Holmstrom Being Holmstrom

from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star,
There’s apparently just no sanctuary from abuse for Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom.
Even in the Wings dressing room, the slashes and cross checks turn into verbal jabs as Holmstrom readied himself to join a photo shoot for an upcoming story for Men’s Health Magazine. “How did you get picked for that?” queried Kirk Maltby. “They must have been looking for someone to show what not to do.”
Holmstrom merely smiles. The veteran winger is doing a lot of that lately.
The 35-year-old Swede has scored in all five game this season and leads the NHL in scoring percentage by converting half of the 10 shots he’s taken. “I should shoot more,” Holmstrom said.

From Dave Waddell via the National Post:
Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom, who was injured Wednesday when he was dumped by Pittsburgh defenceman Hal Gill, said he’s optimistic he’ll play in tonight’s Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final [...]
“Yeah, that’s how it looks like,” Holmstrom said when asked if he’ll play tonight. “It feels good.”
While opting not to discuss the nature of the injury, Holmstrom said it’s unrelated to his groin problem that caused him to miss almost all of March.

Interviews with the Red Wings

Today, some interviews with the Detroit Red Wings. Q&A’s featuring coach Mike Babcock, Tomas Holmstrom and Nicklas Lidstrom.
Q. A Franzen update? But can you also talk about what this has been like for him for him to be playing as well as he was and then have to watch.
COACH MIKE BABCOCK: Obviously it’s real difficult for him. It’s part of playoff hockey, though. Things like this happen. You know, the bottom line is you just got to overcome it. Every team gets injured.

Poor Homer

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun,
Pity Tomas Holmstrom.
How often are you going to see those three words in a row?
But really. For the second time in as many Western Conference finals, the Detroit Red Wings’ hard-headed Swede, who has made a living out of obstructing goaltenders’ vision and scoring garbage goals no longer than his hockey stick, is deserving of our sympathy. A limited amount. Certain terms and conditions may apply. See your dealer for details.

The ‘Homer’ Rule

from Chilling Out by John Glennon at the Tennessean,
If the first round of the NHL playoffs earned notoriety for the so-called “Sean Avery rule,’’ then this round of the postseason should focus on a “Tomas Holmstrom rule.’’
Specifically, here’s what it should be: Any goal scored by Holmstrom gets automatically reviewed by the NHL.

from Mlive,
Tomas Holmstrom didn’t skate and won’t play Sunday vs. Nashville due to a groin injury he suffered in practice on Friday. Holmstrom said he’ll have an ultrasound on Sunday. He said he’s concerned about it, that it’s worse than it’s felt before.
“I pulled something in the groin area,’’ Holmstrom said. “I couldn’t push away (in practice Friday). Of course I’m concerned. I had something earlier this year but it went away, but never this bad.’’

The Growth Of Homer

from the Windsor Star,
Almost immediately, coach Scotty Bowman recognized what Holmstrom’s ticket to success in the league was going to be.
“When I got over here Scotty told me never to leave the front of the net,” said Holmstrom, who has 20 goals and 36 points in 44 games. “He said. ‘Don’t even go into the corner, just stay in front.’
“I don’t mind it (playing in front); sooner or later the puck is going to come to the front of the net because that’s where everything happens.”

from George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press,
I just spoke with Wings general manager Ken Holland and he said Tomas Holmstrom won’t play Saturday at Minnesota because of an injured right knee. Holmstrom is flying back to Detroit and will have an MRI on Saturday morning....
“After the game we didn’t think it was anything significant,” Holland said. “He woke up this morning and it’s a little swollen and tender in some areas. He’s not playing tomorrow night.”

Shoot For Holmstrom’s Stick
by Paul on 11/12/07 at 09:04 PM ET

from the Detroit Free Press (Tuesday edition) via the Santa Barbara News-Press,
Now 34, Holmstrom’s saga reveals a player who is putting up career numbers on a regular basis, with 29 goals two seasons ago, 30 last season and on pace for 43 this season. Entering tonight’s game against St. Louis, Holmstrom is tied with linemate Pavel Datsyuk for second on the team in scoring with 16 points after 17 games.
The courage Holmstrom displays as he stands in the path of vulcanized rubber on a nightly basis has won him many admirers, from those who shoot at him to those who emulate him.
Nicklas Lidstrom, who almost always is on the ice at the same time as Holmstrom and his line with Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, exemplifies the former. Having Holmstrom in front of the net allows Lidstrom the freedom to miss the net on purpose at times.
‘’You can see his stick, so you try to shoot it where Homer’s stick is,’’ Lidstrom said. ‘’So sometimes you shoot it wide because you know he is going to try to get it or deflect it into the net.’’
