Offensive?

from Julia Keller of the Chicago Tribune,
We think we’re enlightened. We think we’re evolved. We think we’re past all that nasty old stuff from the bad old days. We think we’re “post-racial,” to use the curious term that popped up in the wake of President Barack Obama’s election.
Then a couple of fun-loving but culturally tone-deaf Blackhawks decided to dress up for Halloween as former Bulls Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen—complete with blackface.
You can view the picture of Adam Burish dressed as Rodman and Patrick Kane as Pippen at ChicagoNow.

The following statement was issued today by Chicago Blackhawks Head Team Physician Dr. Michael Terry:
“Adam Burish went into the boards on Sunday night in Minnesota and injured his right knee. When a player like him leaves the ice it is always concerning, and unfortunately he suffered an ACL tear. He will undergo a reconstruction as soon as possible and we anticipate a complete recovery. His return will take approximately six months.”

Burish A Lucky Man Tonight
by Paul on 05/17/09 at 08:20 PM ET

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,
Adam Burish knew immediately there was a problem.
“I saw his skate come right up my throat, and right away I grabbed my neck and said there’s something coming out here,” Burish said. “There were a couple drips, so I was pretty darn lucky.”
It was the second period, and Burish and linemate Ben Eager were forechecking in the Detroit zone when Eager and a Detroit player got tied up. Eager lost his balance and his skate flew up and clipped Burish in the throat.
It was a play reminiscent to the scary Richard Zednik incident last season, when Olli Jokinen’s skate blade sliced Zednik’s jugular vein.
But Burish was more fortunate; he skated away from Eager’s out-of-control skate knowing he was a lucky man.
“I don’t know how I’m so darn lucky,” Burish said. “It was centimeters, millimeters away from slicing (his throat).”
added 8:27pm, Video of the incident is included in the game hightlights from NBC via ESPN below. The skate to throat incident starts at the 45 second mark…

Suspension For Burish?
by Paul on 04/21/09 at 07:13 AM ET

from Tim Sassone of Between The Circles at the Chicago Daily-Herald,
Flames coach Mike Keenan wants Adam Burish suspended for what happened near the end of Monday’s game in the altercation with Rene Bourque.
“I’m disappointed they weren’t given a match penalty for deliberate attempt to injure,” Keenan said. “A cross-check to the face where Burish broke his stick over his face. He suffered an injury because of that cross-check to the face. I have no idea how the referees could miss it. It was blatant.”
It’s beautiful how poor Mike claims his player is a victim when the Flames have been allowed to get away with one cross-check after another after whistles when goalie Miikka Kiprusoff makes a save.
added 7:33am, watch Keenan’s post-game press conference below…

Hockey Players are Different

This was published yesterday but we only just came across it today. From Adam Burish, winger for the Chicago Blackhawks, in his Chicago Sun-Times blog Dropping the Gloves:
You will not see a hockey player call his own press conference in his front yard with his shirt off, doing sit-ups, and saying how great he is. You will not see a hockey player tell the media how stupid practice is, and how stupid his coach is for not starting him. And you will not see a hockey player bring a gun into a club and accidentally shoot himself.
I know some people will say, ‘well what about Sean Avery.’ Sean Avery recently said he doesn’t understand why other players in the league seem to take his “sloppy seconds,” in reference to another hockey player who is dating his ex-girlfriend. Stupid, I know, but is that the worst thing you’ve heard an athlete say? I don’t think so. In no other sport will you see a team hand out the type of punishment Sean Avery received for it.

Most guys don’t want to fight every night so they won’t take those cheap shots. It’s really like a big playground in middle school. Once you let the bully whose playing pick on one kid, he’s going to run around and keep picking on other kids until somebody stands up to him. Well, at our playground at the United Center, we don’t let bullies play very long....
