Phaneuf Hit On Umberger

via Tom Reed of Puck-rakers,

R.J. Umberger had a strong game with two goals and nearly a third midway through the third period. And if that wasn’t enough he was hammered from behind by Dion Phaneuf in the first period, drawing a game misconduct for boarding. Umberger smacked his cheek hard against the glass, but said he was mostly just dazed.

“I’m lucky I was so close to the boards,” he said. “If I were a little further out, I could have been in trouble.”

Chatting with the Flyers

From a press conference Q&A session featuring Philadelphia Flyers players Daniel Briere, R.J. Umberger, and Martin Biron.

Q.  Danny, the way you’ve played this season and, the way the team has played overall this season, does this further validate your decision to leave the Sabres and go to the Flyers?

DANIEL BRIERE:  You know what, when I was looking at my options, obviously looking at Philly, you know, very similar as far as offense, where it’s a team that doesn’t just rely on one or two guys or on just one line.  We’ve seen it through the year.  Everybody’s chipping in.

Flyers Lose Two

From the Sports Network via WJAC,

Struggling to get into the postseason, the Philadelphia Flyers learned on Monday that defenseman Derian Hatcher will be out for the season with a fractured right tibia and forward R.J. Umberger will miss the next two weeks with a sprained MCL.

Hatcher was hurt with 12:07 left in the first period of Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Boston while blocking a slap shot by Bruins forward Andrew Ference. Hatcher was helped off the ice and did not return.  The right leg was broken just above the ankle and was placed in a cast on Saturday. It is possible he might return to play if the Flyers make the postseason.

MySpaced NHLers

From Chuck Gormley at the Sporting News,

“Go on MySpace and type in anybody in this (locker) room and there will be someone posing,” said [Flyers’ center Jeff] Carter, who is single. “I have a friend who said she sent pictures to my MySpace and I don’t even have a MySpace. She said, ‘Oh, I’ve been talking to you for the past month and a half.’”

Umberger, who is married, went online and discovered there were four people posing as him on their own web pages. When he found that some were soliciting women, he had all four accounts canceled.

“They talk to girls on there like they’re me,” he said. “People out there think they’re talking to me and they’re asking, ‘Aren’t you married?’ It’s ridiculous. Everybody on this team has a fake one and people believe it.”
