Following Sid

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Sidney Crosby pauses as he walks down the hallway of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He hears the happy cries of a boy in one of the rooms just visited, so he stops, retraces his steps and disappears behind a curtain in the room.

“Hat fit OK, buddy?” Crosby asks the boy, who can’t speak.

A behind-the-scenes look at Sidney Crosby during a recent visit to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

There are more excited noises.

The Cost Of Losing Crosby

from Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette,

The Penguins now stand No. 2 overall in the East, seven points behind Ottawa, 2-0 losers to Tampa Bay last night - but for how long?

You don’t lose a player like Crosby without paying the price, just as the Senators are learning now that Dany Heatley is sidelined with a long-term injury.

The best Pittsburgh can hope for is that Crosby won’t be sidelined too long. The extent of the injury won’t be known for several days, but normally it’s measured in terms of weeks and even months - but you don’t need an MRI reading to understand how much Crosby is going to be missed.

He is the NHL’s golden boy. He is everything that is good about this game, but the Penguins aren’t the only losers. He sells tickets wherever the game is played, so teams in double-digit numbers are losers. Major sponsors of the game are losers.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

From the CP,

BIGGEST SURPRISES

ART ROSS: When Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby picked up his first Art Ross Trophy last season it was widely believed that it would be the first of many consecutive NHL scoring championships for the 20-year-old superstar. And that’s not to say he won’t end up winning it again this season, because he wasn’t that far away when the league hit its official halfway point over the weekend.

But kudos to Tampa Bay Lightning centre Vincent Lecavalier, who led the league in points for much of the first half. He’s en route to a career season and has sparked some healthy debate about whether he, not Crosby, is the top player in the game right now.

Sidney Crosby Conference Call Transcript

On Tuesday, January 1st, at 1 p.m. ET, Sidney will lead the Penguins onto the ice at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, where they will take on the hometown Sabres in the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic.

Sidney leads the Penguins and is tied for second in overall NHL scoring with 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points in 37 games played. The Penguins will host the Sabres at Mellon Arena tomorrow in the first of the back-to-back encounters that will culminate with Tuesday’s outdoor game.

Q. How often have you actually skated outdoors when you were growing up in Nova Scotia?

SIDNEY CROSBY: A lot. I mean, probably not as much as other kids in Ontario and Quebec. Our weather wasn’t always consistently cold. But I’ve certainly done it enough. Always had fun doing it. Certainly looking forward to this time.

Secondary Sid

From Empty Netters at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

According to James Mirtle, Crosby isn’t even anywhere near the league leaders in secondary assists.

So while there are plenty valid complaints of Crosby’s game (he tends to go down a little too easily sometimes in order to draw penalties in our book), ripping him for loading up on secondary assists in order to bulk up his points totals is stupid and inaccurate.

Sid Is Sid

from George Johnson at ESPN,

Nobody’s the next anybody,” Gretzky had contended last week on the night his Phoenix Coyotes visited the Igloo in Pittsburgh. “Sidney’s Sidney. Wayne’s Wayne. Mario’s Mario. And that should be good enough. Comparing is part of the fun of sports. I understand that. I do it myself. But I don’t know how relevant it is.”

At the moment, not very.

Crosby only needs four Stanley Cups, eight more Hart Trophies, nine more miniature Art Ross statuettes, three Canada Cups (or the equivalent of), five Lady Byng Trophies, 17 more All-Star Game appearances and nearly 2,600 more points to catch up to Gretzky. Come back in a decade or so and we’ll talk discuss the matter further.

Crosby Named Canada’s “Outstanding Athlete”

From the CP via TSN,

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is the winner of the Lou Marsh Award.

The honour, decided by a panel of sports editors and broadcasters, is given annually to Canada’s outstanding athlete by the Toronto Star.  Other finalists in a close vote were Steve Nash, Erik Guay, Adam van Koeverden and Steve Molitor.

The Lou Marsh Award is named after a former Toronto Star sports editor.

Vinny or Sid?

