Forsberg’s Problems
by Paul on 03/23/08 at 08:05 AM ET

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
And for at least one afternoon — when Forsberg had two assists in a home victory over Dallas on March 8 — it seemed that any doubts about the wisdom of the signing were about to be dispelled.
Since then, though, it has been a mess and a four-ring circus that, especially when considered in the context of a bizarre run of injuries to other high-profile players on the roster, has contributed to the Avalanche’s inconsistency and inability to not only jump to the top of the mediocre Northwest Division but stay there.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: While the official explanation — the sport’s “plague,” a groin problem — almost certainly can pass legalistic muster, the bigger problems that have bedeviled Forsberg since his return to the lineup remains the same old problems.
His foot and ankle.

Forsberg Needs To Play His Game
by Paul on 03/19/08 at 01:24 PM ET

from All Things Avs,
...He fires up the opposing team, and crowd, too much by trying to be Steve McQueen on the ice and going after anyone who hits him. What happens is, Player X from the other team lays a big hit on him. Foppa gets mad and either tries to run said player, or lifts his hands in frustration to the ref over a non-call. Then the home crowd gets into it, mocking Foppa for whining and the home team gets into it because they know they’re getting Foppa off his game mentally, so they keep hitting him.
So, by then, Foppa is rattled, the home crowd makes it a sport to mock him and goes nuts when the next home team player lays the next hit on him. Forsberg would be much better off just letting it go, playing a skill game and avoiding all the rough stuff.

Avs Still Missing Smyth & Forsberg

from the CP via TSN,
Ryan Smyth and Peter Forsberg were both kept out of the Colorado Avalanche’s lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.
Smyth skated effortlessly earlier in the day and showed no signs of the concussion and shoulder injury that forced him to miss five games. Forsberg, out with a strained groin, didn’t take the ice at all in the Avalanche’s morning skate.

The Mysterious Forsberg

from All Things Avs,
Never have I encountered a more mystifying person and player than Forsberg. As soon as you feel like things are going to be fine with him, something always pops up. That’s why I was surprised for about, oh, a tenth of a second last night when Avs Vice President, PR man and Official Voice of the Avalanche, Jean Martineau, told me Forsberg wouldn’t play because of a groin issue.
Here’s what I think might be the case: Forsberg wasn’t going to play all along last night. But rather than just say he was too tired to play, they said he had a groin pull.
Why they would do that, though, if that’s the case, doesn’t make a lot of sense. Why get the fans all worried - as they always are about No. 21 - by saying he’s hurt again?

from Woody Paige of the Denver Post,
He was Peter the Very Good.
The Avalanche was great.
Afterward he had a grin that couldn’t have been removed with a hammer and a chisel.
“Every morning since I got to Denver, I wake up smiling and looking out at the sunshine. Definitely, it’s great to be back,” Peter Forsberg said.
“And I played OK.”
It was as if he never left.

“He’s huge,” said Per Karlquist, chairman of Denver’s Swedish American Chamber of Commerce. “He’s second to the king.”
So who’s third? Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom maybe?
“No,” Karlquist says. “The queen.”...
“He’s the Michael Jordan of hockey,” said Chris Fuselier, owner of the Blake Street Tavern in LoDo and an original Avs season-ticket holder. “This is one of the three most exciting things to ever happen to the Avs — when they traded for Patrick Roy and Ray Bourque, and now bringing Forsberg back. They had become a nonstory, but things are going to be hopping now.”

Forsberg Feels He Can Add To The Avs

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Forsberg said Monday he hadn’t had a setback, but rather he didn’t want teams holding off on other plans by waiting on him. In short, he didn’t want teams depending on him. That’s not necessarily a good thing.
There are many reasons Forsberg ended up back in Colorado. One of them, apparently, is the Avs made it clear they were going to share the risk with Forsberg because risk is part of the package when dealing with Forsberg….
“I miss playing hockey,” he said. “It’s hard when you’re sitting on the side when I think I can go out and do good.”
Update 10:39pm ET: The Ice Block informs us that the NHL didn’t waste any time capitalizing on the return of Foppa.

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has come to terms with unrestricted free agent Peter Forsberg on a new contract through the 2007-2008 season.
“We’re proud to announce to our fans that Peter Forsberg has decided to come back and play with our franchise where he’s enjoyed so much success early in his career,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “His addition should complement our roster and will bring our team to an even higher competitive level.”

Peter Forsberg is not ruling out an NHL comeback even though his agent says it’s unlikely.
Forsberg told Swedish TV on Tuesday he still hopes his foot will recover in time for the Feb. 26 deadline to sign up with an NHL team.
“The foot doesn’t feel 100 (percent), but there is still one week left until the deadline,” Forsberg told national broadcaster SVT.

