NEW YORK (Nov. 21, 2011)—San Jose Sharks forward Ryane Clowe has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slashing Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas in NHL Game No. 284 Saturday night in Dallas, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 15:35 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

I want to talk about concussions. I always want to talk about concussions, so I’ll do it early and get it out of the way.
We know head injuries are a danger, a thorny problem, a challenge and a conundrum for refs and trainers and GMs and players and medical researchers. Getting hit in the head is bad for you. It really is that simple. But I don’t want to talk about what concussions are, I want to talk about talking about them, and about the Sharks talking about them.
Policy
I don’t know which Sharks, except for Ian White, suffered concussions last season. There were several possibilities, lots of guys out with vaguely dubbed “upper body injuries.” Usually, no one tells us if they have a concussion.

End Of Game Scrums

Ryane Clowe did receive 2 minutes for roughing for this punch, jab, shot, push on Ryan Kesler at the end of the game yesterday.
Are you okay with the call on the ice? Did Kesler embellish the punch? What’s your view on this type of play?

Clowe OK, Thornton Skates

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,
Ryane Clowe won’t miss any games after taking that puck to the throat last night, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few scary moments after he went to the bench late in the first period.
Clowe skated at practice today — as did Joe Thornton for the first time since his injury — and afterward described the shot that hit him and his trip to the Dallas hospital to make sure nothing was fractured after he continued to have trouble breathing….
Clowe said the puck struck him just to the right of his Adam’s apple.
“I tried to continue playing, but I couldn’t catch my breath and then I had trouble breathing when I was getting off,” he said. “I tried to catch my breath on the bench but I couldn’t because I was coughing and puked a little bit.”
When the area of impact started to swell a little bit, that made it even more difficult to breathe and the decision was made to send him to the hospital for further evaluation.

Clowe Signs with Sharks, 1 Year

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the team has signed left wing Ryane Clowe to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Clowe, 25, was limited to 15 games due to a knee injury he suffered in Columbus on Oct. 29. He returned to the line-up with only four games remaining in the regular season and finished with eight points (three goals, five assists).
In the 2008 playoffs, Clowe finished tied for the teams goal scoring lead (five) and his nine points was ranked second on the Sharks.

Deal Or No Deal

from David Pollak at Working the Corners,
According to the G.M., he and (Ryane) Clowe sat down and talked about the future during the big left wing’s rehab period from that serious knee injury. The conversation took place before Clowe returned to action and at that time, they shook hands on a two-year deal at a mutually agreed-upon salary.
Wilson thought the handshake settled things, but apparently not. Which, of course, raises questions about what advice Clowe may now be getting from his agent. I tried to find that out today, but the agent, Paul Cobeil, chose not to comment — because “we don’t have a deal right now.”

Sharks Close To Announcing Signings

from David Pollak at Working the Corners,
Confirming that Christian Ehrhoff has signed a new contract that will pay him $9.3 million over the next three years, including $2.75 million in the 2008-09 season. The official announcement is expected tomorrow (today)....
The Sharks like to present their re-signings in mini-packages for some reason, so it doesn’t surprise me that the team hasn’t made anything official yet. When it does become official, expect it to be packaged with a new deal for Ryane Clowe.
