Pens Schooling of Sabres Shows What it Takes

After getting 9 out of 12 possible points in their last 6 games, and with Ryan Miller finding his groove again, you had to think maybe the Sabres were starting to get their swagger back. What better time to take on a powerhouse red-hot Stanley Cup contender on an 11-game winning streak to see where you’re at?
As it turned out, the Pittsburgh Penguins came into HSBC Arena last night and gave a lesson on what separates the big boys from the lesser teams like Buffalo. The Sabres came through with a pretty strong effort against a truly elite team. They showed some heart and, for the first two periods anyway, went at the Pens pretty hard.
But it still wasn’t good enough as Pittsburgh never trailed and scored a 5-2 win. While Sabres big guns Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek were whiffing on their scoring chances, Pens lesser-knowns like Arron Asham and Mike Rupp were cashing in on theirs.
For all of the positives that you can come up with about Buffalo’s recent streak, last night confirmed a disheartening truth about this group. The Sabres fall way short when matched up against quality teams. They’re now 2-12-1 against clubs that are seeded in the top 6 in either conference.

Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk
Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.
Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava
Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

The youngest captain of a Stanley Cup champion apparently needs to win over NHL writers and players, but not members of his organization.
Penguins center Sidney Crosby finished third in voting for the Hart Trophy (MVP) to Vancouver Canucks center and NHL scoring leader Henrik Sedin, who also bested Crosby for a spot on the NHL’s first All-Star team.
The Hart and All-Star teams are voted on by select members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Crosby named top athlete under 25 by Sporting News

The Penguins’ Sidney Crosby has been named the top athlete under the age of 25 by Sporting News magazine.
“25 Under 25: SN’s List of Best Young Athletes” appears in the June 21 edition of the magazine.
The Sporting News panel considered 100 accomplished young athletes from seven different sports before trimming the list to 50 and then the final 25.
Athletes were judged on major stats; championships to which they’d made major contributions; buzz factor; and age.

According to James Mirtle, Crosby isn’t even anywhere near the league leaders in secondary assists.
So while there are plenty valid complaints of Crosby’s game (he tends to go down a little too easily sometimes in order to draw penalties in our book), ripping him for loading up on secondary assists in order to bulk up his points totals is stupid and inaccurate.

Mark Recchi Has Something to Prove

Recchi, claimed off re-entry waivers by the Thrashers on Saturday, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he believes Penguins coach Michel Therrien was too quick to remove him from the top line and No. 1 power-play unit.
“They’ll see,” Recchi told the paper. “I didn’t get 68 points for no reason last year. In the first seven or eight games [this season], I had a point a game until the coach decided to move me down two or three lines for whatever reason. I still haven’t figured it out.”

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is the winner of the Lou Marsh Award.
The honour, decided by a panel of sports editors and broadcasters, is given annually to Canada’s outstanding athlete by the Toronto Star. Other finalists in a close vote were Steve Nash, Erik Guay, Adam van Koeverden and Steve Molitor.
The Lou Marsh Award is named after a former Toronto Star sports editor.

Crosby will likely be climbing the walls by the time his trip to Western Canada concludes. His passion runs high for playing games in Canada, but his time away from the rink is spent keeping a low profile. In other words, Crosby won’t be found looking for a postgame pint on Electric Avenue in Calgary.
“Probably a little busier, more interviews,” the reigning NHL MVP said when asked about the difference between playing in Canada and the United States.

I asked Crosby about the team’s rather uneven start, postulating that maybe the young core group overlooked how well teams would prepare for them after the Penguins’ successful 2006-07 campaign. He replied, “I don’t think that’s it. We went through it last year when there was a lot of attention paid to us. We are a young group and we’re gaining experience all the time. We’ve been playing good hockey lately and hopefully we can start getting some results.”
They have been losing a lot of close games, which is disconcerting in that they excelled at winning them during the second half of last season. “The difference is in making plays” Crosby offered. “Whether it is a pass, a hit, blocked shot or save, we need to make plays at the right time. We’re starting to do that more consistently.”

Pens Need To Make A Move

There is no aspect of the Penguins’ performance to date with which management should be particularly pleased.
Consequently, aside from the nucleus of players who are either elite young talents or have the potential to be there should be no untouchables when Shero is discussing potential trades.
That doesn’t mean a roster-wide purge is in order but sticking with the status quo will become more of a high-risk strategy with every point the Penguins surrender if they don’t start to string together some victories.

