Agent For Shea Weber Upset With Hit From Fistric
by Paul on 12/28/11 at 03:42 PM ET

from TSN,
A day after Shea Weber’s concussion was announced, the Nashville defenceman’s agent has told TSN that he is not very happy that there was no additional punishment for the player who hit him.
“It is very disappointing that Mark Fistric’s hit on Shea Weber in Dallas last Friday is not being looked at as a suspendable act,” said Jarrett Bousquet, Weber’s agent from Titan Sports Management Inc. “To me this is an illegal hit to the head and in complete violation of Rule 48. Fistric is a repeat offender and regardless of where the puck is, Fistric makes direct contact with Weber’s head resulting in a concussion.”

Weber’s Upper-Body Injury
by Paul on 12/27/11 at 02:42 PM ET
Comments (5)
Shea Weber was out with an upper-body injury last night against Detroit.
Nashville coach Barry Trotz said he should have more information on Weber’s status sometime today.
Could this hit (December 23rd) from Mark Fistric be the cause of Weber’s injury?
added 2:20pm, Trotz confirms what we thought, concussion for Weber but says he feels much better and could play this Friday at the earliest.
note: this post was posted earlier today at 9:04am, just bringing up again with new information.

Disciplinary Hearing for Weber
by Alanah McGinley on 10/21/11 at 11:25 AM ET
Comments (4)
From NHL.com:
Nashville’s Shea Weber will have a disciplinary hearing Friday afternoon following a boarding penalty assessed to the Predators defenseman for a hit on Vancouver’s Jannik Hansen during Thursday’s game.
At 5:12 of the third period, Weber was penalized for boarding Hansen, and also given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
At NBC’s ProHockeyTalk, Mike Halford adds some thoughts:
The question now is if Weber will be considered a repeat offender. In Nashville’s previous game — a 3-1 loss to Edmonton — Weber also received a two-minute boarding minor for nailing Jordan Eberle. No, Weber wouldn’t be a repeat offender in the traditional sense. Yes, he could still be classified as one.

Your Next Norris Trophy Winner
by Paul on 09/28/11 at 08:54 AM ET

from Dan Rosen and E.J. Hradek of NHL.com,
Nicklas Lidstrom has taken home the Norris Trophy seven times in his illustrious career, including last season as the 41-year-old captain of the Detroit Red Wings.
Can he do it again?
The right answer is yes, Lidstrom absolutely can, because he’s that good—but that doesn’t mean we think he’s going to.
If you buy into what we’re selling, the Norris Trophy will get some new fingerprints on it come late June, when all the hardware gets handed out at the annual NHL Awards Show:
ROSEN’S NORRIS TROPHY WINNER
Shea Weber, PredatorsWeber will earn every penny of the $7.5 million coming his way this season. Forget being just a finalist for this award—this season, he’s finally going to take home the hardware.

Too Many Top Defensemen
by Ian Gooding on 08/26/11 at 08:00 AM ET

If you think that determining who the top goalie will be for fantasy teams this season is tough, wait until you attempt to sift through the number of defensemen who have been at or near the top of the scoring race the past couple seasons. I attempted to narrow down this list to five defensemen, but I had waaaay too difficult a time with that. Plus I’d be subjecting myself to far too much criticism from the masses! (By the way, I love the comments… keep ‘em coming.)

An Arbitrator Actually Made A Decision
by Paul on 08/14/11 at 07:01 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Finally, an arbitrator who did more than split the difference between a club’s submission and the player’s. Finally, an arbitrator who did more than color by numbers upon reaching his decision.
Michel Picher, the arbitrator who heard the case of the Predators vs. Shea Weber, did all that in awarding Nashville’s 25-year-old captain and Norris Trophy runner-up $7.5 million after the club came in at $4.75 million and the defenseman requested $8.5 million for 2010-11.
According to the transcript of the decision, obtained by Slap Shots, Picher dismissed the club’s attempt to use Phoenix’s Keith Yandle (“Keith Yandle simply does not present as a player who can be responsibly compared to Mr. Weber”) and Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien (“While Mr. Byfuglien, like Mr. Yandle, is an excellent player, he has logged only one season in the NHL as a defenseman”) as comparables, and instead zeroed in on the only two comparables submitted by Weber—Chicago’s Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook.

