from the Denver Post,
The Avalanche confirmed Tuesday that the national swine flu scare has hit the team’s bench. Goalie Peter Budaj, out since Friday with flu-like symptoms, is suffering from the H1N1 virus, the team said.
Craig Anderson, who has started in goal in a team record-long 11 games to begin the season, will again be in the net tonight as the Avs take on the host Oilers.
Budaj was set to start in goal last Friday in Denver against Carolina. But he fell ill Thursday afternoon and was scratched. Tyler Weiman was recalled from Lake Erie to backup Anderson and he will remain on the roster.
From the first sign of Budaj’s flu last week, the team was concerned it might be swine flu.

Tough Year For Budaj

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
This was to be Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj’s chance to take the next step — asserting himself as an unquestioned standout No. 1 for an entire season . . . and beyond.
By any standard of judgment, whether statistical or eyeball, Budaj has failed to do that this season.
“I definitely haven’t taken advantage of that chance,” Budaj said Tuesday after the Avalanche’s practice at the Family Sports Center. “The organization has been great. They stood behind me for the entire year. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get it done the way I wanted, and I’m pretty sure not the way they wanted....”

The preseason skeptics pointed toward goaltending as the Avs’ area of worry against the NHL elite. And so far, Peter Budaj hasn’t done anything to shut them up.

Avs Have Been Up & Down

from Terry Frei at ESPN,
Some days, they’re in a playoff spot. Some days, they’re out of it, period.
“I think we’re a ways away from finding out how good we are,” Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said this week. “I don’t think we’ve had any consistency at the top of our game to clarify that identity and find out how good we can be. We’ve had some stretches where we’ve been good and sporadic games where we’ve been at our best. It’s still a motivation to be able to capture that at a consistent level.”
Some of the Avalanche’s problems, but not all of them, can be laid at the crease of goalies Jose Theodore and Peter Budaj, who have been so-so at best and often worse.

Rotating Goalies Working For Avs
by Paul on 11/09/07 at 02:34 PM ET

from the Denver Post,
Colorado takes a 10-5 record into tonight’s game at Vancouver, with Budaj having six of the wins to the four for Theodore, tonight’s starter. The two have alternated starts the past six games and, while Quenne- ville said the rotation might not stay equal for various reasons, he sees no reason to change things now.
“I just think both guys are playing pretty well, and keep ‘em both playing,” Quenneville said. “I think it’s competitive among the two of them. I think it’s healthy, but I think there’s a genuine sincerity that the other guy does well. Both guys had an opportunity to get the net at the start of the year, and they’re both doing what we were hoping they’d do.”
