Remove The Interim From Todd Richard’s Job Title

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Todd Richards has been named head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, the National Hockey League club announced today. Richards, who served as the club’s interim head coach over the final 41 games of the 2011-12 season, has agreed to a two-year contract through the 2013-14 season.

Richards, 45, joined the Blue Jackets as an assistant coach on June 20, 2011 and took over as interim head coach on January 9. He led the Blue Jackets to an 18-21-2 record, including a 16-14-1 mark over the final 31 games with wins in seven of its last 11 outings. Columbus also went 14-0-0 when taking a lead into the third period after dropping points in eight of its previous 17 games when leading after two periods (9-6-2).

“At the end of last season, Craig and I reviewed all aspects of the year and took a close look at the job Todd did leading our club over the final 41 games. As we analyzed available coaching candidates and individuals who might become available, it became very clear to us that he is the right person to lead our team,” said Howson. “Our team continuously improved under Todd and he has earned the opportunity to build upon the work he started.”

Blue Jackets Hire Todd Richards as Assistant Coach

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that former Minnesota Wild head coach Todd Richards has joined the club as an assistant coach.  Richards led the Wild to a 77-71-16 record from 2009-11.

“When looking at this position, I wanted someone with NHL head coaching experience who could come here and help us to do the right things and move our team forward and Todd fits that bill perfectly,” said Blue Jackets Head Coach Scott Arniel.  “I’ve coached against him numerous times and have always had great respect for him and how he prepared his teams.  Having been a part of the Minnesota, San Jose and Pittsburgh organizations the past several years, Todd brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be very valuable to me, our coaching staff and players.”

Originally posted 11:45am ET:

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher today announced Head Coach Todd Richards has been relieved of his coaching duties effective immediately.

“I would like to thank Todd for the hard work he provided to the Minnesota Wild organization the last two seasons and wish him the best in the future,” said Fletcher.

Update 2:42pm ET: From Michael Russo at the Star Tribune—

Richards’ reaction?

“Just disappointed. Just disappointed in myself, that’s all,” he said. “I needed to do a better job—simple as that.”

As veteran Andrew Brunette said Monday, it’s amazing how fast it unraveled.

“Eight weeks ago we’re talking about Todd as ‘Coach of the Year,’” Brunette said. “Things happened so fast.”