From Pierre LeBrun at Sportsnet.ca,

Crosby will definitely be “The Man” in the NHL for the next 15 years and deservedly so. But are people overlooking what Lecavalier is doing for the Tampa Bay Lightning right now?

“He is the best player in the league; I don’t think there’s any question about that,” Lightning GM Jay Feaster said on the phone to Sportsnet.ca from Tampa on Monday. “I thought he was the best player in the league last year. I think he’s the most complete two-way player in the game today.”

Head-To-Head

from the Vancouver Province,

Forget the game, it was a head-to-head that people will be talking about for days, maybe years.

It was two of the best players in hockey, Vancouver’s stalwart netminder against Pittsburgh’s wunderkind forward in two head-to-head battles.

With the spotlight all to themselves, it was Sidney Crosby versus Roberto Luongo in overtime. And then again in a shootout.

continued

I stayed up late last night and caught the whole game and I must say, one of the better games of the year.

Did anyone else catch the stare-down Luongo gave Crosby after stopping his shootout attempt?  Watch for yourself (game highlights)...

The Old NHL Creeping Back

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,

Crosby, it seems, has already provided some enduring moments in his short career, but when you watch the highlights these days, it’s other images which stand out. He’s trying to stickhandle through four defenders on the way to the net. Or he’s carrying a couple of backcheckers to the goalie. Or he’s operating in spaces tighter and more congested than the Tokyo subway during rush hour.

True, he still produces numbers. But the new NHL promised a game in which Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin and so many others could flourish.

Right now their going back on their word and that’s a problem because there’s a lot more than Crosby’s point totals at stake here

If Crosby Is Gretzky, Malkin Is Messier

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

“I think he does fly under the radar,” said Penguins general manager Ray Shero. “Sid’s the one who has to do all the press conferences. Yeah, we’re pretty fortunate to have two guys like them.”

Malkin is a massive man, just like Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks. But he’s faster. He’s also a better shooter, but not as a silky smooth a set-up man as Jumbo Joe, but still very clever.

“Very creative. He could make plays in a phone booth,” said Penguins winger Gary Roberts.

“Gino (Malkin) doesn’t get as much attention as Sid,” said former Oilers forward Petr Sykora, his linemate. “But on any other team he’d be the guy.”

Here Comes Crosby

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

“Who would have thought it would be his third year in the league before he went to Western Canada? It would have been special the first year. But this makes it extra special, especially for Sid because he is so respectful of the game and the traditions.”

From the minute Crosby lands here, he’ll be an event.

First he’ll proceed to a special press conference at the team hotel this afternoon. He’ll also have special pre-game and post-game press conferences tomorrow as well.

It’ll be the same drill in Calgary and Vancouver minus the hotel press conference to launch the closest thing there is to a royal visit in hockey in the new millennium.

Crosby Heads West

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,

Crosby will likely be climbing the walls by the time his trip to Western Canada concludes. His passion runs high for playing games in Canada, but his time away from the rink is spent keeping a low profile. In other words, Crosby won’t be found looking for a postgame pint on Electric Avenue in Calgary.

“Probably a little busier, more interviews,” the reigning NHL MVP said when asked about the difference between playing in Canada and the United States.

We Want Sid

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

How well has that scheduling format been received?

Consider that one week from now, the NHL’s reigning most valuable player, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, will play in Western Canada for the first time in his career. Nearly 200 games into his professional life, Crosby will swing through Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, starting on Dec. 5, giving fans there a chance to see him in person for the first time since he set foot in the league.

Naturally, interest in seeing Crosby play is far outstripping the available ticket supply.

Pens Just Need To Make Plays

from Darren Eliot at Sports Illustrated,

I asked Crosby about the team’s rather uneven start, postulating that maybe the young core group overlooked how well teams would prepare for them after the Penguins’ successful 2006-07 campaign. He replied, “I don’t think that’s it. We went through it last year when there was a lot of attention paid to us. We are a young group and we’re gaining experience all the time. We’ve been playing good hockey lately and hopefully we can start getting some results.”

