Report- Rangers, Ryan Smyth Have Mutual Interest
by Paul on 02/03/12 at 10:23 AM ET
Comments (12)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
If Rangers general manager Glen Sather is interested in reuniting with Ryan Smyth by acquiring Edmonton’s veteran left wing to bolster the attack, the feeling may well be a reciprocal one, The Post has learned.
A well-placed source told The Post that Smyth, who was drafted sixth overall in 1994 by Sather and then played the first five years under his direction while he was general manager of the Oilers, would give serious consideration to waiving his no-move clause in order to pursue a Cup on Broadway.
The Eastern Conference-leading Rangers, who have scored 17 goals in their last nine games and have been limited to two goals or fewer in 20 of their 49 matches, are seeking to add both scoring punch and a defenseman in advance of the Feb. 27 trade deadline.

Ryan Smyth With Five For An Elbow And A Game
by Paul on 10/10/11 at 07:58 AM ET

Does he get any more punishment for this elbow on Chris Kunitz?
All I know, Smyth almost cost his team at least a point. The Oilers had tied the game midway in the third penalty, then Smyth takes this major which put the Penguins on the PP for the rest of the 3rd and about 30 seconds into OT.
The Oilers hung-on and won the game in the shootout.

With NHL training camps just around the corner, hopes are high and everyone looks to their crystal and magic 8 balls to make their predictions for the coming season. Fans, media and players alike have ideas on what to expect. If there is any point in the season to be full of hope and optimism, surely that time is now. After all, the team hasn’t lost any games, no one has been a healthy scratch, and the IR list should be blank.*

Fraser Feud

It has been common to just use the word gate behind any misunderstanding or wrongdoing. In this case, I don’t believe that the Oilers set out to pull the wool over the heads of the Kings. So, I hereby propose this subject be called the Fraser Feud.
I was in St. Paul at the NHL entry draft amidst all of the Ryan Smyth trade talk, and everyone was excited about it, no matter what team they were there representing or covering. TSN cameramen were telling me how wonderful they felt the move would be for Edmonton. The heart of the matter seemed to be at what cost.

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,
First and foremost, it’s a love story. It always was with Ryan Smyth.
“I didn’t ever want to leave in the first place,” said the repatriated Edmonton Oiler.
“I feel like Edmonton is home.”
Finally it became official Sunday. Captain Canada is coming home.
“We wanted to come back to Canada. Our kids are starting out in school. Two of our three kids were born in Edmonton.”
That’s it. No seriously ill parents or grandparents. The end of the big homesick.

Smyth Officially An Oiler

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Colin Fraser and a seventh-round draft choice in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for left wing Ryan Smyth, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.
Fraser, 26, played in 67 games this past season with the Oilers. He recorded five points (3-2=5) and 60 penalty minutes. It was his first season in Edmonton after spending the previous four campaigns with Chicago, including the 2009-10 season when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup and Fraser recorded career-highs in goals (seven), assists (12) and points (19).
A 6-1, 193-pound native of Sicamous, British Columbia, Fraser has played in 224 career NHL regular season games. He has 41 points (16-25=41) and 168 penalty minutes. He has also played in five career NHL postseason contests. He was originally selected by Philadelphia in the third-round (69th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft

Ryan Smyth Rumors Continue—Updates
by Alanah McGinley on 06/24/11 at 01:25 PM ET
Comments (11)
From TSN:
Los Angeles Kings forward Ryan Smyth could be returning to Alberta, but not with the Edmonton Oilers.
According to TSN’s Gord Miller, the Calgary Flames are closing in on a deal for Smyth, who would have to waive his no-trade. The Flames would send a late round pick back to Los Angeles.
Smyth is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $4.5 million this season, although the cap hit is $6.25 million.
Yesterday, Eric Duhatscheck at the Globe & Mail quoted Kings GM Dean Lombardi on the topic of Smyth:
Lombardi confirmed he had primarily dealt with three teams, and “particularly two right now.”
“I’m not in a great position here,” continued Lombardi. “I’m trying to adapt. I’ve talked to one team a number of times and they’ve been very forthright in terms of trying to get a deal together - and I hope to have that wrapped up here in a day or two.”
Update 2:40pm: At the same TSN link above, Miller reports this deal is already done, “pending ownership approval.”

