Can Gordon Succeed With The Islanders

from Jim Kelley at Sports Illustrated,
It’s possible it could all work out for Gordon. Owner Charles Wang might suddenly develop some patience and Snow might forge a relationship that would allow Gordon to grow as a coach while Snow grows as a general manager....
But at the end of the day, (Scott) Gordon signed on to coach a poor hockey team that struggles to attract talent from the ownership office on down. Want proof? Just dig up that picture of just two seasons ago when Wang was surrounded by Nolan, Milbury, former GM Neil Smith and advisors like Pat LaFontaine and ask where they—and the Islanders—are now. In less time than you can say “what the heck”, only Wang remains and the Stanley Cup is not in that picture.

from Greg Logan of Newsday,
It took more than four weeks, but Islanders general manager Garth Snow finally identified the coach he hopes will become a close partner for many seasons to come. Scott Gordon, who was AHL coach of the year last season in Providence, has been named as the replacement for Ted Nolan, Newsday has learned.
added 9:21pm, via the NY Islanders,
“Scott has been one of the top up-and-coming coaches in hockey and with good reason,” said Snow. “Through his work in the minor leagues and most recently with Providence over the last eight years, he has gained an impeccable reputation. The entire Islanders organization looks forward to working with Scott.”
“Garth has given me an unbelievable opportunity to coach in the NHL with the Islanders,” said Gordon. “From my time coaching in Providence, I’ve seen firsthand the talented young players in this organization. I look at the direction and the vision for this team and see a bright future.”

Islanders Should Go With Gordon

from E.J. Hradek of ESPN,
According to a report in Newsday, Islanders GM Garth Snow has whittled down his coaching wish list to just three names: former Hurricanes/Leafs bench boss Paul Maurice, ex-Avalanche/Thrashers coach Bob Hartley and current Providence Bruins (AHL) leader Scott Gordon.
If the report is true—and Newsday’s Greg Logan does a good job covering the Isles—Snow should tap Gordon.
Yeah, I know Gordon doesn’t have any previous NHL head-coaching experience. He has spent the last five seasons working behind the bench in Providence. In that role, Gordon has been dealing with young players, trying to get them ready for the next step.
