Carolina Will Make A Decision On Ruutu Next Week

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today he has met with forward Tuomo Ruutu to discuss Ruutu’s future with the team, and said a decision should be reached next week.
Rutherford said Ruutu, due to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, expressed a desire to stay with the team.
“These meetings are to see where the player is at, what they think of the team, whether he likes being in the organization, those things,” Rutherford said. “Tuomo is a player we really like, and he said he likes being with the team. That’s an important first step and we had a good meeting.
“The next hurdle may be the bigger hurdle, but at least we know we’re on the same page.”

High Asking Price For Ruutu

General manager Jim Rutherford has been talking to teams about Ruutu (who is an unrestricted free agent this summer) and the asking price has been steep - a significant draft pick and a solid prospect or a top prospect alone. Ruuttu has the ability to both score goals and play a physical game, so a lot of teams have interest - including the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers amongst others.
The Rangers, for example, figure Ruutu is just the type of Top 9 forward that could play coach John Tortorella’s demanding style.
Two questions, though.
Will teams pay that price?
And more importantly, is Ruutu actually available? That will be determined this week when Rutherford decides whether to give him the ‘Tim Gleason treatment.’

***Cheers to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, for stepping up to Anaheim’s Corey Perry and earning the decisive victory in a scrap last night. He may have taken himself out of the running for the Lady Byng Trophy in this season’s very first game but taking out a bullying Perry, in this instance, was well worth it.

Two-Goal Start for Sutter, Productive Youth (and No Injuries!) All Good Signs for Carolina

He’s not the youngest player on the roster, nor would he be considered a shocking contributor after last season’s 21-goal, 40-point showing but Brandon Sutter is most certainly a key piece to any Carolina Hurricanes success this year and his two-goal performance in Thursday’s season-opening, 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild in Helsinki, Finland is an excellent early sign for a club hoping for a lot to go their way in 2010-11.
For the Hurricanes, banking on both young guns and sustained health and rejuvenation for several veterans who were hobbled last year, a player like Sutter, at 21, serving as an alternate captain and coming off of a breakthrough season a year ago, will play a major role in determining their fortune. So far, so good for Sutter, who played just six seconds less yesterday than Carolina captain Eric Staal and so far, so good for the ‘Canes, who dressed six players 25-and-under in the game and got production from Sutter (two goals), Zac Dalpe (assist) and Jamie McBain (assist), as well as sparkling reviews for 18-year-old forward Jeff Skinner from that group.

The State of Hockey in Finland

If there was ever a National team program historically greater than the sum of its parts, it would be Team Finland. Despite not having the offensive depth of many of their Elite Seven rivals, the Finnish National Team has repeatedly fared well in recent international best-on-best competition. After enduring many decades of lopsided defeats internationally at the hands of Canada, the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and longtime nemesis Sweden, the Finnish hockey program made great strides in the 1990’s, culminating with a World Championship in 1995. In addition, Finland has won more Olympic Hockey medals (1 silver, 2 bronze), than any other nation, since the introduction of NHL players to the Games in 1998.
Finland’s success can be attributed to a strong emphasis on teamwork and the fact that unlike their European rivals, hockey is indisputably the number one sport in their homeland, which has led to the implementation of adequately funded development programs and a strong domestic league in SM-liiga. More than any other European team, Finland employs a fast skating, tight forechecking, North American style of play, augmented by strong defensive zone coverage and consistently elite goaltending. The rinks in Finland have been adjusted to enhance the tight forechecking style of play, by adopting a size that is halfway between the dimensions of NHL and IIHF standards. Furthermore, in an effort to aid the National Team’s development programs, numerous goaltending schools have been created, and often led, by the country’s top puck stoppers. This has led to the emergence of many elite young goalies in the NHL, such as Tuukka Rask, Pekke Rinne, Antti Niemi and perhaps Kari Lehtonen, if he can find health and consistency in a Dallas Stars uniform.

