Staios Signs With Islanders

via the New York Islanders,

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with defenseman Steve Staios.

Staios, originally in on a tryout basis for the Islanders Training Camp, has played in each of the Islanders three preseason games this month and is set to dress against the New Jersey Devils tonight at 7 p.m. at the Prudential Center.

The Hamilton, ON native has played in 936 career National Hockey League games, scoring 56 goals and 156 assists for 212 points. He has also accumulated 1,269 penalty minutes over the course of his 15-year NHL career.

Staios Waiting For A Phone Call

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

NHL teams all want to see how things shake out at training camp with their own guys before looking at an out-of-work veteran, so Staios, who finished up last year with the Calgary Flames and is in great shape after working out with fitness expert Matt Nichols in Toronto, waits and thinks of three-or five-minute atom team drills.

The Oilers, who got a third-round 2011 draft pick from Calgary for Staios (they chose Edmonton Oil Kings winger Travis Ewanyk), don’t seem interested in bringing back the veteran, so he will head elsewhere, just 64 games shy of the 1,000-game milestone.

“It doesn’t seem like the right fit on their end right now, although I would love to come back and play here. They know how I feel about this city and organization. It shows that I’m back here with my family, without a contract, living in this community where I spent 10 years (prior to his 2010 trade to Calgary),” he said. “I don’t expect because I’m here and I’m around that they should go for me. I want a team that wants me to play a role and be a big part of things.

“I think my role would differ on whatever team I’m with. I could fill a role on a young team as a mentor, playing every night, or if it was a contending team with a lot of depth, I could be in and out of the lineup.”

Anyone Need A Veteran Dman?

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Pat Morris, who represents former Oilers defenceman Steve Staios, says the 38-year-old still wants to play in the NHL this upcoming season.

“He’s been training with all the young players at Matt Nichols’ camp in Toronto. I really think Steve could help a young team like the Islanders or Colorado (Avalanche). He played 23 of the last 27 games for Calgary last season, was an even-or plus-player in 18 of those games and had eight points.”

Staios, who has kids to enrol in school, likely wouldn’t take a training camp invite, but he has been around long enough to know that teams are always on the hunt for veteran defencemen. Something could occur this week.

Walking Around In A Fog After A Concussion

from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,

Steve Staios felt like he was stuck in Groundhog Day, and every morning was a wicked New Year’s Day hangover that wouldn’t go away.

Knocked out of Edmonton’s lineup with a concussion two games into the season, he’s been trying to free himself from the cobwebs ever since.

“The first 10 days that I took off were not very good at all—I had some really rough days,” said the Oilers defenceman, who felt well enough, finally, to skate for the first time yesterday,

“I’m glad I’m past those because they were tough. Walking around in a fog, you don’t feel crisp. That hangover feeling all day.

“It was a little bit concerning at some points, but you try not to make too much of it and hope the next day was a good day.”

Staios Drawing interest

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,

Oilers GM Kevin Lowe has already come out and said he won’t be trading any of his “good players.” An admirable concept, to be sure, but if teams offer him a “better” player for one of his “good” players, Lowe would be a fool not to listen.

And it seems there is interest in at least one of his veterans. As one Western Conference GM (who spoke on condition of anonymity) told thehockeynews.com Tuesday, Edmonton blueliner Steve Staios might be an attractive alternative to a team that loses out on the upcoming Brian Campbell trade deadline sweepstakes.
