Give Kaberle Some Respect

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,

There, among the top 10 point producers in the league, is Kaberle, who, as of yesterday, was tied for 10th with 20 points, best among NHL defencemen.

“It’s cool,” admitted the normally understated Kaberle about seeing his name among the Ovechkins and Thorntons.

“Cool” is a very applicable term when it comes to discussing Kaberle.

On one hand, it describes his demeanour on the ice, always seemingly calm in the heat of battle.

Unfortunately, “cool” also describes the reception he sometimes gets from the demanding members of Leafs Nation.

Maybe it’s because they don’t think he shoots enough. Or is tough enough. Or is good enough in his own end. All legitimate gripes.

Burke Says Kaberle Not Moving

via Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,

Attention K-Mart shoppers, don’t bother looking for that last-second Tomas Kaberle deal.

Asked yesterday just what time today the defenceman’s trade window closes, general manager Brian Burke e-mailed: “It doesn’t matter when. We’re not moving him.”

A post-season opportunity to trade Kaberle opened in his contract when the Leafs missed the playoffs. But outside of discussions with Boston for Phil Kessel at the draft, nothing developed and Burke decided to see what Kaberle can do this year when protected by a tougher Toronto defence.

Burke’s hope to trade another defenceman for help at forward remain unfulfilled to date.

How many times did we hear from supposed experts that Kaberle was about to be traded?  It is now over, until the talks start up again near the trade deadline…

Kaberle Still A Toronto Maple Leaf

from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,

Tomas Kaberle still hesitates when answering his phone in the Czech Republic.

But the wait and worry ends Saturday when the window on the defenceman’s no-trade contract closes, with him still expected to be a Maple Leaf.

Kaberle was relieved to hear general manager Brian Burke predict again yesterday that he’ll be in the fold when training camp opens in a month.

“I’m happy to be staying a Leaf, though there are still a few days to go,” a cautious Kaberle said yesterday in a phone interview from his hometown of Kladno.

“Everyone knew what Brian said, that if he got a good deal there would be movement with me. But I’m getting ready to go to Toronto now, working out the past few weeks with (compatriot and Canadiens forward) Tomas Plekanec and ready to fly out in a few weeks and see the guys.”

Burke Not Blown Away By Kaberle Offers

via Sportsnet,

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke expects Tomas Kaberle to be in the lineup on opening night, and will be shocked if the defenceman is not.

Burke made the comments on Thursday during a press conference where former NHLer Dave Poulin was introduced as the club’s new vice-president of Hockey Operations.

“I’d have to be blown away,” Burke said in response to moving Kaberle before the season. “But that hasn’t happened and I don’t see what happening.”

TSN Rumor: Kaberle to Boston—UPDATED

A rumor from earlier today continues.  From Darren Dreger’s Twitter feed:

Kaberle to Boston? Bob McKenzie will have a video update shortly on www.tsn.ca.

added 5:32pm, via TSN,

In the latest video update from Montreal, Bob McKenzie says he would be shocked if Tomas Kaberle was not a Boston Bruin by the end of the night.

Update 5:55pm ET: From TSN --

It appears the potential trade involving the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs is at the very least on hold and quite possibly dead.

TSN reported this morning that the Bruins had offered Phil Kessel in exchange for Tomas Kaberle and Toronto’s No. 7 overall pick in today’s draft.

It was later reported that the Leafs No. 7 pick was not included in the deal and Boston was in fact adding a significant pick in the package.

It turns out there was apparently major miscommunication between the two teams. Boston did indeed believe they were getting the No. 7 pick from the Leafs but Toronto is apparently not interested in making that move.

Could Kaberle Be Moved?

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Sources tell TSN the Toronto Maple Leafs have received what the team considers to be a significant offer for defenceman Tomas Kaberle.

There are few details available, however the offer arrived unexpectedly Thursday afternoon and is believed to be from one of the teams who may have been in the hunt, trying to acquire the negotiating rights to Florida’s Jay Bouwmeester.

Kaberle = Pronger?

from Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star,

Toronto general manager Brian Burke has repeatedly said he’d have to be blown away by an offer in order to trade the smooth-skating Kaberle before Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline.

He defined that further today.

“It would be a minimum of a first-round pick, a guy that can play on our team right now and a top prospect,” said Burke in a conference call with reporters.

Burke said he wouldn’t divulge the entire details but he would be looking for a return similar to what he gave up to acquire Chris Pronger in 2006 when he was Anaheim’s GM.

Will A Team Blow Burke Away?

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

The Maple Leafs aren’t certain they want to deal veteran defenseman Tomas Kaberle, but he has agreed to waive his no-trade cluase and earlier this week provided Toronto GM Brian Burke with a list of 10 cities where he will agree to play.

According to two sources with direct knowledge of the list, Boston is among Kaberle’s 10 teams.

‘’Kaberle is not going anywhere,’’ Burke wrote by email this morning, neither confirming nor denying that Boston is on the 30-year-old defenseman’s list, ‘’unless someone blows me away.’’

Burke Talks Kaberle

from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,

Tomas Kaberle isn’t likely to go anywhere.

While Kaberle has provided the Leafs with a list of 10 teams he’d prefer to be dealt to in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause, Leafs GM Brian Burke sounds as if he’d rather keep the skilled, puck-moving defenceman....

