Rhett Warrener Named Scout For Flames

Calgary, AB – Calgary Flames General Manager announced today that former Flames defenceman Rhett Warrener has joined the organization in a scouting position. Warrener will work closely with Director of Player Personnel Duane Sutter and Pro Scout Ron Sutter in identifying professional talent as well as assisting with the development process of prospects currently in the organization.

The former assistant captain with the Flames missed the entire 2008-09 NHL season due to a career ending shoulder injury. Over the course of a 13 year NHL career, Warrener played 714 games accumulating 106 points and 899 penalty minutes. He competed in three Stanley Cup Finals with Florida (1996), Buffalo (1999) and Calgary (2004) and played a total of 101 playoff games. Originally drafted by Florida, 27th overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, he was acquired by the Flames on July 3, 2003 in a trade with Buffalo.

Is This The End For Warrener?

from Jean Lefebvre of the Calgary Herald,

Rhett Warrener isn’t quite ready to call it a career.

“Until that bridge is burned and there’s no coming back,” said the ailing Flames blueliner, “you still think in the back of your head, ‘maybe I’ll end up playing.’ “

Still, there are moments the 32-year-old cowpoke from Saskatchewan--who hasn’t played a real game since March --can’t help but wonder if it’s time to ride off into the sunset. It’s an overused term, but “warrior” is an apt description for a rearguard who’s battled his entire career. But when doctors hint at drastic measures like shoulder replacement surgery, you can’t help but wonder about the value of fighting against the dying of the light.

Warrener Goes On Long Term Injury Status

via the Calgary Flames,

Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that defenseman Rhett Warrener has been placed on Long Term Injury status.

Warrener missed three games during the preseason due to an injury sustained on September 26th. This injury, combined with extensive damage from previous seasons, has made it impossible for Warrener to start the regular season.

Long Term Injury status is available to players who will be unavailable for at least 10 NHL regular season games and 24 calendar days.

Flames forward Dustin Boyd has been recalled from the Quad City Flames.

Preseason Means Something

from James Duthie of TSN,

“These are like playoff games to me,” (Rhett) Warrener says. “I am a lot more nervous now for these than I have been for regular season games in years. I used to hate them (preseason games). Now I wish there were more."…

“This is still my dream ... to play in the NHL,’’ Warrener says. ‘’Calgary is my home. Playing for the Flames is my life. It scares me to think it could be taken away.”

Warrener In The Best Shape Of His Career

from the Calgary Sun,

“Yeah, I think so. I hate hearing guys (say), ‘Ah, I’m in the best shape ever. Blah, blah, blah.’ That basically says maybe I didn’t work hard enough in the past,” Warrener said yesterday.

“But I think you do get wiser and smarter as you go on and, as the years go by, you take better care of yourself.

“Certainly, I feel as good as I’ve ever felt at the start of the exhibition season.”

Warrener looks nowhere near his listed weight of 215 lb., and while he won’t disclose exact numbers, it’s safe to say he dropped more than the 10 pounds Jarome Iginla shed during the last off-season.
