Gagne Feeling No Concussion Symptoms

Simon Gagne has a few words of encouragement for Flyers fans that have seen R.J. Umberger, Jason Smith and Sami Kapanen leave Philadelphia to play elsewhere next season.
“The way I look at it, I might be the free agent the Flyers signed this year,” Gagne said. “I wasn’t a big part of the team last year and I want to be a big part this season.”
Gagne said the concussion symptoms that kept him out of all but 25 games last season are completely gone, thanks to an innovative injection therapy called prolotherapy.

Gagne Done For The Year

Flyers winger Simon Gagne is finished for the regular season and the playoffs.
That is the advice of concussion specialist James Kelly, who examined Gagne today in Denver.
The Flyers’ left wing has suffered three concussions in five months. General manager Paul Holmgren expressed “disappointment” but said the club would agree to shut Gagne down.

Q: Is this a new concussion or an extension of the old concussions?
SG: “That’s a good question. The only thing I can say right now is that I don’t think it is that bad. I know the symptoms were definitely worse the last time. Hopefully I will feel better very soon. The doctor said I could feel very good in the next couple of days. I just have to take it one day at a time and see what happens.”Q: What is the outlook?
SG: “Like I said, right now it is one day at a time. It could be a couple of days, it could be a week or it could be longer. There is no timeframe on what is going on right now.”

Gagne Suffers Mild Concussion

Philadelphia Flyers left wing Simon Gagne missed the final two periods of Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins with a mild concussion.
“After further consultation, Simon Gagne’s injury will be listed as a mild concussion,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “Simon will be re-evaluated [Monday] morning.”

Adding Gagne Improves Flyers

Again, while it is fun to speculate about Forsberg, in Gagne, the Flyers are already getting an All-Star impact player for the stretch run - one who is only going to get better and better as he works his way back into full condition.
“I think I’m in pretty good shape, but I want to get back to game shape, skillwise, get the legs back and all the quickness I had before,” Gagne said.
The Flyers are now 10-3-1 with Gagne in the lineup, 14-12-2 without.

Flyers Getting Healthy

Simon Gagne (concussion), Jason Smith (leg injury), Sami Kapanen (facial lacerations) and Scottie Upshall (sprained ankle) all skated with their teammates on Wednesday at practice. If this were a football injury update, Gagne and Kapanen would be on the probable side, while Smith and Upshall would be listed as questionable.
Of course, the big news is that Gagne, who has missed the last 26 games, will get back into game action after the long layoff.
“I’ll be nervous,” said the two-time 40-goal scorer. “I was a little bit nervous coming in for practice today. I felt good again on the ice and I’m looking forward to playing in New York.”

Gagne On His Way Back

Simon Gagne’s long road back from the worst concussion of his career appears to be just a week away, possibly sooner.
Sidelined for the past 13 games and for 17 of the Flyers’ last 19, Gagne is now skating without headaches, but there remains some pressure in the back of his head and in his neck.
“Physically, on the ice, I felt very good and that’s a great thing,” Gagne said Sunday. “It’s a step forward to where I want to go. Hopefully, I’ll keep going like that for the next couple days.”

Gagne Still Not Ready For Return

When Simon Gagne went out with a concussion on Nov. 7, there was a feeling that he could miss up to a month.
But now, as the Flyers are nearly at the end of the month, the likelihood is that he might take all of December to get healthy….
While this is some indication of progress, it is not a sign that he will return soon. Even after he is able to start skating and work back into practicing with the team, he will need a significant length of time at full practice to get back into game condition, as well as make sure the concussion has healed.
He can’t even say when that might be right now.

Gagne’s Concussion Issues

It took two bouts of dizziness and other symptoms for the determination to be made Wednesday that Gagne sustained at least one concussion, if not two.
“First of all we didn’t know for sure and secondly I wasn’t aware of the repercussions,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “I was under the assumption ... if he’s got a mild concussion, he’s got to be out seven days. That’s not the case.”
Gagne was injured at Florida on Oct. 24 after being hit in the jaw by Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. He sat out four games, but the Flyers never said anything about a concussion. Gagne was said to be dealing with dizziness. Gagne returned to practice after being symptom-free for two days. He followed that with a morning skate the next day on Nov. 5 before dressing for that night’s game at the New York Rangers.
Gagne came through that OK, but didn’t look like himself on the ice. Two nights later, he was hit by Pittsburgh’s Gary Roberts and the symptoms came back.

Grading System Flawed When It Comes To Concussion Issues

Gagne is at fault for rushing back to the ice. The Flyers are for allowing him to do so, especially since there is growing sentiment within the medical community over whether the NAN guidelines are too lax. Two international conferences in this decade, organized by the International Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee, concluded that any multitiered grading system is flawed because it seeks to assess severity before all symptoms surface.
“First of all, it doesn’t matter how many,” Lindros said. “It’s the severity.”

Gagne Proceeds With Caution

After admitting he probably came back too soon from his first bout with concussion-like symptoms, the Flyers left wing vowed to take more time off before jumping back into NHL action with his latest woes, which include dizziness and fatigue.
When a return date might be is anyone’s guess.
This much we do know: Gagne was examined by team doctor Gary Dorshimer on Friday. While Dorshimer continues to decline to use the word “concussion” in describing Gagne’s condition, the simple matter is that it took Gagne three attempts before passing a baseline test the last time around and now says he isn’t ready to take another since once again complaining of symptoms.

Gagne Out Again

Philadelphia Flyers left winger Simon Gagne was scratched from Thursday’s game against the New Jersey Devils after complaining of dizziness stemming from a collision with Pittsburgh’s Gary Roberts.
“He went back to the hotel and he said he was a little dizzy and had a headache,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Thursday. “He was a little better this morning, but as the day went on he was a little shaky. He’ll see the doctor in the morning.”

Gagne Remains Day-to-Day for Flyers

Simon Gagne compares his health to a barfly who’s had a few too many stiff drinks.
He stops short, however, of describing what he’s feeling as any kind of lingering symptoms from a concussion.
“Nobody has really said if it’s a concussion,” Gagne said after the Flyers practiced Tuesday. “Right now, it’s more a vision problem and dizziness. I don’t think they call that a concussion.”
Gagne hasn’t played for the Philadelphia Flyers since he was knocked out of last Wednesday’s game against Florida. He has not been cleared to return to the ice.
*A “vision problem and dizziness” and they don’t figure it’s related to a concussion? Odd.
