Voting for Hart
by Alanah McGinley on 03/17/08 at 12:48 PM ET

From Mike Brophy at The Hockey News,
It’s almost time to vote for the Hart Trophy and I’ve got to be honest, I am not even close to picking my winner.
I will say, though, I have narrowed it down to four candidates – goalies Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks, left winger Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and right winger Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames.
I firmly believe, had Sidney Crosby not missed so much action with that high ankle sprain, he would have repeated as the Hart winner. Oh well.
Update 5:50pm ET: John Glennon at The Tennessean wonders this about Ovechkin,
“His energy and his passion — if you could bottle that and stick it inside your players — you would have an unbelievable team.’’
It sounds like the description of an MVP, but there’s a catch. The Capitals are in a position similar to that of the Predators, two points out of the playoff picture with nine games remaining in the season.
Hence the question: Should Washington fall short of the postseason, should Ovechkin win the MVP? The last player to accomplish such a feat was a guy named Mario Lemieux, who did it while playing for Pittsburgh in 1986-87.

Cut The Flaps
by Paul on 02/19/08 at 07:40 AM ET

from the Vancouver Province,
The NHL has changed its tune with regard to Roberto Luongo’s pads, singling out the Canucks’ star netminder by asking him to chop off his controversial flaps even though other goalies in the league still wear them.
Just two months after Marty Turco and Mike Smith created the so-called “pad flap,” the NHL seems to have reversed its opinion. In response to Turco’s mock protest in December, Kay Whitmore, one of the NHL “goalie police,” said there was nothing wrong with Luongo’s knee flaps, two pieces of equipment that jet out from his leg pads.
Before the Feb. 5 game in Dallas, Luongo was asked by Whitmore to cut them off and he did.
Update 6:00pm ET: From Scott Morrison at CBC,
There has been a flap over the flaps on Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo’s pads. It was first reported that the NHL told him to remove the flaps. Actually, he was told to properly fasten them down, the way they were intended to be worn.

Luongo Facing His Old Team
by Paul on 02/01/08 at 09:37 AM ET

from George Richards of the Miami Herald,
The bottom line is, Luongo always thought a deal was going to be made, and he would remain in Florida. Luongo was the face of the Panthers, and he figured he would be for years. The franchise is led by others now, but Luongo has his piece of its history.
Luongo and the Panthers have moved on. But Friday night’s game is still going to be special.
‘‘I think it’s going to be real emotional for him,’’ said Jokinen, who came to Florida with Luongo in a trade from the New York Islanders in 2000. ``He’s going to have a lot of friends out there.’‘
In the stands, and on the ice, too.

Luongo Finds His Game
by Paul on 01/18/08 at 09:49 AM ET

from the Vancouver Province,
Somewhere among those 49 Detroit shots he found his game.
“I think it was something that I needed,” Luongo said regarding the shot barrage. “I’m happy that I got so many shots. It brought my confidence back up a little bit. I started to feel like myself there.
“They were throwing everything at the net and it got me in the game early and I established a pretty good comfort zone right off the bat.
“I was getting in a pretty good groove there.”...
“He was standing on his head, spinning around, stopping everything,” Sami Salo said. “I don’t even know the word for it. I don’t know if there is a word for it. It was more than unbelievable….”

Luongo Reveals Rib Injury
by Paul on 12/11/07 at 06:30 AM ET

from the Ice Hole,
So, it turns out a “coach’s hunch” is a rib contusion.
Good, now we know.
It was strange to everyone when Roberto Luongo didn’t address the media after the Penguins game Saturday. It was out of character and the first instinct of many was that Luongo was suffering some sort of injury.
The Canucks had made the decision to hide the injury and their commitment to that decision went from the odd to the ridiculous.

Luongo Hiding
by Paul on 12/10/07 at 09:04 AM ET

from the Vancouver Province,
It was acknowledged by team staff that Luongo was in the medical room but did not have an injury.
Given that NHL teams regularly play fast and loose with the truth regarding injuries, speculation swirled that Luongo had picked up an injury. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he have been available?
Luongo was seen by a member of the media sometime later as he was leaving GM Place, but he said he didn’t want to talk.
On Sunday, as the Canucks held an optional practice—attended by just five skaters and back-up goaltender Curtis Sanford—Luongo was still not available, but the team continued to maintain there was no injury to their franchise goalie.