“Two keys,” Burke wrote in an email. “One, Kaberle wants to stay. He could not be clearer. Two, (it’s) hard to believe I will get what I need to move this guy. (He’s a) quality person, great stats, good salary.

“I did not ask him to waive no-trade. (His) agent suggested looking at this vehicle because it allows him and Tomas to retain some level of control over where he goes. If we miss the playoffs, he has no control over where he goes.”

Keeping Kaberle In Toronto May Be Best For The Leafs

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Brian Burke has the list.

He knows the teams that Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle will waive his no-trade clause to go to.

Burke knows that Kaberle wants to stay in the Eastern Conference.

Burke also knows that Kaberle would prefer to stay in Toronto and failing an offer that stops Burke in his tracks, keeping Kaberle may make the most sense.

Tomas Kaberle Out With Broken Hand

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle will be out at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a broken hand.

Kaberle leads the Leafs defence in scoring this season with 30 points (four goals, 26 assists) in 49 games, but is a minus-12.

Ron Wilson Sending Messages

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

The latest to experience the sting of Leafs head coach Ron Wilson’s teaching methods were defenceman Tomas Kaberle and left winger Alexei Ponikarovsky. Wilson, unhappy with Kaberle’s play in a loss Tuesday to the San Jose Sharks, kept him on the bench for the entire first period....

Kaberle, who was not told before the game he would be benched, was on the ice for all three Coyotes goals in the third period and finished at minus-3.

“Obviously, it was hard,” Kaberle said. “I take it seriously. That’s the way it is. I have to keep my head up and get my ice time back.”

Wilson, who may order his troops to stay here for a practice today before flying back to Toronto, was not sure Kaberle got the message.

“Yeah, he obviously sent a message back,” the coach said. “He was [minus-3].”

more

added 11:43am, from Damien Cox at the Spin,

Wilson, armed with a four-year contract, has the ammunition to fight back against that lack of, in his words, “accountability,” and he’s doing it.

Truth is, he’s been dissatisified with the work of Kaberle and Kubina for weeks, the two members of the Leaf defence corps with no-trade clauses in their contracts. New GM Brian Burke is already on record as saying such clauses are “coach-killers,” and quite clearly its in the plans of the Leafs to have both players willing to waive those clauses sometime before March in order to facilitate trades elsewhere that will bring draft picks and/or players to the club....

But the gauntlet has been laid down. And Kaberle, it’s clear, is in his final weeks as a Maple Leaf.

Tomas Kaberle May Waive NTC

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

Tomas Kaberle is surveying the National Hockey League landscape, asking questions and opening his mind to the possibility of being traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

For him, that represents a whole new vision for his future. If he had done this last February, he could have been playing for the Philadelphia Flyers last night and scoring threat Jeff Carter would have lined up as a Leaf.

Love For Kaberle

from Navin Vaswani at DigitalJournal,

It’s been one hell of a ride, Tomas. I’ve enjoyed every second of it with you. As we embark on another chapter in our lives together down in Detroit tonight, all I want us to do is live for the moment, and live for today. I know everyone in the world thinks the Leafs are going to be terrible this season. Let’s prove them wrong. Screw John Tavares. Screw Victor Hedman. I mean, who knows how long we have left together? Who knows how long we have left on this earth? I won’t be cheering for the Leafs to lose. I don’t have it in me. I’ll be cheering for you, Tomas, and for the rest of the boys. Live for today. Have faith. Let’s shock the world.

Kaberle Talks Heat Up

via Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Tomas Kaberle could be on the move.

Two league executives told the Sun talks to send the Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman to the Philadelphia Flyers have intensified in the last 24 hours.

The belief is Kaberle may have been asked to waive his no movement clause and if he agrees a deal could be completed.

added 5:04pm, from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

“Tomas Kaberle is not going anywhere,’’ agent Rick Curran told TSN. ‘’He signed a contract to be a Toronto Maple Leaf and while he’s disappointed with the way things have turned out this season in Toronto, he has no intention of leaving. He’s fully committed to the Maple Leafs. That’s why he signed a long-term contract (three more seasons after this one at $4.25 million per season) and that’s why he’s not waiving his no-trade clause....”

Kaberle Represents Hope for Toronto

From Paul Hunter at the Toronto Star, Tomas Kaberle is “living proof the Leafs actually know how to choose talented players” in the draft:

On a team with a history of dubious draft selections, it is Kaberle who stands out as one of the best; a rare home run for a team that usually goes down swinging. And the good news for Toronto fans is Kaberle arrived under Fletcher’s watch in 1996.

Selected 204th that spring, Kaberle blossomed into a front-line NHL defenceman in Toronto and became a player who excelled to the point that this will be his third all-star appearance.

Kaberle Keeping It Simple

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

Kaberle admits he had trouble adjusting to the coach’s adage of keeping it simple. Once he did, things got better, although part of that was Maurice reuniting him with McCabe, his familiar partner for so many years. That move made both of them better, mainly because they’re comfortable with each other on the ice.

“We know everyone has to start with himself,” Kaberle said of efforts to improve as a team. “Then everyone looks better afterward and that’s what we did. We simplified our game in our zone and tried to play in [the opposition’s] zone. And keep it simple.

“Sometimes, the big play is not there and the simple play is just getting the puck out of the zone and keep it simple in the neutral zone.”
