The Latest On Zach Parise
by Paul on 01/31/12 at 08:53 AM ET

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,
Sources say inquiring general managers are getting the word Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is not dealing unrestricted free agent-to-be Zach Parise before the NHL’s Feb. 27 trade deadline.
Instead, it is thought if the Devils do not want to re-sign Parise in June, they’ll trade his rights to a team that wants an advance shot at negotiations before he becomes free July 1.
The advance payments the Devils are receiving from the NHL do nothing to enhance the team’s attractiveness for a player preparing to sign a deal for the rest of his career.

What To Do With Parise?
by Paul on 01/06/12 at 01:07 PM ET

Darren Dreger of TSN answers some email,
Has there been any word on the situation with Zach Parise and the New Jersey Devils? I believe as of January 1 he’s eligible to sign a new contract with them? If unsigned he will be the best trade bait available at the trade deadline - especially if the Devils lost the tight race for a playoff spot in the East!
Dreger: There is no question the Devils will be faced with a very difficult decision at trade deadline. Parise in so many ways is the cornerstone of this franchise and the Devils appreciate that and want very much to re-sign him. However, with unresticted free agency looming these situations are always delicate because the player (Parise) wants to be fair to the organization, but also wants to test the market, primarily to see which of the true contenders surface among the multiple bidders that will undoubtedly express considerable interest. This isn’t about money. Zach Parise will get his money either from New Jersey or the open market. At this stage, not much has changed…Parise wants to wait, focus on the season and helping the Devils secure a playoff spot. However, in the coming weeks Lou Lamoriello will have to decide whether he can afford to continue to play the waiting game and risk his captain and star player walking in July, or Lamoriello will have to embrace the feeding frenzy and trade offers that will increase in value in the weeks leading up to the deadline.

Zach Parise Has His Eye On The Stanley Cup
by Paul on 11/21/11 at 09:52 AM ET
Comments (20)
from Riche Chere of the Star-Ledger,
Although he is recognized as one of the top stars in the league and respected for his work ethic and skills, Parise wants more. He wants a ring.
“When you’re here for seven years and have never been past the second round, you realize it’s going by quick,” he said. “You see how hard it is. There are 29 teams every year that are disappointed, so it’s not easy. You’ve got to get lucky, you have to have a great team and you have to have a healthy team and avoid injuries at key times. A lot of things have to fall into place.”
This is a pivotal season in Parise’s career. He will become an unrestricted free agent July 1. Although the Devils say they’d like to sign him to a long-term deal, it is likely he will test the market.
How the Devils do this season and what Parise perceives as the club’s future chances of winning a Cup will be hugely instrumental in whether he stays with the Devils.

Parise Looks To Remain A Devil
by David Pavlak on 09/08/11 at 03:00 PM ET

Lets call a spade a spade. The Devils need Zach Parise. There is no other way around it. He has become the name assosciated with this franchise after Brodeur began to wear down. Walk around inside the Prudential Center, and you’ll see a majority of the jersey’s of the fans donning his last name. With a one year deal signed this offseason in an effort to avoid arbitration, Parise has moved on step closer to free agency. However, in a recent interview, he has made it clear that he would like to remain in New Jersey, and not take his services to any other club.

Looking on the Left

We continue our preview of the top players at each position with a look at the left wing. In my auction league with bidding that is taking place all month, I am currently looking for a low-cost left wing option, of which there are plenty. But here are the options that you can reasonably pay top dollar for or feel comfortable drafting with an early-round pick.

Devils Featured In 30 In 30
by David Pavlak on 08/17/11 at 09:46 PM ET
Comments (0)

I will provide some of the highlights from the Devils portion on 30 In 30 from the NHL per Mike Morreale.
“The New Jersey Devils couldn’t catch a break in the first half of the 2010-11 season, even after the summertime re-signing of Russian superstar Ilya Kovalchuk to a mammoth 15-year, $100 million contract that took nearly the entire summer to complete.
Instead, they suffered subpar performances under new coach John MacLean, lost star forward Zach Parise to injury 12 games into the season, saw Kovalchuk struggle in the early going, and found themselves in last place in the Eastern Conference at 9-22-2 by the time Christmas rolled around.
It was around that time General Manager Lou Lamoriello opted to fire MacLean and rehire Jacques Lemaire in a last-ditch effort to qualify for the playoffs.”
True, the Kovy ordeal did seem to be a major distraction to the team. John MacLean also seemed lost in the shuffle of being the coach for that year. His attention was not entirely on the team as it needed to be, and the results showed on the ice. I had a lot of friends who follow the Devils point out the same thing. He wasn’t able to coach the team the way you thought he was going too. Lou made the decsion he thought he had too, and it worked to an extent. They didn’t make the playoffs, but they certainly improved. If Parise was healthy, they would have definitely contended for the eight seed that year.