Ryan Smyth to Edmonton Not Sensible
by Alanah McGinley on 06/22/11 at 01:26 PM ET
Comments (3)
From Lyle Richardson at The Hockey News:
TSN’s Bob McKenzie broke the story on Monday evening, citing a source who claimed Smyth had told Kings management he’d prefer to return to the Oilers if a trade could be worked out.
McKenzie noted no deal was in place and it would be difficult to move Smyth, given his current contract, which will pay him $4.5 million next season, but comes with a cap hit of $6.25 million. McKenzie also suggested Oilers management would be lukewarm to the prospect of bringing back Smyth, though he would be a good mentor to the young players on the team.
Smyth subsequently denied he was seeking a trade, telling the Edmonton Journal he had no idea where this was coming from, but the Los Angeles Times and LAKingsInsider.com cited sources confirming McKenzie’s report.
Whether or not Smyth requested a trade, it doesn’t make sense for the Oilers to acquire him when he’s still carrying a hefty cap hit, let alone the assets they’d have to part with to land him.

Report- Smyth Would Like To Return To Edmonton
by Paul on 06/20/11 at 02:58 PM ET

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
Could Ryan Smyth be returning to the Edmonton Oilers in order to finish his career with the team that selected him in the first round of the 1994 entry draft?
A deal certainly isn’t imminent and won’t necessarily be an easy transaction for either the Los Angeles Kings or Oilers to close, but sources tell TSN the 35-year-old left winger has indicated to the Kings his preference would be to play next season in Edmonton if a trade can be worked out.

Ryan Smyth Ties The Game, Uh, No He Doesn’t
by Paul on 11/23/10 at 08:15 AM ET

With 3 seconds to go in the game, it appeared Smyth tipped in the shot from the point but the referee ruled no goal, stick was above the crossbar.
I believe this is one of those instances where the on-ice officials had the best view of the play and not the review room in Toronto. If the ref had called it a good goal, I can see it standing too, since all the replays did not show enough to over rule the call on the ice.

Ryan Smyth Plays With Net Presence
by Paul on 11/04/10 at 03:56 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,
The area behind the net was Wayne Gretzky’s office, but the combat zone in front of opposing goaltenders has long been Smyth’s home. The Kings left wing routinely absorbs slashes across the hands and whacks on his back while chasing rebounds and deflections, and every scar is a badge of honor.
“That’s the way I’ve made a living. The puck’s got to end up toward the net so you might as well get your body there too,” he said. “And sometimes you have to pay a price. And in this case, I have over the years.”
After so many payments he’s approaching a great reward. Smyth will play the 999th game of his NHL career Thursday, and if all goes well, on Saturday will become the 256th NHL player to reach the 1,000-game milestone.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/13/10

Today’s three cheers (despite slim pickins, what with only two games last night and all) recognizing those who deserve a nip for their performances of a night ago:
***Cheers to Detroit’s Johan Franzen, who opened the scoring in last night’s renewal of the Avalanche/Red Wings rivalry and later notched a second goal, as the Wings earned a point in the standings, despite blowing a two-goal lead, in falling to the Avs in a shootout. Franzen now has three goals and four points on the young season for Detroit (2-0-1).

