that’s special to see how you played in that moment.”

Datsyuk just left the trainers’ room. He’s out of the lineup tonight and not saying exactly what the injury is. Datsyuk did say that he should be back in the lineup soon and that his injury isn’t long-term.

A Steal

Before and after Red Wing practices, the players are allowed to skate around and work on their own skills, and Babcock has noticed that one of his younger players, Valtteri Filppula, has been following Datsyuk around the ice during these sessions while the veteran skater runs mini-clinics in stick, puck, and hand-eye skills.
“He and Filppula work together every day, pulling pucks off the wall, knocking down pucks, stealing pucks off each other: they play keep-away like you can’t believe,” Babcock said.
Almost unquestionably the best in the world in stick- and puck-skills, and Datsyuk still works harder than anyone else in the League. His efforts have produced amazing results, to the tune of a 225% increase in his takeaway totals in only three seasons.
Which begs the question: just how good is this guy going to get?

Playoff Performers

At one time, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg were known as regular-season performers, meaning they could play out the season but come playoff time, well, they were a different story.
Datsyuk’s postseason stats line once read like this: 42 games, 3 goals, 12 assists and minus-1. Zetterberg’s were similar: 16 games, 3 goals, 2 assists and minus-4. To be fair with Datsyuk, many of those early games saw him on the fourth line and on the second power play unit, so his ice time was very low as compared to the amount of ice he sees now.
Both Datsyuk and Zetterberg were labeled as players who could not get it done during the playoffs. Well, that label is now gone, forever.

With attention usually directed to the Detroit Red Wings’ reputation as the NHL’s top puck possession team, it’s overlooked that the true uniqueness of this team is that its best scorers are also its best checkers.
The team’s two most dangerous offensive players, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, are among the three finalists for the Selke Trophy, the award given annually to the NHL’s top defensive forward.

Pavel Datsyuk’s sense of humor doesn’t always come out in articles and TV interviews. But he is one clever guy.
I asked him once about his on-ice vision, trying to find out how many of the other nine players he is aware of when he’s passing.
“When you have the puck, how many people do you see?”
Without smiling, Datsyuk answered, “18,000”
He was joking ... wasn’t he?

Who’s better? Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg? That’s like comparing a Porsche to a Mercedes, but one NHL coach, who shall go nameless because his team has to play against the Detroit Red Wings players, says Zetterberg gets the edge. “He’s grittier, more competitive. Zetterberg is a lot like Forsberg was in his heyday,” said the coach. “Datsyuk has really taken on a leadership role there, too. That’s good to see.”

Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk has been a linemate with Ilya Kovalchuk—who will be in town with Atlanta Tuesday night—on the Russian national team, Datsyuk was asked what competitions that he’s participated in with Kovalchuk.
“World Cup. Olympics. Baltika Cup. You put that in for me. Baltika (maker of a Russian beer). Free promotion for Russian business. Maybe they send me send bucks.”

Pass First

Pavel Datsyuk is an admitted pass-aholic. He would much rather pass than shoot, rather stick-handle than set up for a one-timer.
Lost in Zetterberg’s remarkable opening—he has a franchise record 15-game point streak from season’s start and leads the NHL in scoring—is that his linemate, Datsyuk, has helped turned the Swede into a sniper.
Entering Thursday night’s games, Datsyuk was third in the NHL with 14 assists in 15 games.
“I like passing,” said Datsyuk. “When somebody scores in an open net after my pass is the best. If somebody says, ‘Would you rather score or have somebody score off your pass?’ ... I’d say pass.”