Crosby Always Working

At 9:03 yesterday morning, with the players’ parking area at Mellon Arena nearly empty and his teammates possibly still home in bed, Sidney Crosby walked into the West Igloo Lounge and greeted about a dozen people.
He was sized up by two clothes stylists and shown some black duds hung on a rack and placed on tables.
This was no indulgent personal shopping spree for the popular Penguins captain. Crosby arrived for work early to devote more than an hour to ESPN The Magazine, which is doing photo shoots with several top-caliber athletes across the country in advance—well in advance—of its 10th anniversary issue in March.

Gonchar Plays Like an All Star, but…

Gonchar is not listed on its All-Star ballot. According to a league spokesperson, the hockey operations department has the final decision on the All-Star ballot, which was finalized at the end of October and based on performance from previous seasons.
Gonchar ranked second, eighth, first and second (tied) in scoring by defensemen after each of the past four seasons.
“And I would still definitely say he is underrated,” defenseman Ryan Whitney said. “But players know how good he is, and that is what is important to him.”
Gonchar is the only current defenseman to record at least 50 points in each of the past seven seasons. He has scored more goals (104) than any defenseman dating to 2000, and his 385 points during that span are second to only Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom, who has 391.
Rossi also notes that Gonchar currently has 19 points through 20 games this season—tied for first among all NHL defensemen.

Out With The Old

But the feelings of veterans shouldn’t matter when a team is based on youth. Unless the Penguins arrive a bit early, Recchi, Roberts and Sydor will almost certainly not be around when the team wins its next Stanley Cup. So who cares how they feel? Respect them. But don’t placate them. Don’t treat them with kid gloves when they play badly.
If anybody feels Roberts is still worth anything, Shero should trade him. Try calling north of the border, Ray. If his misguided raging-bull style on the ice is any indication, Roberts is not handling his decline well.
Recchi and Sydor can still help in lesser roles. Just make sure they have lesser roles.

Penguins Need Help - Not Just In Goal

The most fascinating aspect of the Penguins’ struggle is that it provides us the first opportunity to gauge what kind of administrator general manager Ray Shero will be. Because this is his first GM job, we have no history to review.
But my hunch is Shero will be able to walk the fine line between aggressiveness and panic. I believe he will continue to look for scoring wingers, and I believe he will continue to be patient with Fleury. I believe he will be more patient with Fleury than his coach seems to be. I think if Shero believed Fleury needed an older goalie playing beside him, he would have acquired one last summer.

It seems like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are the only ones scoring points for the Penguins these days. That’s partially true. Through Monday’s games, Crosby and Malkin are the only players on the same team to each contribute at least 17 percent of their team’s offense. In other words, they probably could use some help from some other players:

The Pittsburgh Penguins can say all they want about how they’re still pleased with the development of Jordan Staal, but the fact remains Staal has been one of the major disappointments of the early season.
Of course, he’s not alone on the Penguins who, if you can believe it, go into Tuesday night’s games with the fourth-worst winning percentage in the NHL.

Pens Not Worried About Staal Slump

Several adjustments have played a factor in Staal’s scoring slump. He has worked as a center most of this season after playing on the wing last year. Also, he is no longer skating alongside Evgeni Malkin, who assisted on 11 of Staal’s 22 non-shorthanded goals last season.
Even though he was a minus-6 player with a 3.8 shooting percentage, Staal had the backing of his coach, who sees him “in more of a defensive role.”
“He is a good defensive forward,” Therrien said. “He surprised a lot of people with his offensive numbers. I was not expecting that.
“We would like him to have more goals, but he is working hard. I am not worried about him at all.”

Shero has made it quite clear what he won’t do.

The Sabres announced today that more tickets will be made available:
Larry Quinn, Managing Partner of the Buffalo Sabres today announced the organization has secured 4,500 obstructed-view seats from the NHL for the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic that will be sold for $10 each through a random selection process at Sabres.com.
Also, info on the retro jerseys to be worn at the game:
Buffalo will wear the white version of the jersey worn by the club from 1978-79 through 1995-96, which features the familiar circular logo of the charging buffalo over crossed sabers. Pittsburgh will return to the powder blue version worn from 1968-69 through 1972-73. This marks the first time the Penguins will wear powder blue since switching to black and gold in 1980.

Brodeur Sees Bright Future for Marc-Andre Fleury

“He’s such a great athlete,” Brodeur said. “What I look at is a guy’s ability to skate, and he’s a really good skater. The foundation is his mobility, how athletic he is, how competitive he is.

“But when he finds a way to put everything together, relax and be patient, he has so much skill, so much speed, that he’s going to be all right. I love watching him play, because he’s a spectacular goalie.”