Kings Power Play Improves With The Return Of Smyth
by Paul on 01/09/10 at 05:53 PM ET

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
There might be “lies, damn lies and statistics,” but sometimes the numbers don’t lie. After Ryan Smyth suffered his upper-body injury, the Kings went 6-for-49 on the power play in their 15 games without Smyth. In the seven games since Smyth’s return, the Kings are 8-for-26 on the power play, and Smyth has four of those goals.
So while Terry Murray has said, of late, that he doesn’t attribute too much of the power-play success to any one person, it’s clear that Smyth’s impact is huge, particularly with the way Smyth parks himself in front of the net for tip-ins and rebounds. Here’s what Murray said today about Smyth’s impact on the power play, followed by Smyth’s thoughts…

Good Vibrations In LA
by Paul on 12/21/09 at 01:37 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
Ryan Smyth didn’t waive his no-trade clause to go to Pittsburgh or Chicago or Detroit for a playoff run. No, he waived it over the summer to go to the Los Angeles Kings, a team that hasn’t seen the postseason since Jason Allison, Ziggy Palffy and Adam Deadmarsh formed their top line in 2001-02.
So, no, you can’t accuse Smyth of chasing the Stanley Cup like a veteran on a mission to fulfill his dream before it’s too late.
Then again, could that be precisely what “Captain Canada” is doing in Los Angeles?
“I do really believe there is something special about the Kings,” Smyth told NHL.com. “You mention the (Drew) Doughtys and the (Anze) Kopitars—these types of players—they’re so young, but they’re so good. To be a part of it is awesome.”

If you’re an L.A. Kings fan, there are a lot of good reasons to be pleased with the trade that brings former Avalanche and Oilers left winger Ryan Smyth to California. He’s someone who every player on that roster would be smart to emulate – in all areas except for hairstyling.
That brings me to an important question: How long is Smyth’s world-renowned mullet going to last in Southern California? Don’t they have laws there punishing crimes against hair? Isn’t he going to get tired of having scripts for Joe Dirt sequels offered to him day in and day out?

Ryan talks about his decision to waive his NMC and a few other topice with Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,
Question: You talked about some of the discussion with your family. What were some of the factors you weighed?
SMYTH: “Obviously we have a beautiful home in Colorado, so we had to weigh the factors of all that stuff, and moving. Then you look at the hockey front. (The Avalanche) came to me and said they wanted to rebuild, and money was an issue, and obviously that goes hand in hand with my issue and my contract. It was mutual at the end of the day, and I have nothing but great things to say about Colorado.’‘
Question: Playing in Colorado, you’ve had a chance to get a decent look at the Kings. What are your impressions?
SMYTH: “Watching these young kids play, and to see the energy and excitement and the direction the organization is going in, there’s nothing but upside. I’m honored to be a part of it and I hope I can contribute a lot.’‘

from TSN,
The Colorado Avalanche have traded Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings.
The 33-year old posted 26 goals and 33 assists in 77 games last season.
Smyth spent most of the first 12 seasons of his career with the Oilers, but after failing to reach a contract agreement, was dealt to the New York Islanders at the trade deadline in 2007.
In that off-season he signed a five-year, $31.25 million deal with the Avalanche.

“We are pleased to be adding two quality NHL defensemen,” said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman. “Kyle and Tom are both versatile players who can contribute at both ends. They will add defensive depth to our lineup.”

How About Ryan Smyth To Vancouver?
by Paul on 03/02/09 at 12:55 PM ET
Comments (4)
from Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail,
The longer Ryan Smyth remains a Colorado Avalanche before Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline, the more plausible a case you can make for a trade to Vancouver. (Smyth has a no-trade clause, but hands up if you think “Captain Canada” would reject a back north).
Facing empty seats and a recession, Avalanche GM Francois Giguere needs to slash payroll, and Smyth is a huge ticket over the next three years: $16.5-million (all currency U.S.) with an annual cap hit of $6.25-million (read more on the Denver Post’s excellent Avs blog.
If Giguere requires pure return value for Smyth the Player, than there is no fit with the Canucks. But if Giguere just has to rid himself of Smyth the Contract, than Vancouver becomes a believable destination. (Smyth was traded from Edmonton exactly two years ago Wednesday. Since that deadline deal, the grass has not been greener.)