Blackhawks Could Pay Forsberg
by Paul on 02/14/08 at 10:25 AM ET

from Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald,
While it’s believed Forsberg would prefer to sign with a team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup right now—if he decides to even play again—the Hawks are in the picture because of their financial flexibility beyond this season.
Forsberg has told the Hawks he hopes to play for a few more years if he can skate on his gimpy feet and ankles, and it’s likely the deal Tallon has presented Forsberg is for at least two years past this one, perhaps in the neighborhood of $5 million a year.

Time to ease up folks, when he decides what he is going to do, you will know, but the latest is he is still unsure if his foot/ankle will hold up.

OK, this is no joke.
According to an NHL source with inside knowledge of the situation, the Blackhawks are among a handful of teams still in the picture to sign Peter Forsberg.
According to sources, Forsberg likes the direction the Hawks are going and he is intrigued about the possibility of playing with talented rookies Jonathon Toews and Patrick Kane.
Hawks general manager Dale Tallon did not want to comment extensively on the Forsberg situation.
“We’re in the mix,” was all Tallon wanted to say Saturday morning.

It Could Happen Again Next Year

Fan590 radio in Toronto had a reporter/friend of Forsberg’s on yesterday. He said Forsberg wants to play in a city that he feels he is comfortable in and sign only for this season. He would basically showcase himself to other teams for next year, showing he is in playing shape.
Of course, he could do exactly what he is doing now, wait until next February to play, unless the NHL steps in with some type of ruling.

from Jim Kelley at Sportsnet,
Pardon me if this comes off as anti-Swede or even a mangling of the French Canadian language, but bringing Peter Forsberg back to the NHL at this point of the season is a monumental faux pas.
The idea that any time prior to the NHL trading deadline of February 26 (the day NHL rosters are frozen) any team can sign him and inject him into their lineup is not just a bastardization of all that should be logical and decent in regards to NHL roster rules, but it also makes a mockery of the idea of team building and the value of playing a full NHL season.

Forsberg Unsure Of His Return

from the Philadelphia Inquirer,
Forsberg may have instructed his agent, Don Baizley, to canvass offers for his services, but neither the 34-year-old center nor anyone else is certain he will return to the NHL this winter or spring. The center’s ailing right foot continues to be problematic.
Holmgren, who spoke directly to Forsberg during his scouting mission in Sweden, cannot get a handle on his status.
“I honestly don’t have a feel for what his decision will be, and I didn’t get to see him skate,” Holmgren said. “From talking to him, I’m not sure he is ready in his own mind. He doesn’t seem to know if he’s OK. When he’s ready, he’ll make a decision.”

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
Sources tell TSN that Forsberg’s agent Don Baizley has been given the green light by his client to start the process of talking to NHL teams that may be interested in the talented but oft injured Swedish forward who is making one final attempt to overcome troublesome and chronic foot problems.
But it should be made clear that beginning the process of talking to NHL teams - which Baizley has reportedly done with a number of franchises - about a potential contract is not to be confused with a firm commitment from Forsberg that he’s ready to return to the NHL.

Taking A Chance With Forsberg
by Paul on 01/20/08 at 09:38 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Chuck Gormley of the CourierPost,
The Flyers are believed to be at the top of Forsberg’s list and if Paul Holmgren can devise a suitable contract offer, Forsberg could be wearing orange and black as early as Valentine’s Day, when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Flyers at the Wachovia Center.
With a few tweaks, the Flyers can create between $2.5 million and $3 million in cap space. If they offer Forsberg $1 million to play the final 26 games (52 days) of the regular season, his prorated salary of $3.54 million would count against the cap.
If they offer him $750,000 to play the remainder of the season, $2.65 million would count against the cap.
Judging from Forsberg’s recent comments, he’ll want a contract that includes next season and perhaps another, taking him through the 2009-10 season. If that is the case, the aforementioned salary figures (between $2.6 million and $3.5 million) would likely count against the Flyers’ cap….
Which brings us back to our original question: Should the Flyers do it?

Forsberg Has Many Teams To Choose From
by Paul on 01/14/08 at 02:08 PM ET

from Chuck Gormley at the Sporting News,
Forsberg said he plans on testing his foot on skates in a few days and is “very hopeful” of a successful comeback. As for the Flyers’ chances of getting him, Forsberg was non-committal.
“It’s nice to hear that they want me back and I enjoyed my time in the Flyers organization,” Forsberg said. “It’s one of many options. I haven’t decided even if I will play yet. And I read somewhere that I am only interested in playing for one of the three clubs I’ve played for (Colorado, Philadelphia and Nashville). But I have never said that. I have a lot of options and Flyers are one of them.”
Forsberg said he will make a decision on his return to the NHL as soon as he believes his foot can withstand the rigors of the NHL. He said he understands the NHL imposes a roster freeze following the Feb. 26 trade deadline, “but I hope it will be sooner than that.”