Captain Anonymous
by William Morrison on 08/17/11 at 07:56 AM ET

What is a captain? “A person who is at the head of or in authority over others; chief; leader.” What is a hockey captain? “A locker room leader, motivator; a medium between players and upper management; a primary representative of the team both on and off the ice.”
It is a unique situation this off-season that all three New York City metro area teams will be naming a new captain for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The New York Rangers have the most candidates and are probably in the best situation with the most quality choices to choose from. So, we will start with the Rangers and then look at the Devils, who have both the easiest and hardest choices of the three, and finally we will look at the New York Islanders who have the youngest crop of candidates with the most potential.

Sign Here Or No “C”?
by Paul on 08/13/11 at 09:00 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Tom Gulitti of The Record,
Even before Jamie Langenbrunner was traded Jan. 7, Zach Parise was viewed by his teammates and many inside and outside the organization as the likely successor to Langenbrunner as the Devils’ captain.
Parise was recovering from knee surgery at the time, and made it back for only one game in April, so there was no need to rush to name him captain last season. At this point, however, it remains uncertain if Parise will be given the “C” before the team’s 2011-12 season opener.
If Parise had signed a long-term extension, as both sides hoped, the decision would be a no-brainer. But, because he settled for a one-year contract and remains eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2012, that might be reason to delay a while longer.

The Presence Of Parise
by David Pavlak on 08/02/11 at 10:21 PM ET
Comments (9)

The Devils were able to sit back and let out of a sigh of relief the other day. Zach Parise, their always reliable left-winger was signed to a one-year deal. This also means that the Devils and Parise will not have to enter an arbitrational hearing. During this upcoming season, the Devils will be doing their best to sign him to a long term contract to keep him in a Devils sweater.
Parise is an overlooked member of this New Jersey Devils team. The injury to his knee, which required surgery, limited him to 13 games, and it seemed as if everyone forgot he was around, or still a member of the team. Sure, you had Ilya Kovalchuk and his one-hundred million dollar contract and Brodeur’s timeless goaltending abilities to still gaze upon, but Parise has been the heart and soul of this team for many seasons, and his numbers will prove to you how this is true.

Parise Signs For One Year

from Tom Gulitti of Fire
The Devils and restricted free agent Zach Parise have agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract to avoid Wednesday’s salary arbitration hearing in Toronto.
Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said the sides will continue to work with Parise toward a long-term agreement. According to the collective bargaining agreement, Parise will not be allowed to sign a contract beginning in the 2012-13 season until Jan. 1, 2012. The sides can negotiate and agree upon a deal before then, but they cannot sign it or make it official.
Parise remains eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.& Ice,

Bettman Expects Devils’ Potential Sale Won’t Need His Involvement
by Jon Jordan on 06/21/11 at 06:28 PM ET
Comments (7)
From Fire & Ice’s Tom Gulitti:
A report in The Hockey News earlier this month said the commissioner would “focus on the situations in New Jersey and Los Angeles” after the Atlanta/Winnipeg sale and Dallas’ sale were resolved.
“I don’t know who wrote that or why, but no,” Bettman said when I asked him if he had any plans to focus on the Devils’ ownership situation or monitor it more closely.
Although Brick City LLC – headed by Mike Gilfillan and Ray Chambers – is looking to sell its 47 percent share, Bettman said that the potential sale is not impacting team business and he expects it to be resolved without need for him to be involved, “to the best of my knowledge in my constant communications with everybody.”

Arbitration For Parise?
by Paul on 06/10/11 at 11:00 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Two months after the team’s season ended and nearly eight weeks since Lou Lamoriello said the Devils would do “everything we possibly can as expeditious as possible” to re-sign him, left wing Zach Parise said there is still “nothing” going on with his contract.
At this point, it appears inevitable that the Devils will file for team-elected arbitration before next week’s deadline, which will either be 5 p.m. Wednesday or next Friday if there is a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. Filing for team-elected arbitration would prevent Parise from fielding offer sheets from other teams if he’s still unsigned at noon on July 1, when he’d become a restricted free agent.
When I asked Lamoriello today if that is indeed his plan, he would not discuss it.
“That’s something we’d never talk about,” he said.

