from Doug Harrison at CBC Sports,
As Edmonton Oilers fans anxiously await the return of the “real” Sam Gagner, his father, Dave, sits two time zones away in his London, Ont., home confident that better days are ahead for the promising forward....
“I don’t think there’s a player that’s ever gone through stretches where things didn’t go the way they wanted,” Dave Gagner told CBCSports.ca. “As long as [Sam] continues to play the right way, things will eventually turn for him. I think he’s handling it fairly well.”
Through Nov. 13, young Sam had two assists and one goal in 16 games this season after finishing fifth in rookie scoring last year with 49 points as an 18-year-old.

from the CP via the Globe and Mail,
After exceeding expectations with the Edmonton Oilers as the youngest player in the NHL last season, Sam Gagner is struggling to find his form in his sophomore campaign.
Fifth in rookie scoring with 49 points and seventh in voting for the Calder Trophy in 2007-08 as an 18-year-old, Gagner has just two assists through 11 games this season.
While Gagner is loathe to talk about the dreaded sophomore jinx, there’s no question his start to the season has been disappointing after he set the bar so high a year ago.

from the Edmonton Sun,
On Friday they went to dinner, four friends swapping stories and comparing notes on living out a childhood dream.
Then last night, Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews faced each other in a battle showcasing the future stars of the NHL.
Gagner and Cogliano with the Edmonton Oilers, Kane and Toews with the Chicago Blackhawks.
“It’s obviously great getting a chance to play against him after playing with him all of last year,” Gagner said of facing Kane. “It’s exciting.”

Sam Gagner Likely to Stay with Oilers

From Eric Duhatschek’s Globe & Mail blog,
Officially, the Edmonton Oilers have another week or so before deciding whether to keep rookie Sam Gagner on their NHL roster. But coach Craig MacTavish implied Saturday that the decision had been mostly made already – and that there would have to be a radical reversal in fortune in the next few days for the Oilers to send Gagner back to his junior team, the London Knights. And this was before Saturday’s game against the Calgary Flames, in which Gagner scored the first goal of his NHL career, to go with the four assists he picked up in his first six games.
“There will be a point of no return and we’ve probably reached that point already,” MacTavish said. “The way he’s played and what he’s contributed so far, there’s every reason to expect him to stay here.”

Sam Gagner Sticks With Oilers

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
The Edmonton Oilers signed 18-year-old centre Sam Gagner to a three-year entry level contract today, and plan on having their first-round draft pick in the opening night lineup Thursday against the San Jose Sharks.
Gagner, whose dad Dave played over 900 NHL games, is the first Oiler first-round choice to make the team in his draft year since another centre, Jason Arnott, in 1993.
“I like the way Sam thinks the game mentally. I don’t know if there was one time in the pre-season where I had to talk to Sam when he came off the ice about where he should be (defensively),” said Oiler coach Craig MacTavish.
“You can tell he’s been well-coached by his dad. That’s invaluable.”

from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,
MacTavish believes the high end of Gagner’s offensive ability is probably much higher than Horcoff’s, and since the team needs offence, they have to give this a serious look.
“We need a dynamic scorer,” said the coach, who had no idea Gagner would be this good this fast when Edmonton drafted him last summer.
“Horc, for all his strengths, is not a 100-point guy in our minds. You need a guy who’s going to be a 90 or a point-a-game guy, at least, in that position. So we’re going to entertain thoughts of looking at somebody else there at times five-on-five.”