What Should Shea Weber Be Making?
by Paul on 08/03/11 at 05:48 AM ET
Comments (5)
from Josh Cooper of the Tennessean,
Despite meeting Monday and early Tuesday, the team and its captain were unable to settle on a contract before the 8 a.m. hearing in Toronto, where each side argued Weber’s worth in front of an arbitrator.
The Predators recommended an award of $4.75 million, a source close to the situation said. Weber’s agents with Titan Sports Management asked for $8.5 million. The award is for one year, as determined by Weber’s agents….
Arbitration hearings include 90-minute arguments by both sides, meaning the Predators had to present a case that Weber — a Norris Trophy runner-up, an Olympic gold medalist, a two-time All-Star and the first captain from the their own system — was worth $4.75 million for one season. Based on current salaries, that would make Weber the 26th highest-paid defenseman next season.
If you were the arbitrator, what salary would you award Weber?
added 6:59am, from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,
The Predators, in a lot of ways, are a model organization. They get the most out of their money with great coaching and development. But there is a limit. Nine of Weber’s similarly aged (or younger) teammates on the gold medal-winning Olympic team have a Stanley Cup ring. That’s not lost on him.
Even with last year’s historic playoff success, Nashville was 10 wins away from the ultimate victory.
Weber’s said several times he wants to stay and will get a deal done. But people who are much smarter than I am say this indicates otherwise. It’s almost like he’s putting them on notice: a “show me now” message.

From Elliotte Friedman of CBC via Twitter:
—Shea Weber requested 1-yr deal. He submitted $8M, team $4.75. Remember: this is not like MLB, where arbitrator must pick one or other.
—I don’t believe for a second the contract negotiations between the two are anywhere near $4.75. Betting is team knew Weber would ask high…

Nashville knows it can keep Weber for the next two seasons. But if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal now, they may be best off to bite the bullet and move him for assets that are a better fit for a franchise that, even in a salary cap world, cannot spend with the big boys.

Weber Contract Talks In Stalemate Mode
by Paul on 07/20/11 at 06:29 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Josh Cooper of the Tennessean,
With an arbitration date set for Aug. 2, there’s still time for the Nashville Predators and Shea Weber to come to contract terms. It just doesn’t seem like it will be this week.
“We’ve had long talks; we seem to be coming to a bit of a stalemate. We still have time to work before the system kicks in,” Weber’s agent, Jarrett Bousquet said. “Shea would like to be a Predator. He enjoys playing there with a team that’s on the cusp of doing something great.”
The Predators filed for arbitration with Weber in mid-June in order to give themselves more time to negotiate a deal with their captain. Should the Predators and Weber go to arbitration, he would decide whether an arbitrator would award him a one- or two-year deal. At the conclusion of such a deal, Weber would be an unrestricted free agent.
On Nashville’s exit day, Weber said that he wanted to remain a Predator, and publicly, that has not changed.
“(A deal) is going to get done,” Weber said in May before he departed Nashville for the summer.

Would You Make This Call In Overtime?
by Paul on 05/04/11 at 07:06 AM ET

from Josh Cooper of The Tennessean,
“I had one hand on my stick and he grabs my stick, and I got a penalty. So, I don’t know. It’s his call,” Weber said. “The rest of the game was great. I thought they reffed the game the same way for both teams. When it comes down to something like that, it’s unfortunate.”
The normally soft-spoken David Legwand sounded frustrated.
“It’s tough. Obviously that ticky-tac in overtime is kind of tough,” Legwand said. “I don’t know if the ref had to be somewhere tonight, but we had nowhere to go tonight, so it’s a tough call to take.
“Obviously Kesler is holding onto his stick and doing those types of things. Webby’s stick obviously shouldn’t be there in there in the first place, but Kesler is holding onto his stick. That’s a pretty touchy call for overtime I think.”

