Oshie Out After Emergency Apendectomy

Blues forward T.J. Oshie had an emergency apendectomy this morning and will be out of the lineup indefinitely, a source has told the Post-Dispatch.
Oshie went to the hospital Friday night, following the Blues’ 3-1 victory over Minnesota at Scottrade Center. He played 17 minutes, 33 seconds in the game.
The recovery time for the surgery varies from person to person. Blues goaltender Chris Mason had a similar surgery last season and missed approximately two weeks.

Oshie A Hit In St. Louis

As he’s done everywhere in his career, T.J. Oshie wasted little time becoming a major fan favorite in St. Louis. His name became a verb, fans campaigned to vote him mayor of nearby O’Fallon, Mo., and he was a landslide winner in fan voting for the most popular player on the team....
“I’ve never had the opportunity to pick a Mario Lemieux, a player who has all the physical attributes and skills to step right into the NHL and dominate a game,” Blues head scout Jarmo Kekalainen told NHL.com. “Rarely, in fact, do you find any kid who is physically ready to step into the NHL and make an impact.
“To me, we’re charged with the opportunity to identify skill, hockey sense, character and intelligence in a youngster and then calculate his future. We try to find players with the upside who can become an impact player. You might get a guy that will make your team right off the bat. But you can’t get carried away with that. If it takes four years to get him to the NHL, but he plays 12 years in the league, I’d much rather take that guy than the guy that makes it in the league the next year, plays 100 games and then vanishes.”

Oshie Named Rookie Of The Month

NEW YORK (April 2, 2009)—St. Louis center T.J. Oshie, who helped spark the Blues’ playoff surge by recording 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and a +6 rating in 14 games, has been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for March.
Oshie edged Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos (8-7--15 in 15 games), Toronto Maple Leafs center Mikhail Grabovski (5-9--14 in 13 games), New York Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo (5-8--13 in 13 games), Ottawa Senators goaltender Brian Elliott (9-3-0, 2.57 goals-against average), Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason (8-4-2, 2.46 GAA) and Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne (7-2-3, 2.53 GAA) for the award.

Oshie Never Stops Working

To date, 19 players from this year’s Traverse Tournament have played at least a game in the NHL this year. As of Monday, five of those 19 were among the top 20 rookie scorers and four were in the top 11.
Bogosian will be an absolute force; Voracek is already responsible and productive; Neal trails only Bobby Ryan in rookie goals; Clutterbuck has set an NHL record for hits in a season; Berglund is the most prolific power play threat in this year’s Calder class.
And then there’s Oshie.
During one of our tournament broadcasts St. Louis’ president of hockey operations, John Davidson, joined us for an entire period to give us an overview of the organization’s prospects.
I’ll never forget how passionate he was when describing Oshie, who was expected to make the Blues after three consistent, productive years at the University of North Dakota.
“He’s tireless,” said Davidson glowingly. “He just never stops working.”

You Can’t Run Rich Nash

Last night, after Rick Nash was steamrolled by T.J. Oshie, the smallest player on the ice was the first responder with his team trailing the Blues 3-1 early in the third period. Kris Russell, all 5-foot-10, 180 pounds of him, went after Oshie. The hit produced a wild scrum and landed Russell in the box for four minutes (double minor, roughing). Oshie went for two minutes.
The entire sequence seemed to wake up the Jackets who responded with two quick goals from Kristian Huselius and Nash to tie it. The Jackets eventually lost 4-3 in a shootout, but coach Ken Hitchcock was proud of the response on individual and collective levels.

The Blues took control in the third period, and the crowd took over the building.
“O-SHIE! O-SHIE!”
“That’s unreal,” he said. “It’s one of those things, when you’re younger, you imagine the crowd screaming your name. For it to happen my first year, it’s something else.”

[T.J.] Oshie, 21, is expected to make the opening-day roster and infuse some offensive skill on a team that finished tied for 27th in the NHL in goals last season with 205.
The Blues also announced Tuesday the signing of forward Lars Eller, the 13th overall pick in last summer’s draft. Eller will be in camp but is likely to begin next season in Peoria or in Sweden.
“This is the whole program here ... this is our future,” Blues President John Davidson said. “We need our veterans really bad next year. But the kids are going to move forward as the season goes along. It’s going to be fascinating.”