Pens Need Some “Dirty” Goals

After the Penguins’ 3-2 loss on Long Island Saturday, Therrien spoke of their inability to get breaks of late. But a few hours earlier, he suggested that some of his forwards have been reluctant to venture into the areas where blue-collar goals are scored.
“When a player struggles offensively, you have to get the dirty goals,” Therrien said. “This is how it’s going to start for those guys. You just have to put the puck at the net and go there and get whacked. Eventually, you’ll get rewarded. Right now, too many players are playing on the outside.”

Tuesday morning, Lemaire raved about Penguins phenom and Shattuck-St. Mary’s product Sidney Crosby. Tuesday night, Lemaire watched Crosby become the third opponent ever to score four points at Xcel Energy Center, in Pittsburgh’s 4-2 victory.
Lemaire praised Wes Walz’s checking line for its defense on Crosby—even though Crosby’s line produced nine points.
The performance left Lemaire feeling covetous. “I’d love to have one on our club,” he said of Crosby, “if they make any more.”

Habs Calling for Rule Change

The Montreal Canadiens are calling for an NHL rule change after defenceman Francis Bouillon suffered a shoulder injury from a hit in the dying seconds of overtime.
The Canadiens feel that Pittsburgh defenceman Sergei Gonchar should not have been allowed to take part in a shootout after he was called for boarding with 1.6 seconds left in the five-minute overtime in Montreal’s 4-3 win over the Penguins on Saturday night.

Crosby’s “Wild Fever”

When “Sid the Kid” really was a kid, or more accurately a hotshot teenager burning out red goal lights for fun at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minn., Crosby, like thousands of Minnesotans, got caught up in Wild Fever. It was 2003, and the Wild was in the midst of its Cinderella run to the Western Conference finals. Crosby, a native of Nova Scotia, was 15 years old attending the Minnesota boarding school/hockey haven, and he spent many nights cheering on the Wild down at 7th and Kellogg.
“When Minnesota made the run there, I was lucky enough to see all the playoff games and go to games as a fan,” Crosby said during a telephone interview. “I went to five or 10 games during the year, too, and every game was sold out. Even for a regular-season game, the atmosphere there is pretty amazing.
“But in the playoffs, especially, it was a fun place to be. I remember thinking, ‘Boy, this would be a cool place to play,’ so it’s kind of fun that I’m going to have a chance to finally play there.”

Fleury Feeling It Again

Last season, Fleury became the Pens’ undisputed No. 1 goaltender, finishing with a save percentage of .906. However, the whispering started when the Penguins were quickly dispatched in the first round of the playoffs by the Ottawa Senators.
Those whispers grew much louder a few weeks ago when the Penguins did not start well. Sidney Crosby may not have been scoring, and still isn’t, but it was Fleury who took the criticism.
“The one thing we can’t forget is that [Fleury] is the youngest No. 1 goalie in the league,” Penguins head coach Michel Therrien said yesterday. “He is still learning. It seemed a lot of people were panicking, but we weren’t panicking because we knew his game was going to get back where it was supposed to be.”

Penguins center Jordan Staal yesterday accepted a plea deal through attorneys that resolves his case in Cook County, Minn., stemming from a late, loud bachelor party for his brother Eric.
Cook County prosecutor Tim Scannell said in an e-mail interview that Jordan Staal, 19, accepted a deal in which he pled guilty to reduced charges of petty misdemeanor disorderly conduct and underage drinking. He will pay $737 in fines.
Scannell said Eric Staal, a center for Carolina, accepted a similar deal, without the underage drinking charge.

A marketing firm representing Versus emailed many of the hockey bloggers recently asking them to display an “exclusive” video on Sid.
KK displayed that “exclusive” video last week, which can be seen here, so I wonder how exclusive it really is.

“We’ve got confidence in Marc-Andre Fleury,” Therrien said. “He won a lot of games for us last year. We believe in the kid. He just needs to be himself.
“Right now, we’re not panicking. We know that he’s going to get better. It’s a matter of time. There’s nothing wrong with facing adversity for a player or as a team because you know that eventually it’s going to make you better.”
General manager Ray Shero also backs Fleury and denied a report by TSN’s Bob McKenzie that the Penguins are shopping for a veteran goaltender to back up and perhaps challenge Fleury.

Caps Plan A “White-Out”

We’re going to jump the gun a bit here and briefly preview the Penguins-Capitals game in Washington Saturday.
Many EN readers have told us of the Capitals’ attempts to minimize the healthy contingent of Penguins fans that usually show up at Verizion Center anytime the Penguins are in town. We went to both Penguins games in Washington last season and there were at least 5,000 Penguins fans in the house each game.
The Capitals are attempting to stage a “white-out” night and are encouraging their fans to wear white to the game. They are also handing out white towels to the first 15,000 that show up.