Still No Parise Contract Talks
by Paul on 05/19/11 at 06:47 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Parise has been working out and skating at Prudential Center since the season ended and plans to head home to Minnesota at the end of next week. He is slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1. The first pivotal date, however, is June 15 or 48 hours after the completion of the Stanley Cup Finals (whichever comes later). That is the deadline for teams to file for team-elected arbitration.
The longer this goes without a start to contract negotiations, the more it looks like the Devils will use that deadline for team-elected arbitration as a leverage point. After missing all but one of the last 70 games of the 2010-11 season and having Nov. 2 surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, Parise would enter any arbitration hearing (if it got to that point) from a weakened position – though the player’s last two seasons factor into in determining the arbitration award.

Parise’s Contract Status
by Paul on 04/07/11 at 06:22 AM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
“Nothing has happened thus far,” Parise said. “I’m sure if my agents hear something they’ll let me know.”
The Devils could file for team-elected arbitration – the deadline is the later date of June 15 or 48 hours after the final game of the Stanley Cup Finals – which would prevent Parise from fielding offer sheets from other teams on July 1.
That would also lock Parise into a one-year contract, however, if the sides didn’t reach an agreement before the arbitrators hands down a decision.Parise is open to signing long-term, but doesn’t know at this point if he will have to settle for a one-year deal.
“It’s tough to answer right now,” he said. “I guess you’ve just got to see how everything plays out. Of course, you’d like the long-term thing, but we’ve got to find out what the team’s plans are and we’ll go from there. I don’t think it will take that much time.”

Parise Ready to Play on Saturday
by Alanah McGinley on 04/01/11 at 12:33 PM ET

From Corey Masisak at NHL.com:
Parise said he is “ready to go” Saturday for the Devils against the Montreal Canadiens. There is still the matter of New Jersey’s game Friday night at Prudential Center against the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Flyers.
“Yeah, it definitely will be [odd],” Parise said after being the last one off the ice at the Devils’ morning skate Friday. “I’ll probably be thinking the whole game about being excited for tomorrow. Just kind of getting myself mentally prepared tonight for tomorrow’s game and just kind of watching different things—different system things positionally. What the guys are doing now is a little different than what I was doing before.”
And from Tom Gulitti Fire & Ice:
“I already kind of am [nervous],” he said. “I definitely will be. I guess it’s kind off like the first game of the year all over again type of thing. So, yeah, (he’ll be) a little nervous. That’s for sure.”

Trade Parise?
by Paul on 01/30/11 at 09:18 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Devils LW Zach Parise, out the past three months following knee surgery, hopes to return to play in the next month.
But will he do it in a New Jersey uniform?
Parise, a pending restricted free agent who has a $3.25-million US cap hit, is expected to play before the end of the season and if he goes on the trade block at the deadline, there will be several contenders interested.
Parise will play a handful of games before the end of the season. If he isn’t in the playoffs, he could play for the U.S. at the world championship.
Parise, who can become a UFA in the summer of 2012, could simply decide to sign a one-year deal with the Devils or make it impossible for the club to sign him to try and force a trade.
The Kings have been trying to acquire a forward with Parise’s skill set since last summer, when they missed out on Ilya Kovalchuk.

Afternoon Line
by Paul on 01/26/11 at 02:02 PM ET
Comments (0)
The most significant question moving forward is how or whether an upturn in the Devils’ fortunes helps encourage soon-to-be restricted free agent Zach Parise to commit to the Devils long-term. Is seeing a happy, productive Kovalchuk and rejuvenated Brodeur enough to get Parise under contract? If not, Lamoriello faces the unpleasant prospect of having to decide whether to trade the team’s most important player in the coming weeks.
-Scott Burnside of ESPN
Parise is represented by Wade Arnott and Don Meehan of Newport Sports. Lamoriello has done a million deals with them over the years, so there’s a relationship and a comfort level there. But this is going to come down to Parise deciding whether he wants to remain a Devil long-term. It’s uncanny how many different hockey people point to the Los Angeles Kings or Minnesota Wild as long-term fits for Parise. He’s an RFA for one more year before reaching UFA status in July 2012. If Newport tries to negotiate a one-year deal for Parise, then you’ll know what his intentions are.
-Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.