They have been losing a lot of close games, which is disconcerting in that they excelled at winning them during the second half of last season. “The difference is in making plays” Crosby offered. “Whether it is a pass, a hit, blocked shot or save, we need to make plays at the right time. We’re starting to do that more consistently.”

Crosby Always Working

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

At 9:03 yesterday morning, with the players’ parking area at Mellon Arena nearly empty and his teammates possibly still home in bed, Sidney Crosby walked into the West Igloo Lounge and greeted about a dozen people.

He was sized up by two clothes stylists and shown some black duds hung on a rack and placed on tables.

This was no indulgent personal shopping spree for the popular Penguins captain. Crosby arrived for work early to devote more than an hour to ESPN The Magazine, which is doing photo shoots with several top-caliber athletes across the country in advance—well in advance—of its 10th anniversary issue in March.

Dependant On

from Empty Netters,

It seems like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are the only ones scoring points for the Penguins these days. That’s partially true. Through Monday’s games, Crosby and Malkin are the only players on the same team to each contribute at least 17 percent of their team’s offense. In other words, they probably could use some help from some other players:

In their first visits to Denver, the Prodigy Boys scored two goals.

Each. Almost 28 years and 1.8 miles apart.

Sidney Crosby scored two goals in the first period last night at The Can.

Tidy effort.

But Wayne Gretzky scored two goals and added an assist last millennium at Big Mac.

Score two for the local teams, though.

Yoda Would Like to Order a Crosby

From Jim Souhan at the Star-Tribune,

With a French-Canadian lilt that transforms Marian Gaborik into “Mary-Ann,” and the ability to invert sentences like Yoda, Lemaire offers insights and hockey philosophy in a soft-spoken tone that makes listeners lean forward in anticipation.

Tuesday morning, Lemaire raved about Penguins phenom and Shattuck-St. Mary’s product Sidney Crosby. Tuesday night, Lemaire watched Crosby become the third opponent ever to score four points at Xcel Energy Center, in Pittsburgh’s 4-2 victory.

Lemaire praised Wes Walz’s checking line for its defense on Crosby—even though Crosby’s line produced nine points.

The performance left Lemaire feeling covetous. “I’d love to have one on our club,” he said of Crosby, “if they make any more.”

Crosby’s “Wild Fever”

From Michael Russo at the Star-Tribune,

When “Sid the Kid” really was a kid, or more accurately a hotshot teenager burning out red goal lights for fun at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minn., Crosby, like thousands of Minnesotans, got caught up in Wild Fever. It was 2003, and the Wild was in the midst of its Cinderella run to the Western Conference finals. Crosby, a native of Nova Scotia, was 15 years old attending the Minnesota boarding school/hockey haven, and he spent many nights cheering on the Wild down at 7th and Kellogg.

“When Minnesota made the run there, I was lucky enough to see all the playoff games and go to games as a fan,” Crosby said during a telephone interview. “I went to five or 10 games during the year, too, and every game was sold out. Even for a regular-season game, the atmosphere there is pretty amazing.

“But in the playoffs, especially, it was a fun place to be. I remember thinking, ‘Boy, this would be a cool place to play,’ so it’s kind of fun that I’m going to have a chance to finally play there.”

AO vs. Crosby

from ESPN(sorry, my fault) NHL.com,

In this week’s Head-To-Head, NHL.com’s Evan Grossman and Adam Kimelman debate which superstar is the best all-around player, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin or Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby.

It’s Ovechkin, no contest!
By Evan Grossman | NHL.com Staff Writer

Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky are compared to each other at each and every opportunity. But here’s one you probably haven’t heard before: They are both not the best players of their respective generations.
No disrespect to either guy, but there’s something you people need to wrap your minds around. Gretzky, despite his total rewriting of the record book, was not as good as Mario Lemieux was—just like Crosby, despite his trophy-case first two years in the NHL, is not as good as Alexander Ovechkin….

Sid the Kid is The Man!

By Adam Kimelman | NHL.com Staff Writer

What’s the old saying? Don’t believe the hype?