Head-To-Head
by Paul on 12/09/07 at 12:03 PM ET

from the Vancouver Province,
Forget the game, it was a head-to-head that people will be talking about for days, maybe years.
It was two of the best players in hockey, Vancouver’s stalwart netminder against Pittsburgh’s wunderkind forward in two head-to-head battles.
With the spotlight all to themselves, it was Sidney Crosby versus Roberto Luongo in overtime. And then again in a shootout.
I stayed up late last night and caught the whole game and I must say, one of the better games of the year.
Did anyone else catch the stare-down Luongo gave Crosby after stopping his shootout attempt? Watch for yourself (game highlights)...

All Luongo

Roberto Luongo took part in an NHL tele-conference today.
Q. There was a drastic difference in play from October to November. Could you explain some of the changes that may have happened, some of the changes in mentality or in certain X’s and O’s that helped you turn things around a little bit.
ROBERTO LUONGO: Well, I think it’s a bit of both. First of all, we lost two of our top defensemen the first game in November when Kevin and Sami Salo went down. So I think that was pretty much rock bottom for us. As a team we really decided to regroup and realized that, if we’re going to win some games from now on, we’re going to have to work hard, but at the same time we’re going to have to work smart. We adjusted a couple things with our system as far as our forecheck and play in our own zone. Since then it’s really been going well for us.

No Goals Allowed - Is That Allowed?

from the Vancouver Sun,
There is this thing in baseball about a pitcher carrying a no-hitter into the late innings: You never go near him in the dugout and you never, ever say the word “no-hitter.” Never. Ever.
So what are the Vancouver Canucks supposed to do with Roberto Luongo?...
He is shooting for his fourth straight bagel Sunday in Minnesota. The NHL record is five, set by Phoenix’s Brian Boucher four seasons ago.
“The old rule still stands about using the notorious ‘word’ before the end of a game,” Canuck goalie guru Ian Clark chuckled Friday. “Guys get into nicknaming it different things, but they don’t say the dangerous ‘word.’ They’ll use code or talk in various hushed tones, but they don’t want to be caught saying the naughty ‘word’ in case someone hears them.”

Blame The Goalie

from Jamie Fitzpatrick at About.com,
When in doubt, blame the goalie. The following headlines have all appeared in the past seven days. Brief excerpts from the accompanying articles included:
Brodeur Can’t Bear to Look at Stats
The numbers would be bad even for the average guy. For Martin Brodeur, they’re positively ghastly.Where Have You Gone Roberto Luongo?

Blue Jackets Thinking About Luongo
by Paul on 10/21/07 at 09:02 AM ET

from the Columbus Dispatch,
The puck drops for the Blue Jackets against the Canucks today in Nationwide Arena.
But will it ever get past Luongo?
“I’ve played against him a lot of nights when it’s … well, it’s never impossible, but it seems like it,” said Blue Jackets left winger Fredrik Modin, who saw a lot of Luongo—too much, he might say—when Modin played for Tampa Bay and Luongo played for Florida two seasons ago.
“Guys get frustrated. What would be goals against other goalies, Luongo saves. So you feel like you have to be perfect to beat him, and it gets into your head.”

Luongo Appears Fine After Knee Scare
by Paul on 10/08/07 at 08:42 PM ET

from the Vancouver Sun,
Less than 48 hours after avoiding a serious knee injury, Vancouver Canuck goalie Roberto Luongo was back on the ice and practising with his teammates….
“I was able to get through the practice so that’s a good sign,” Luongo said. “This morning it felt much better than yesterday and I was able to walk on it fine. Obviously if it was going to bother me on the ice, I was going to get off. Once it was warmed up, I was fine.”

Oh Roberto!

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
I’ve never been a major proponent of enlarging NHL nets. But when I hear Roberto Luongo threaten retirement if such a thing comes to pass, I want nothing more than to see the NHL go that route.
The audacity and petulance of Luongo’s statement truly is stunning.
continued plus more NHL talk…

Line Of The Day

via the Vancouver Sun,
Cowan lost an edge during a high-speed one-on-one rush and slid hard into the Hart and Vezina Trophy runner-up. The two became entangled in the net and it seemed like an eternity, although it was only seconds, before they were able to regain their feet. Happily no one was injured.
“I was wondering what was going on,” said Luongo, who was able to chuckle about it after the fact. “I thought maybe he took a page out of the Anaheim Ducks’ playbook.”