What Will The Devils Do With Zach Parise?
by Paul on 01/09/11 at 08:39 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
If Lamoriello cannot convince Parise to take the money the Devils will throw at him, if Parise is either unwilling or unable to commit to a lifetime of hockey as a Devil by late June, then the GM is going to have to hold an auction for his best player in order to secure as much young talent and as many high draft picks as possible as quickly as possible.
Parise has given no indication of where he believes his future lies, other than to say he has not decided a thing. Ordinarily, the Devils would allow the decision to be deferred into next season.
But given the extraordinary circumstances that have kneecapped the franchise, the Devils cannot take the risk Parise could go free without a return—or diminished return as a 2012 deadline rental—by permitting him to play out next year on a one-year salary arbitration contract.

No Parise Talks
by Paul on 01/03/11 at 09:51 AM ET

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
When asked about how really feels about wanting to re-sign with the Devils, however, Parise chose his words very carefully.
“Of course, you play in a place and you get drafted by them and you play there your whole career and you’d love to play in one spot for your whole career,” he said. “So, we’ll see what happens, I guess. I do like playing here and I like living here and everything. We’ll see how all that stuff turns out, but ideally you’d like to stay.”
Still, Parise, 26, seemed to be acknowledging that things don’t always work out “ideally.”
The calendar has turned to 2011 and the Devils have yet to make any move to initiate contract talks.
“It’s all been the same,” Parise said. “I haven’t heard anything.”

What’s Going On With Zach Parise?
by Paul on 12/17/10 at 02:00 PM ET
Comments (1)
Adam Proteau of The Hockey News opens his email bag…
Adam, with Zach Parise becoming a restricted free agent after the season, will a team try and sign him to an offer sheet? Let’s say Toronto throws an offer at him that the Devils can’t match. Would the Leafs have to surrender two first round picks, a second and a third as compensation?
If Parise makes it to the summer without a contract extension from the Devils, there will be a bunch of teams fighting to tender him an offer sheet. The compensation you’re mentioning would be surrendered for a player who signed for between $6.1- and $7.7-million. If a team has to offer more than that to land Parise as an RFA, the compensation jumps to four first round draft picks. For clubs owing four draft selections in the same round as compensation, they must have those picks available in the next five drafts. Clubs also cannot acquire picks to then use as compensation.
That said, having watched Lou Lamoriello work his magic on the league for as long as I have, I’d bet you anything Parise never makes it to the market. Some might say Lamoriello would be wrapping himself and the franchise even tighter in a salary cap straightjacket by signing Parise, but I think he’d demote half the team to the American League to get under the cap and keep one of the best two-way players in the game.
If I’m wrong and Parise is allowed to move on, the Devils’ woeful offense this season will look like the 1980s-era Oilers in comparison. But I’m not wrong. He’s staying.

Parise Out With Lower-Body Injury

note original post time was 8:54am, I’ve added a video of the Parise injury below, it looks like a groin to me and this via a Tom Gulitti tweet, Parise:
“I know exactly when I hurt it. I hurt it in August and it’s been bothering me. It hasn’t gone away. I kind of hurt it every game.”
via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Devils left wing Zach Parise is headed back to New Jersey to be examined by team doctors for what the team is calling “a lower-body injury,” which he sustained in the second period of tonight’s 3-1 loss to the Kings in Los Angeles.
Parise will definitely not play Monday in Vancouver. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello accompanied Parise back to New Jersey on a late flight.
Parise appeared to injure his right leg in a collision with the Kings’ Kyle Clifford with 3:35 left in the second period. His right leg turned out as he fell awkwardly to the ice inside the Kings’ blue line. He barely touched his right skate to the ice as he returned to the Devils’ bench and climbed over the boards. He did play one shift after that, but did not play at all in the third.

It May Come Down To Parise Or Kovalchuk
by Paul on 07/10/10 at 05:57 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Devils left wing Zach Parise has more than a passing interest in the never-ending Ilya Kovalchuk saga.
Another quiet day passed as Kovalchuk remains unsigned despite the Devils being the only NHL team that is still saying publicly that it is trying to sign the unrestricted free agent left wing.
Parise said he’s followed the proceedings from a far in Minnesota. Friends have texted him and called him about the same rumors many of you have read….
One is about whether Kovalchuk will be his teammate again next season. The other concerns nothing less than his future with the team.
If the Devils commit financially to Kovalchuk with the kind of money he is apparently seeking, there might not be enough salary cap space to sign Parise to a long-term extension. Parise, who will turn 26 on July 28, is scheduled to become a restricted free agent next summer and is two years away from unrestricted free agency.