Smyth On The Trade Rumors
by Paul on 03/02/09 at 08:53 AM ET

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
...another trading deadline is approaching — it’s on Wednesday — and Smyth’s name has been tossed out amid indications general manager Francois Giguere at least got the word out that he would at least listen to offers for Smyth. But Smyth has a no-trade clause in his contract, and Sunday he again said neither he not his agent, Don Meehan, had been asked about waiving it.
“It’s just rumors,” Smyth said. “That’s what happens this time of year. I’ve been fortunate enough to have that no-move clause in place, so right now it’s all speculation.”
He said he would be “surprised” if Giguere eventually asks him to waive the no-trade clause.

Talking Ryan Smyth

Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside of ESPN discuss the future of Ryan Smyth,
Pierre LeBrun: Smyth wasn’t too happy either when the rumors started this weekend. We exchanged text messages and he said he was “shocked.” After all, he signed his five-year deal with the thought of playing it out in Denver. It must be pointed out he’s in control with a no-movement clause and, at this point, a source tells me Avs GM Francois Giguere still hasn’t broached the subject of a possible deal with Smyth’s powerful agent Don Meehan. But given what other GMs have told me, Smyth is “possibly” available. I guess that’s a conversation that will soon take place.
Scott Burnside: Interesting dilemma for Smyth. He’s a terrific competitor and the Avs may not get anywhere near a playoff spot during the remainder of Smyth’s contract. Does he want to stay with a team that is finally paying the price for years of excess? And if he was willing to go, which team has the need, and wherewithal financially, to go after Smyth? Dallas has the need given its injuries up front, but hard to imagine the Stars taking on that kind of financial burden.

Time For Smyth To Step Up

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
The Avalanche didn’t sign Ryan Smyth to a five-year, $31.25 million contract for him to be a third-liner.
But with Colorado in position to clinch a playoff spot tonight, when the Avs face the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place, that is what Smyth has been of late — a third-liner.
“Whatever Coach wants me to play, I’ll play,” Smyth said.
With 14 goals in 53 games in a season disrupted by a broken ankle and a shoulder injury, Smyth will likely have to be far more effective — and more often revert to his trademark gritty play around the net — if Colorado has any shot of getting out of the first round of the playoffs.

Smyth was out cold but did come to and he was talking while being strapped down to a body board.

Smyth Back, But Others Lost
by Paul on 02/14/08 at 09:23 AM ET

from the Denver Post,
Despite word that Ryan Smyth will return to the Avalanche lineup tonight, Wednesday wasn’t a good day for medical news.
Workhorse defenseman Brett Clark might miss the rest of the season because of a dislocated shoulder, and Paul Stastny did not practice because of a groin injury.
Clark was the Avalanche’s minutes leader, and Stastny its leading scorer. Nothing seems to get any easier for the team already among the most banged-up in the NHL.

from All Thing Avs by Adrian Dater,
The fact is, the Avs embarrassed themselves over their latest injury news, regarding Ryan Smyth. The Avs put out the word that X-rays were negative on Smyth’s ankle. They get a sigh of relief from their fans. A day later, they said, ‘Uh, never mind, the ankle is actually broken. He’ll be out eight weeks.’

via the Denver Post,
The Avalanche again will be at the mercy of a doctor’s prognosis today, when the condition of one of Ryan Smyth’s ankles will be determined. Early indications, however, are not good.
Smyth needed help from two Avalanche teammates to get from his locker stall to another room following Monday night’s 4-3 shootout loss to Phoenix.
If Smyth is out for an extended period of time, the Avs may need to start looking for some scoring help.
added 5:13pm, The Avs have called up T.J. Hensick.
added 6:16pm, From TSN:
The Avalanche received some good news regarding forward Ryan Smyth Tuesday as X-rays on his injured ankle came back negative. He has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle and is out indefinitely.

Holmstrom Sets Up Camp In Front Of The Net

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
It’s hard to decide who is better in front of the goal crease—Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom or Colorado’s Ryan Smyth.
Both grinders make their livings in the high-traffic areas where collisions abound and tempers flare, with goalies and defencemen trying in vain to move them.
“They’re the best in the world at it,” said Detroit general manager Ken Holland.