What Will Shea Weber Do?
by Paul on 01/25/11 at 08:18 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,
This is your sixth season with the Nashville Predators and, over that time, your team has excelled at drafting and developing players in the post-lockout NHL.
The Predators have also made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons. And this year, to the astonishment of most observers, they sit fourth in the hyper-competitive Western Conference.
That, at least, is the good news. The not-so-good news is the Preds seem to be bumping their heads against a glass ceiling. Over the span of Weber’s career, they haven’t won a playoff series, they’ve ranked in the bottom third of the NHL in payroll every season but one and they’ve been drained of an extraordinary amount of talent — including but not limited to Dan Hamhuis, Marek Zidlicky, Kimmo Timonen, Scott Hartnell, Tomas Vokoun and Alex Radulov.
So here’s the choice if you’re Weber. Do you commit to the Preds, knowing they’ll always be competitive but they might lack the resources to rise to the next level? Or do you tell the organization, “Look, I’ve given you six good seasons. I’m going to be unrestricted in another season and I’d like to win. Why don’t you move me while you can still get something for me?”

Top Shot
by Paul on 11/16/10 at 09:22 AM ET
Comments (3)
from Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post,
As a clinician and a professor of biomechanics who has worked with golfers and baseball players, Dr. Kevin Robinson was eager to apply science to a growing hockey legend. And that interest only grew after watching Shea Weber step into his first few slap shots after a recent practice.
It is a shot that ripped through an Olympic hockey net this year, leaving behind what one news agency described as “scorch marks” on the mesh. It moves with the ferocity that has reportedly broken bones in no fewer than four teammates while elevating Weber, a first-year captain of the Nashville Predators, into an object of childhood wonder.
“With that guy on skates,” Robinson said, “I was a dwarf.”
Robinson, who teaches at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., analyzed Weber’s shot last month with help from a digital camera and a computer program. He asked the 6-foot-4, 234-pound defenceman to take about a dozen shots in open ice, and asked the same of Predators teammates Jordin Tootoo and Cody Franson for the sake of comparison.

Talking Shea Weber Contract
by Paul on 10/09/10 at 08:00 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
I am told contracts talks with Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber will soon begin in earnest. The Preds did communicate with Weber’s agent, veteran Don Meehan from Newport Sports, last month in terms of expressing their vision for the franchise and what an important part Weber is in that vision. The team showed that by making him captain in the offseason, too.
Talk about the most important set of contract talks in franchise history. Weber, a stud blueliner, will be a restricted free agent July 1, only one year away from being eligible for unrestricted free agency.
There are three clear scenarios here:
1. He signs an extension and life is good in Music City.
2. He only does a one-year deal to bridge himself to his UFA year and he can do this by going to salary arbitration next summer.
3. The Preds get nervous they can’t sign him to a long-term extension and put him on the trade block over the summer.

Shea Weber Talks About Wearing The ‘C’ In Nashville

via the bclocalnews, “Obviously its a huge honour,” said Weber. “I have played under some great captains in Nashville who have done a lot of great things and hopefully that helps me along the way. We have a good goup of guys in Nashville, so it will be an easy job.”
As for any pressure the new title may bring, Weber says it isn’t even a thought for him.
“I am not going to change the way I play at all, I am going to play the same. So many guys could be captain because there are such good leaders on the team. They are going to make it easy on me and will be helping out.”

Two Reasons For Giving Weber The ‘C’
by Paul on 07/09/10 at 12:23 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Naming Shea Weber captain was an obvious move by the Nashville Predators; but from this vantage point, it was also a very strategic one.
Weber is entering the final season of a three-year contract that pays him $4.5 million annually, and the Preds hope it won’t be his last in Music City.
So giving the star defenseman the “C” is a way for the franchise to give Weber their biggest possible endorsement.
“I don’t think we can give any stronger message than that,” Preds GM David Poile told ESPN.com. “And it’s certainly our intention to sit down with his representatives, probably closer to training camp, and talk about the future. I think our relationship has been good and this was just the right thing to do for our organization.”

from NHL.com,
There’s a new captain in Nashville, as talented young defenseman Shea Weber will wear the “C” on his jersey this coming season, the Predators announced Thursday night.
Weber, 24, led Nashville defensemen in scoring and finished sixth overall on the team with 16 goals and 43 points. He was also a valuable member of the Canadian Olympic Team that won the gold medal in the Vancouver Olympics.
“In addition to being one of the top young defenseman in the League today, Shea is a natural leader, and we are confident he has the respect of his teammates, opponents, the Predators organization and its fans,” Nashville GM David Poile said. “He becomes the first Predators draft pick to be named captain, and has been part of the culture and belief system we have worked hard to create.”