The Devils decided not to practice today and had the players work out off the ice today. Both Zach Parise and Bryce Salvador were there and said they plan to play in Friday night’s game against Nasvhille….
Parise said he thinks his “upper-body injury” had “something to do with Monday”—meaning Monday’s 3-2 loss in Philadelphia. Kimmo Timonen did pick up a boarding penalty for hittting Parise late in that game, but there was nothing obvious wrong with him afterward and he was able to practice on Tuesday afternoon.
“When I woke up yesterday morning I wasn’t feeling right at all,” he said.

Parise Sees A Lot Of Chara

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
“Going into the game, we knew we were going to be seeing a lot of him (Chara), our line was,” Parise said. “A few times, we were able to get in there, but I think we’ve got to do a better job against him. We have played well against him before in the last couple of games, but tonight we couldn’t get much going.”
Devils coach Brent Sutter said it’s up to Parise to fight through that sort of thing and not his teammates to protect him.
“Every time someone gets touched, it’s a big deal because someone gets touched,” Sutter said. “Your best players have to play through some things too. This time of the season and come playoffs, you’re going to have to take punches to the head for the benefit of the team. Did he intimidate us? He certainly didn’t intimidate us out there. He’s a competitor and Zach has to learn to play through stuff too. That’s part of being a good player. You’ve got to play through some things maybe you don’t like. You have to fight through it. I’m not saying he doesn’t. I’m just saying that every time someone gets hit in a game doesn’t mean you have to respond or a positive or negative way either. We know how to handle that. It’s not like we don’t know how to handle these things.”

“One guy leaned over the glass ... I mean, what he said to me, you can’t print that stuff,” he said. “From then on, I got much more satisfaction beating those guys than anybody else.”
The animosity has softened 33 years later. Parise, now 66, is content to watch his son hear the name-calling and stir up his own hatred of the Rangers. Zach Parise, in fact, said just that after the Devils finally got on the board with a 4-3 overtime win in Game 3 on Sunday.
“We always disliked the Rangers ... but we have to start hating them more,” Zach Parise said.

from Fire & Ice,
Parise’s fight came 3:47 into the third period against Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Boyle. Parise actually inadvertantly started the altercation by kicking Boyle’s left skate out from under him in the right corner.
“If I did, I didn’t try,” Parise said. “I wasn’t trying to slew foot him or anything. I was just going for the puck. We got back in front of the net and he tried to slew foot me and he got me in the face, so it just escalated from there.”
Parise said he had not been in a fight since midget. “First and probably last for a while,” he said. “I don’t see it happening again anytime soon. It was all kind of a blur when it happened…It was fun. Something you’ve got to do.”

from David Amber at ESPN,
In this week’s Facing Off, Parise tells us what it was like to upstage Sid the Kid, how his father helped get him to the bigs and what latest prank has one of his teammates fuming….
Q: Any pranksters on the team?
A: Yeah, it’s getting ugly in the locker room right now [laughs]. The latest prank was on Brian Gionta. He just got a new car, a BMW M6. One guy, I won’t say who, took this huge mannequin, like 6 feet tall, put a little skate towel around him, took Gionta’s car keys and stuffed the mannequin into the front seat. This is a little two-seat sports car, so it is literally jammed into the car. Gionta is freaking out. He loves his new car and there’s this mannequin inside scratching it up [laughs]. So, guys are doing all kinds of crazy stuff.

One of many complaints that casual sports fans have about hockey is that there are too many “foreigners” in our league. Which, by the way, is utter bunk because they support the NBA’s European and Asian outreach, and the Major Leagues are now making Hispanic players the norm.
But, they do have a point. The NFL, a league with 99.9999999% Americans in it, is the man in the United States right now. The NHL needs some new and talented red, white and blue blood.

More to Come from Parise

From Rich Chere at the Star-Ledger,
Parise’s story has been well-documented. The son of former NHL player J.P. Parise, he was bypassed by his father’s old team, the Islanders, in the 2003 entry draft. The Devils picked him 17th overall, and both the Islanders and their fans have agonized over the decision ever since.
After leading the Devils with 31 goals last season, his sophomore season in the NHL, Parise is regarded as one of the league’s rising young stars. This past summer the Devils signed him to a four-year, $12.5 million contract and it figures to be a bargain if he does what everyone believes he will do.
“He can be one of the best players in the league,” right winger Brian Gionta said. “He’s a young guy still (23). He broke out last year, but there is still a lot to be seen from Zach. He has a lot of skill, he works hard and he has a nose for the net.”