from Adrian Dater at All Things Avs,
OK, here’s my prediction of something soon regarding the Avalanche: they will make a BIG pitch to Peter Forsberg IF IF IF he decides he can play again this year. That decision should come soon. I’m not hearing anything overly negative about his latest condition, so it might happen.
Here’s why the Avs will make a big pitch if he wants to play: First, he’s still Peter Forsberg. Second, the Avs are DESPERATE for some offensive punch right now. Third, the Avs need to get some buzz back with their fans and sell some tickets.

from Darren Dreger of TSN,
At the risk of generating a whirlwind of speculation, Peter Forsberg believes there is reason to hope he can return to the NHL this season. He’s said to be “cautiously optimistic.”...
To date, Forsberg has avoided any contract or meaningful discussions with teams that would lead to a commitment. However, he has acknowledged his fondness for the 3 NHL teams he has played for, namely Colorado, Philadelphia and Nashville.
Perhaps, wishful thinking, however sources close to the Flyers believe Philadelphia to be Forsberg’s destination of choice.

Would Sundin Leave Toronto

from Pierre LeBrun at Sporstnet,
Given Monday’s setback in Sweden when Forsberg left practice with the national team after feeling some discomfort in his right foot, who knows what it means for his NHL future?
Which brings things back to Sundin.
His contract is up after the season. He’s the perfect rental. Whether or not Sundin would want to leave Toronto and whether or not Ferguson would want to trade the big Swede is a question no one has the answer for at this point. Sundin insists he wants to win in Toronto and doesn’t want to leave. Time will tell.

Sens Should Forget Foppa - Get Sundin Instead
by Paul on 11/05/07 at 06:54 AM ET

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
If you had your choice between a broken-down, unreliable Forsberg and a rejuvenated Sundin playing his best hockey in years, which one would you want? In fact, any team that is considering picking up Forsberg at this point must also consider making a pitch for Sundin. The Leafs are still in the playoff picture only because they’ve played more games than anyone else in the Eastern Conference, but it’s not likely to last.
There’s no way Leafs GM John Ferguson would be willing to make a trade for the long-term future with his immediate future in so much doubt. That’s why until the Leafs either fire him or give him a long-term extension, the team’s board of directors should be the ones mandating personnel moves. This is one they should make for the good of the franchise.

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
Why the Senators would want anything to do with Forsberg in the first place is mystifying because – read this out loud a number of times if you have to – Forsberg is nowhere near being the player he once was. He plays on the perimeter and while his vision and passing skills are as sharp as ever, his body is broken down and he literally cannot be counted upon from one game to the next.

Report: Forsberg May Return by November 15
by Alanah McGinley on 10/21/07 at 06:32 AM ET

From Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun,
Is Peter Forsberg ready to return to the NHL?
The unrestricted free-agent centre continues to skate with MoDo of the Swedish Elite League amid talk he could be back in the NHL by mid-November if his rehab goes smoothly.
The one thing you can count on with Forsberg, who is recovering from off-season groin and ankle surgeries, is that he won’t return unless he’s 100%. NHL insiders are saying that Forsberg could be targeting a Nov. 15 return.
Sources say the Avalanche, Stars and Flyers have all made serious overtures to Forsberg in the past 10 days or so. Make no mistake about it, Forsberg is going to attract plenty of interest.

Foppa Loves Crocs
by Paul on 10/19/07 at 08:45 AM ET

from All Things Avs,
This info. is this: The money Foppa makes from playing hockey now is PEANUTS compared to what he’s raking in from the sales of Crocs in his native Sweden.
My source said that last year, Forsberg - through his business interest of companies he calls Pforce, and distibutes Crocs in Sweden - needed to sell about 38,000 pairs of the comfy plastic shoes to “break even” financially. And how many did he sell through just HALF the year?
Almost 700,000 pairs, he said. And guess how much Crocs sell for in Sweden? About $90 a pair. I don’t know Foppa’s total take on each sale, but it’s safe to say he’s making money in the multiple millions of dollars - or, in Sweden, the Krona - just from that alone.

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Alfredsson said he’s not sure if he pulls more weight than Leafs captain and countryman Mats Sundin, but indicated if Forsberg wants a realistic chance to win a championship then Ottawa would be a better choice than Toronto.
“I don’t know, but I think our situation should be able to catch (Forsberg’s) eye,” Alfredsson said yesterday. “Looking at the team we have and the opportunity we have here, I’m sure he’ll realize how close we were last year and he could be the one who could add that little bit of extra confidence for us.”
Senators GM Bryan Murray, who is trying to add a top-six forward, has spoken with Forsberg’s agent, Don Baizley, three times and has also asked Alfredsson to phone Forsberg and talk up Ottawa.
