from the CP via the Sporting News,
When the horn sounded to end the game, (Pat) Stapleton instinctively picked up what would become a cherished memento.
“Why I picked the puck up I have no idea,” he said. “I had control of the puck as the game ended. I had it on my stick. I went to shoot it down the ice, then I just decided to put it in my glove. There was no plan to it.”
Asked where he keeps it, he said, “It’s been all over the place. It’s a secret.”
As for what he eventually plans to do with it, Stapleton said, “That’s a good question, I don’t have a good, clear answer for that yet. It’s taken on legs of its own. Once the mystery is over, it’s over, right?”

‘Minor Memories’ at CBC.ca:
CBCSports.ca: Where was the most memorable tournament you ever played, and why?
Esposito: Team Canada ‘72, without a doubt, because it was the unknown. We had no idea that these guys could play like they did, no idea. In fact, the Toronto Maple Leafs scouts scouted them, and they told us they couldn’t do this, couldn’t do that. I made a statement saying no wonder the Leafs are in last place, their scouts are stupid. They couldn’t pick anybody, ‘cause this was a good hockey team. I think that was the most memorable tournament for me.

From the CP via the Globe & Mail,
Viktor Kuzkin, a three-time Olympic champion, has died after a diving accident earlier this week. He was 67.
Kuzkin won gold medals with the Soviet Union teams at three Winter Olympics from 1964 to ‘72, and eight world championships.
The Moscow-born defenceman played 169 times for the USSR, scoring 18 goals, and was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Hall of Fame in 2005.
Kuzkin’s role in the famous 1972 Summit Series—in which he was captain of the Soviet squad—is noted here. And Joe Pelletier has a few more details on Kuzkin’s career.

Mystery of the Canada-Russia ‘72 Series Winning Puck
by Alanah McGinley on 10/31/07 at 05:37 PM ET

From the CP via TSN,
A freezer bag in a safe in the picturesque Kawartha Lakes region holds a puck that may or not have won hockey’s 1972 Summit Series for Canada.
Ken Vivian thinks it might be the real thing. Ron Ellis, who played in the Summit Series, calls the story far-fetched.
Decide for yourself.
continued... (*a rather strange and interesting story)