Take a look at Sidney Crosby. It’s not hype; it’s gospel truth. “Sid the Kid” can’t buy a beer yet, but he’s got a chance to sip something out of that big silver mug the NHL gives away each June….

Sid’s Back

from Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star,

The record will show that Sidney Crosby came in to last night’s game against Toronto in a 98-way tie for 147th place in the league scoring race.

Mathematical incompetence and late game scores from out west prevent us from formally updating the goal table.

But the 20-year-old left town having broken his ‘07-08 cherry – twice, for good measure, including the game winner – and all’s right again in Sid World.

About two hours after Myers dropped puck in the ceremonial opening faceoff between Crosby and Mats Sundin, Sid The Kid drove the final dagger into Austin Powers’ beloved blue-and-white by tapping home a loose puck for the winning goal in a wild 6-4 Penguins victory.

“He’s a pretty big fan, isn’t he?” Crosby said of Myers, a long-time crazed Leafs supporter.

Sidney Crosby Conference Call Transcript

The Pittsburgh Penguins own Sidney Crosby participated in an NHL teleconference today. Here are the Q&A’s from the conversation:

Q.  Could you comment on the feelings of the prospect of playing your first regular season game as captain of your team on Friday.

SIDNEY CROSBY:  I’m looking forward to it.  I mean, obviously it’s an honor to be a captain.  But playing my first one as captain, I mean, it doesn’t really feel that much different.  Like I said, it was an honor, and it still is an honor.  But I don’t think my focus or mindset really changes any different than it would be last year or the year before.

Q.  You’re a spirited player, play the game with a lot of emotion.  Do you think that will change as captain or will you maybe assert yourself more than you do now?

How Good Can Crosby Be?

from Scott Morrison at MACLEANS,

As a result of both his and the team’s success this past season, the dynamic has changed. Crosby has shown what his hard work, determination, feistiness and immense skill can do.The team also climbed to another level, thus the expectations for both grow, knowing the expectations for the team can’t be fulfilled without The Kid meeting his.

“It doesn’t really feel a whole lot different,” he says of the pressure. “I think I put so much pressure on myself every year to perform that whether I had a good year or bad year last year I’ve learned to erase that season no matter how it went.We want to win, obviously. It’s a lot easier said than done, but like I said, just because we made the playoffs doesn’t mean it’s a gimme this year….”

Crosby Has Sore Groin

from the CP via TSN,

Pittsburgh Penguins star forward Sidney Crosby left practice Monday with a sore groin.

“I felt it a bit,” Crosby said. “It was just gradual as the practice wore on. I did not have as much jump as I thought I should have had.”

Crosby said his groin injury is “not near” the severity of the one that caused him to miss three games last November. Pittsburgh lost all three games when he was out.

Pens Look At Crosby For PK

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

Though just 20, he has been hockey’s top ambassador for some time. He was the NHL’s scoring champion and MVP last season and was named the Penguins’ team captain in the offseason.

Now he could add the final facet to his on-ice role. Already the Penguins’ top-line center, quarterback of the power play and top-three shootout participant, Crosby will be given a chance earn a spot killing penalties.

“We need to try to add more people,” Therrien said. “There’s [Jarkko] Ruutu, who has a little bit of experience with the way we play. And we’re talking about a Crosby. We’re talking about [an Evgeni] Malkin. We’re talking about [an Erik] Christensen.”

Last year’s surprise Penguins finished tied for third overall in the Eastern Conference with 105 points, but were bumped from the playoffs in the first round by the team they tied with, the Ottawa Senators.  And Crosby, who won MVP honours after leading the league with 120 points, wants both himself and the team to do even better this season.

The Next Outdoor Game

From Eric Duhatchek at the Globe & Mail,

This time around, the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Buffalo Sabres and that too represents an intriguing match-up - although with a 1 p.m. Eastern starting time, it is hard to imagine them fitting in what could be a great legends game beforehand, what with Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey available on the Penguins’ side and a reunited French Connection leading the way for Buffalo.
