Hollweg Suspension Not Long Enough
by Paul on 10/15/08 at 12:08 PM ET

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
If there’s anyone out there who can explain the NHL’s rationale when it comes to meting out discipline, please contact The Hockey News as soon as possible.
Let’s take the Ryan Hollweg suspension, just for fun. Hollweg drills Alex Pietrangelo of the St. Louis Blues into the boards from behind during a game Monday afternoon. It earns him an automatic three-game suspension, his second automatic suspension in a matter of weeks. The league has the latitude and discretion to add as many games as it sees fit, but opts to let a habitual and egregious offender go without any further discipline.

A Dangerous Hockey Player

from Damien Cox at The Spin Blog,
Hollweg is about to receive his second suspension in a matter of weeks, a three-gamer this time for checking from behind, his favourite hockey play.
Let’s be clear. This oaf on skates doesn’t score goals, or set up plays, or generate a forecheck or even protect his teammates. Ever since he’s been in the league, he has been known as a player who does one of three things every time he’s on the ice:
1) Takes about 25 strides and charges an opponent.
2) Leaves his feet to hit an opponent.
3) Hits opponents from behind. He’s a dangerous, dangerous hockey player, and for all the wrong reasons. Everybody knew it before he got here after his years of playing for the Rangers.

Hollweg returns from suspension and promplty hits Alex Pietrangelo of the Blues from behind, 5 minute major and a game. I do believe an automatic suspension comes with it, possibly three games.

from the Globe and Mail,
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Hollweg has been suspended for the first two games of the regular season.
The suspension is tied to a hit from behind during a game last week and for two similar incidents last season when he was a member of the New York Rangers.

Size Doesn’t Matter To Hollweg

from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,
Born in California to a father of Brazilian-German heritage and maxing out at 5-foot-11, Ryan Hollweg knows all about overcoming the hockey odds.
Whether he can help turn around the fortunes of the Maple Leafs this year is unknown, but he certainly has the right attitude. Hollweg got off to a rousing start with several big hits in a 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres Monday.
“If you want to go through somebody, just do it. It’s how I’ve lived,” Hollweg said yesterday at the Air Canada Centre. “I’ve never worried about how big I am. It’s a mental thing. It hasn’t stopped me yet and it won’t stop me now.”

via Sportsnet,
Cliff Fletcher, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the team has obtained left-winger Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers. In exchange, the Rangers will receive Pittsburgh’s fifth-round pick in 2009 which was previously acquired by Toronto in the Hal Gill trade on February 26, 2008.

The Weighted Scale
by Paul on 02/08/08 at 08:13 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
“Gary Bettman made it very clear that I was going to be one of the players watched with a second eye,” said Hollweg, whose suspension was automatic for having been assessed a third game-misconduct this season. “I know they have my number, I know I’m being watched, but what does that have to do with it when I get hit in the face by an elbow?
“It shouldn’t matter who it is. If I do something to another player or if another player does something to me, it should be judged on the same scale.”

Don’t Repeal Instigator Penalty
by Alanah McGinley on 02/04/08 at 02:42 PM ET

From Darren Eliot at SI,
The puck-optional pursuit of punishing checks by these kind of players is the bane of the league because the notion of self-policing always enters the discussion when talk turns to repealing the instigator rule. The theory goes that if players weren’t fearful of getting the extra two-minutes for instigating a fight, Ruutu and Hollweg and players of that ilk would cease and desist if they knew they were going to be on the painful end of a pounding. I’m not so sure. Simon’s attacks didn’t back either guy off and what else can they do? They’re both one-dimensional in their play as well as the exception rather than the rule among NHL players.
No, allowing the instigation of fights because of the acts of a couple of wanton repeat offenders isn’t the answer. Stern suspensions will suffice. The longer the stretches that the league keeps these two thugs off the ice, the better.

Addressing Hits From Behind

from Dan Pollard of TSN,
I’ve changed my tune. I think it’s time to set a standard suspension for hits from behind in the NHL. It can’t hurt.
In the latest incident New York Ranger forward Ryan Hollweg, the man who took a Chris Simon stick to the face a year ago, ran Montreal Canadien Sergei Kostitsyn.
There’s no irony that Hollweg was involved in the two incidents.
In case you missed the hit from Hollweg, you can view it here on KK…

Kovalev Elbows Hollweg Who Then Hits Sergei Kostitsyn

Alex Kovalev delivered an elbow to Holweg that was missed by the refs. Hollweg’s first shift after the hit, delivered a hit from behind on Sergei Kostitsyn.
Ryan Hollweg was given five for boarding and a game. According to Mike Emrick, this type of penalty also brings an automatic one game suspension.

Don’t Touch Those Stitches
by Paul on 11/30/07 at 08:00 AM ET

from the AP via CBS Sportsline,
As players from both teams entered the fray, Martinek said Hollweg threatened him and then reached for his face.
“He said he is going to take my stitches out. I think that was stupid,” said Martinek, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound defenseman.
Martinek added that no damage was done, but said he had never seen a player act in such a way.
“No, no. Never, never,” he said. “I think he could show a little bit of respect, but he didn’t. I cannot respect him.”
Hollweg contended that he was merely defending Orr, a 6-3, 222-pound forward, who has five career points and 239 penalty minutes in 114 NHL games. Simon and Witt had already double-teamed Orr before Martinek got near.