One Final Payment For Mario

The Penguins have settled with the final creditor from their bankruptcy of the late 1990s.
He also happens to be the most celebrated player in franchise history and one of the team’s primary owners.
Mario Lemieux, who was owed $32 million in deferred compensation on the contract in effect when he retired as a player in 1997, will receive $21 million in the wake of a periodic refinancing of the team’s debt earlier this week.

Mathematical incompetence and late game scores from out west prevent us from formally updating the goal table.

Ghosts of Mellon Arena

It was 40 years ago tonight—Oct. 11, 1967—that the Penguins played their first game, a 2-1 loss to Montreal—the same opponent they faced last night.
The Canadiens took a 2-0 lead in that game on a first-period, short-handed goal by Gilles Tremblay and a second-period goal by Jean Beliveau (the 400th of his career) before Andy Bathgate scored the first goal in Penguins’ history at 7:06 of the third period against goaltender Rogie Vachon.
Attendance was 9,307 in an arena that did not yet have balconies and whose roof could still open, but did not for hockey games.
Do you believe in ghosts? There’s something about Mellon Arena, or at least this city’s hockey teams, and goaltenders.

“We were playing well until we scored that first goal,” Therrien said. “After that, there’s no desperation on our part. That’s got to stop. They’re not consistent on the effort.”
Therrien was talking specifically about Wednesday’s game, but that lament applies to the overall pattern he’s seen through the team’s 1-2 start.
“We don’t have the fire in our eyes like we did last year,” Therrien said. “Some guys are going to have to really pick it up.”

Despite a report by the Hockey News that the Senators and Penguins will play next season in Prague, the word from NHL officials is the Lightning is still the league’s first choice to play Pittsburgh to open next season and Ottawa is the backup.

Report: Sens and Pens to Open ‘08 in Prague

The Hockey News is reporting that the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins will drop the puck in Prague on a compressed schedule next season.
Sources have told the Hockey News that the season will be pushed back by about a week and will begin either October 9th or 10th. In order to accommodate the change, the league will further compress the schedule early in the season rather than late in the season to avoid the season running one week longer.

Sydor Still in Transition with Penguins

When Darryl Sydor takes the ice Wednesday in the Penguins’ game against Montreal, it will be a milestone night for the 35-year-old defenseman.
He officially will pass Mike Ricci on the all-time games played list and will join an elite group of players who have appeared in 1,100 career games.
Including the Penguins, Sydor has played for five teams in his NHL career. He won the Stanley Cup in 1999 with Dallas and 2004 with Tampa Bay and has played in two All-Star games. But through his first two games with the Penguins, the seventh overall pick in the 1990 draft by the Los Angeles Kings has had some problems adapting to the defensive system run by coach Michel Therrien.

They became teammates in July. And Wednesday, they will officially become co-owners of a hockey team.
Recchi and Sydor are part of a five-man group that has negotiated the acquisition of their old Western Hockey League club, the Kamloops Blazers, for a reported $7 million.

Evgeni’s Year

There’s no hiding Evgeni Malkin any longer.
Malkin, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 21-year-old Russian star, was forced to sneak away from his homeland pro team and make his way clandestinely to the United States last year to play in the NHL.
Once he finally arrived in Pittsburgh, it was evident very quickly what the Penguins had: A young scorer who not only complemented league MVP Sidney Crosby but often made him better. Malkin had 33 goals and 52 assists for 85 points, one of the best seasons for a first-year player in NHL history.

Next NHL Stop- Prague

The NHL is planning to start its 2008-09 season with a short series, likely two games, in Prague, Czech Republic. The series likely would involve the Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Penguins had no comment, but multiple league sources said they were being considered for participation in the league’s next oversees series. Those sources said that many details still must be worked out before an official announcement, but that the Penguins and Lightning were the league’s preferred participants for a regular-season series in Prague.

As a result of both his and the team’s success this past season, the dynamic has changed. Crosby has shown what his hard work, determination, feistiness and immense skill can do.The team also climbed to another level, thus the expectations for both grow, knowing the expectations for the team can’t be fulfilled without The Kid meeting his.
“It doesn’t really feel a whole lot different,” he says of the pressure. “I think I put so much pressure on myself every year to perform that whether I had a good year or bad year last year I’ve learned to erase that season no matter how it went.We want to win, obviously. It’s a lot easier said than done, but like I said, just because we made the playoffs doesn’t mean it’s a gimme this year….”
