“I’ve got to tell you,” said Del Biaggio, who’d bought the Nashville Predators from Leipold in late 2007, “I lied to you.”
“What are you talking about?” Leipold asked.
Weeks later, after he returned from France, Leipold learned exactly what Del Biaggio meant, and just how far those four words had taken him.
The young, relatively unknown venture capitalist from San Jose had made one of his first confessions of guilt in what would be one of the most embarrassing recent chapters in NHL history.

In the end, it was almost anti-climax, an end to a case never destined for trial. William “Boots’’ Del Biaggio, the man who flew too close to the sun, answered with a single word Wednesday when the clerk in federal court asked how he pled. “Guilty,’’ he said.
And with that, a year’s worth of haggling was all but done. Del Biaggio’s attorney, Elliot Peters, and Assistant U.S. Atty. Tim Crudo had signed off on an agreement that could give Del Biaggio between six and eight-plus years of prison.

The legal travails of former Silicon Valley venture capitalist William “Boots” Del Biaggio — a former part-owner of the NHL’s Nashville Predators — are about to deepen.
Federal prosecutors in California have charged Del Biaggio with fraud, and the U.S. national securities regulator has slapped him with an injunction as part of a $65-million scheme to bilk a raft of small investors and several banks.