Carolina’s Push Toward Youth is Both Promising and Perilous

The future is now in Carolina, where the old guard is out, an influx of youth is taking over and everyone is looking to put the injury-plagued woes that ruined things a season ago far, far behind them.
With the retirement of former captain Rod Brind’Amour symbolizing the changing of the guard in Raleigh, which started with Eric Staal succeeding Brind’Amour as team captain in January last season, the process of remolding the club is well underway. The 25-year-old Staal will have some veteran support in his first full year wearing the ‘C’ but Carolina’s heavy reliance on several key youngsters is a make-or-break formula for success this season. If the kids collectively respond to the challenge, the ‘Canes have enough going for them to cause trouble in the Southeast and surprise a lot of people. Some growing pains are sure to be felt, however, in such a transitional year for the franchise and immediate success probably takes a back seat to more long-term achievements.
Avoiding the injury bug has to be high on the list of priorities for a club that holds the unfortunate distinction of hitting the 300 man-games lost to injury milestone a year ago.

As the new season approaches, I’ll be making an effort to preview the Southeast Division in a slow and steady, comprehensive manner. To kick things off, I thought I’d take a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. (In other words, for example, we’ll group Dustin Byfuglien’s 2009-10 statistics with Chicago alongside his new Atlanta Thrashers teammates and their performances from last year.)
In short, we’ll look at last year’s stats with this year’s rosters, both by division as a whole and by individual teams, broken down by position… Because a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come. (Often… Not always. See: Cheechoo, Jonathan.) And, besides, I don’t know that you’ll find a list like this in too many places (at least I hope you won’t… Cause that would mean I spent too much time on all of this!)
To get things started, we’ll start tonight with the forwards.

Ruutu Calls Tucker To Apologize For The Hit

Canes forward Tuomo Ruutu said today that he has called Darcy Tucker of the Colorado Avalanche and apologized for the hit from behind that left Tucker with a concussion.
Ruutu was suspended for three games by the NHL for the hit in Friday’s game in Denver.
“It was a bad hit by me,” Ruutu said. “I wasn’t really worried about the suspension. I was worried about the guy.
“It looked pretty bad. It just happened. I think he’s doing better. I’m so sorry about what happened but everything happened so quickly.
“I wish I could get it back but I can’t.”

Ruutu received 5 minutes for boarding along with a 10 and game misconduct.

...it seems like Darcy Tucker escaped potentially catastrophic injury tonight. After being taken from the ice on a stretcher from Tuomo Ruutu’s hit from behind, eyewitnesses said later tonight that Tucker walked out of the Pepsi Center. He was on his way to the hospital for further tests, but Avs personnel told me Tucker appears to have “escaped” with a concussion and stitches to the head.
added 11:40am, According to Ben Hankinson, Ruutu receives a 3 game suspension.

Ruutu Agrees To Terms With Canes

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Tuomo Ruutu on a three-year contract. Under the terms of the deal, Ruutu will be paid $3 million in 2009-10, $4 million in 2010-11 and $4.4 million in 2011-12.

UFA-To-Be Ruutu Hopes To Stay In Carolina

Canes fans seem to appreciate Tuomo Ruutu and his sometimes rambunctious, often entertaining brand of hockey. When he controls the puck or smacks somebody into the boards at the RBC Center, there is the “R-UUUUU” rumble from the stands.
And guess what? Ruutu likes it here, too. A restricted free agent after the season, he made it clear this week that he hopes to stay with this team, in this city.
“I feel like it’s home here,” he said. “It was a big change coming from Chicago, but right away I felt like I came home.
“This season I realized it — that it’s a great place to live and to play, as well.”

Canes Sign Tuomo Ruutu

Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Tuomo Ruutu (TOO-oh-moh ROO-too) on a one-year contract. Ruutu will be paid $2.25 million during the 2008-09 season.
“We are happy he’ll be back with our team and we hope that he can stay healthy and return to the 20-goal plateau that he reached during his rookie season,” said Rutherford.

Stop Running - You’ve Been Arrested

Chicago Blackhawks forward Tuomo Ruutu was mistakenly arrested and detained briefly as a suspect in a robbery attempt in a Chicago suburb, according to authorities.
Bensenville police arrested the 24-year-old Ruutu on Wednesday because he matched the description of a robbery suspect, said Bensenville Village Manager James Johnson.
“He met the initial description,” Johnson said. “This was just an unfortunate coincidence.”
Ruutu, dressed in a black team sweat suit and black cap, told police he was out for a short jog after team practice at Edge Ice Arena, Johnson said.
