RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Stephane Yelle on a one-year, $550,000 contract.
“Stephane is a proven winner,” said Rutherford. “He adds depth and experience to the Hurricanes at the center position, and he will contribute to the penalty kill.”

from Matt Kalman of The Bruins Blog,
If you think Boston Bruins center Stephane Yelle is smart on the ice, you should see and hear how wise he is when insults and innuendos start flying across the Bruins’ dressing room.
The 34-year-old Yelle knows just how to toss in a phrase or two and then get out of the conversation unscathed.
“He’s dry. He’s really dry. He’s always throwing his little bombs from the corner,” Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference explained to TheBruinsBlog.net about his longtime teammate this week. “We call him a giant, wooden spoon. He just likes to stir the pot and then kind of get out of there once the water’s moving around.”

Yelle A Good Fit In Boston

from Mike Loftus of the Patriot Ledger,
While in a literal sense, signing Yelle was no big deal (it’s a one-year, $750,000 contract), those who know him best fully anticipate that Yelle will prove to be a major bargain.
“He’s big on (faceoffs), always good in his own end, blocks shots, brings a lot of experience to our penalty-killers,” said winger Chuck Kobasew, who spent nearly three seasons with Yelle in Calgary. “He does a lot of things. Most go unnoticed, but to his teammates, they’re big things.”
“He does what he has to, and he does what he does well,” said defenseman Andrew Ference, another ex-Flame and close friend of Yelle’s.

Avs Could Use Yelle

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
Stephane Yelle, who remains unsigned and is out there wanting to be signed by somebody, is a guy who might not score many goals either. But he’s not going to get scored on much, and he’s a great penalty killer.
In case Giguere needs any reminding, here it is: the Avalanche’s penalty killing was AWFUL last year....
But Yelle’s teams have a funny way of always being winners, and nobody disputes his PK credentials. The fact is, the Avs have been distinctly unimpressive of addressing this woeful area so far this offseason. They seem hellbent on adding every Hanson Brother-type player they can find, but not interested in finding a guy who can, you know, win a faceoff or get the puck and clear it when one of the Hansons are in the box.