E.J. Is Right

from E.J. Hradek of ESPN,
If you’re a hockey fan in the good ol’ USA, life can be pretty frustrating. (You already knew that, didn’t you?)
The latest example of that frustration came Tuesday night. I was eager to see Ryan Smyth’s return to Edmonton. In particular, I wanted to see the crowd reaction when he skated onto the ice as a member of the visiting Avalanche and I wanted to see the Oilers’ video tribute to their former star.
I didn’t get to see any of that.

Standing Ovation for Smyth
by Alanah McGinley on 10/23/07 at 10:28 PM ET

From the CP,
Ryan Smyth, the former Edmonton Oiler, made good on his prediction Tuesday just before he faced off for the first time against his old team since his shocking trade eight months ago.
The mullet-haired left winger, now with the Colorado Avalanche, became teary-eyed as he lined up in pre-game ceremonies, watched a one-minute video tribute of his 11 seasons with the copper and blue, and received a 30-second standing ovation from the 16,839 fans at Rexall Place.
It wasn’t a weeper to rival the saddest of sports sob stories, “Brian’s Song,” but it had its moments.
Updated 3:30am ET:
Smyth’s comments in the Denver Post:
“It was a nice tribute to me and my family by (the Oilers). It’s quite an honor to come back to the city where you started your NHL career and be recognized like I was tonight,” said Smyth, who went scoreless in the game. “The fans were great to me, and I really appreciate that.”
added 5:53am by Paul, The first 55 seconds or so of the video (below) shows the ovation Smyth received from the Oilers fans.
Update 1:41pm ET: More commentary from John MacKinnon at The Edmonton Journal.

Smyth to Return to Edmonton This Week
by Alanah McGinley on 10/21/07 at 07:33 PM ET

From Eric Duhatschek in Monday’s Globe & Mail,
As for Smyth’s return on Tuesday, which figures to be an emotional night for both him and his former team, Staios said he hoped that Edmonton fans will take into consideration his years of service when deciding how to greet him.
“He did a lot of great things for this organization,” Staios said. “The business side of things is never really appreciated by the fans.”
“Hopefully, they’ll remember what he did on the ice and in the community and can show him that respect – like they did for Jason when he came back.”

Sillinger Talks Smyth & Islanders
by Paul on 09/18/07 at 08:46 PM ET

from Newsday,
On July 1, Mike Sillinger was as disappointed as anyone in the Islanders’ organization to learn that his friend Ryan Smyth had signed with Colorado rather than accept a slightly better offer from the Isles. As one of Smyth’s partners in a British Columbia real estate development and as alternate captain, Sillinger had pushed for “Captain Canada” to become “Captain Islander.”
“Even with me, he kept everything inside,” Sillinger said. “He kept his private stuff private between him and his family and his agent. I had no idea he was going to sign with Colorado. When he did sign, he told me the Islanders were one of his teams to the very end….”

Fighting Smyth
by Paul on 09/16/07 at 07:00 AM ET

from the Denver Post,
Choosing to fight Smyth, who is playing on the top line with Joe Sakic and Andrew Brunette, appeared inexcusable, like a Broncos defensive lineman trying to beat up quarterback Jay Cutler. It also appeared that Laperriere’s fight with Love was meant to send a message that you don’t mess with high-salary, skilled forwards like Smyth.
Afterward, the players presented a different picture. Turns out that Smyth, who signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract in July, picked the fight with Love, and Laperriere only fought Love to remind Smyth that he will be handling his dirty work.
more on the Avs…
added 8:14am, The Denver Post also has a nice feauture on Steve Konowalchuk.

from Pierre Lebrun of the CP via Yahoo,
“A dream come true - playing with a future Hall of Famer and also Andrew Brunette,” Smyth told The Canadian Press from Denver. “They threw us right together from the get-go.”
“I played with him a bit on Team Canada so I know him a little bit,” Sakic said Friday. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. Right off the bat they’re trying to set the lines and get that chemistry going to get off to a good start.”
