From Rhéal Séguin at the Globe & Mail,
Hockey legend Vladislav Tretiak has taken hundreds of flights over his career and witnessed many bizarre incidents on planes, but nothing like last week’s midair altercation that left a drunken Russian passenger dead.
Mr. Tretiak was fast asleep in the first-class section of an Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Toronto, on his way to the prestigious international hockey championship in Quebec City, not knowing that one of his diehard fans was determined to talk to him.
“I felt someone shaking me on my shoulder and I woke up. There was this guy standing next to me. He looked like he had been drinking. Before I realized it, somebody else was pulling him away as he screamed, ‘Tretiak, Tretiak.’ And then they just took him away,”
continued... *a strange story, and obviously very upsetting, experience for Tretiak

from the CP,
Tretiak says he’s hopeful that the NHL and European hockey federations can come to some sort of agreement on player transfers.
“I think there should be friendship between the NHL and the Russian leagues,” Tretiak said. “That is what I hope.”
Tretiak says his hope is that other Russian-born players are not denied a chance to play in North America as he was.
Sitting in Le Colisee Pepsi, where Tretiak played a handful of games, he says not playing in the NHL was his greatest regret.

Getting To Know Tretiak

from Kelly Hrudey at Behind the Mask,
Wednesday night I had the pleasure of attending an event for the Edge School for Athletes in the city of Calgary.
For two reasons I was really looking forward to the gala. The first was because one of my favourite pleasures is to listen to public speakers, and secondly, this guest speaker was the legendary goaltender Vladislav Tretiak.
All hockey fans know of Tretiak’s brilliance on the ice but very few people know much about the man, including myself.

From Allan Maki at the Globe & Mail,
Fetisov, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, was quoted on the Russiatoday website endorsing what will be called the Continental Hockey League and include teams outside of Russia.
“At the moment, the top players will continue playing in the NHL because they believe it’s the best league in the word,” Fetisov said. “But if our league gains the same status as our North American counterparts, the new Ovechkins, Kovalchuks and Datsyuks will stay here because they’ll be playing in a very competitive and financially competitive league.”
Fetisov said the new league will also stage a draft like the NHL.
“If we’re able to draft players from the various European leagues, Canadians added to our talent in Russia, we’ll definitely be a serious contender to the NHL.