Nashville, Tenn. (July 8, 2010) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that defenseman Shea Weber has been named the fifth captain in franchise history. He is the first Predators draftee to receive the honor.

from Greg Wyshynksi of Yahoo,
Shea Weber has never missed playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
That’s either an indication of the all-star defenseman’s relative inexperience at the NHL level, or a reminder that the Nashville Predators’ consistency as a franchise is vastly underappreciated.
“Each year is a like an experience you can draw from, and I think everyone’s comfortable about the position we’re in,” said Weber, one day after his team rallied for an emotional 4-3 win at the Detroit Red Wings, moving into seventh place in the Western Conference with 84 points.
“The fate is really in our hands. As long as we do our job, we’re going to get into the playoffs.”

from John Glennon of the Tennessean,
When Shea Weber hammered home 10 goals in the first 20 games of the season, he became the first NHL defenseman to do so in more than two decades.
The problem was that those numbers drew the attention of opponents and media around the league, which were two of the bigger reasons Weber’s goal production stalled over the next few months.
Rival coaches concentrated their efforts on finding ways to stop Weber’s feared one-timer, and journalists immediately turned him into a trendy pick for the next Norris Trophy winner.

Weber At The Top Of His Game

from John Glennon of the Tennessean,
After an injury-marred season in 2007-08 slowed his progress and raised questions about his potential, the big blueliner is delivering like never before.
(Shea) Weber’s combination of powerful slap shots and punishing hits mean he is likely to become the first Predators draft pick to earn a spot in the NHL All-Star game.
And if Weber keeps up the pace he set in the first quarter of the season, he’ll be a serious candidate for the Norris Trophy, given to the league’s best defenseman.
“Right now he’s the total package,’’ said Versus broadcaster John Forslund, who saw Weber in person the past two games.
“His whole game seems to be in place right now, and he seems to be the kind of guy you want to build around for years to come. This kid could really be a monster player — a really physical guy that can also play offensively.’‘

Facing high expectations again this season, (Shea) Weber has rocketed out of the gate with three goals and five assists in Nashville’s first seven games, tying J.P. Dumont for the team lead in points and ranking second among all NHL defensemen in scoring.
The performance has inspired teammate Jason Arnott to slap an all-star label on the 23-year-old Canadian, and experts around the league see the same potential. Although Weber may not rank with elite defensemen such as Nicklas Lidstrom, he doesn’t appear too far from it.
“I don’t think there’s anyone in hockey that doubts his potential anymore,” said Mike Brophy, hockey analyst for Rogers Sportsnet. “He is a force. He has arrived as a bona-fide top-end defenseman.”

Nashville’s Weber Flies Under the Radar
by Alanah McGinley on 12/07/07 at 03:44 PM ET

From Ryan Dixon at THN,
Trotz acknowledges Weber and his former world juniors teammate, Dion Phaneuf, share many attributes. But the coach feels there’s another comparison that’s more appropriate when describing Weber’s game.
“He (reminds me) of a young Rob Blake,” Trotz said. “He’s going to be real strong, he can shoot the puck, he can play offensively and he can step up defensively.”
His championship-laden path to the NHL ensured Weber would receive a healthy amount of recognition. But the 49th pick from the stellar 2003 draft class doesn’t mind one bit playing for a team that, despite sporting mustard uniforms, can often fly under the radar.
“That doesn’t matter to me,” Weber said. “My teammates know what I can do, I know what they can do for me. That exposure just is not that big of a deal to me. If someone notices, they do. If not, just keep paying attention to the little things.”
