from Phil Coffey of NHL.com,
Brian Burke wasn’t kidding.
Burke, Team USA’s General Manager for the 2010 Winter Olympics, had been forthright about his plans for the American roster, saying that it was time Team USA moved to a younger lineup and away from some of the players, now NHL greybeards, who won the 1996 World Cup and the silver medal at the 2002 Games.
Friday, he did just that, unveiling a roster that did not include past Olympians Mike Modano, Bill Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Scott Gomez, Brian Rolston and Doug Weight.

Olympic Hockey Fantasy Talk

It is not often you get fantasy tips from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail, so take advantage of it…
Here’s a little trivia for anyone preparing a fantasy pools list for the upcoming 2010 men’s Winter Olympic hockey tournament in Vancouver:
The National Hockey League has had full participation in three previous Olympics; twice, the same pair of players ran 1-2 in the scoring race. They weren’t Czechs, Canadians or Swedes either (the three countries that have won gold during that span.) Rather, it was Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu from Finland, a pair of well-known, highly respected NHL players who have a history of raising their performance levels when they don national colours.
But there’s something else you need to know while researching your Olympic picks—you can get some unexpected scoring heroes mixed in with the familiar ones.

Drunk Drivers Not Welcomed In Canada

from CTVOlympics,
Americans wanting to get into Canada to attend Olympic events may be told to turn around and go home if they’ve been convicted - or even charged - with drunk driving.
In Canada, drunk driving is considered a criminal offence, though in the United States, it’s often considered a only a misdemeanour.
Drunk driving doesn’t bar Canadians from the U.S., but it can bar Americans from getting into Canada and with thousands of Americans expected to come to Vancouver and Whistler for the Games, lawyers on both sides of the border say the potential is there for many to get an expensive shock.

Canadian hockey cheerleaders like to say this country is so overflowing with talent that it could send two teams to the Olympic tournament. That’s true, but would either win? Canada’s 12th forward may be superior to Russia’s 12th, but I’ll take Russia’s core ahead of Canada’s. We’ll see.

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
More than four years removed from the Sochi Olympic Games in 2014, the battle lines have already been drawn by one of the NHL’s biggest stars regarding NHL participation.
Two-time Hart Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin told ESPN.com during an interview here Wednesday that he will risk suspension and play for his country regardless of whether the NHL is formally involved or not.
“Nobody can say to me you can’t play for your country in the Olympic Games,” Ovechkin said.

“I don’t know any other sport that closes its door for 2½ weeks in the middle of the season. What I’d like to see is this become a Summer Olympic Games [sport]....”
-Brian Burke speaking about the Olympics as it relates to Ice Hockey. More from Burke at the Globe and Mail.
added 5:14pm, from Mick Kern of NHL Home Ice,
But whatever you do, leave the sport of hockey in the Winter Olympics. If the NHL teams and players wanna take their puck and go home, let them. We don’t need any more manufactured drama, nor does the league need to shut down its product during two weeks of the worst month of the year.
Then again, having NHL stars play in the Olympics means there’s no NHL All-Star Game that season.
Hmm, let me reconsider this.
