Heart Of A Ranger

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
“I don’t know what the right words are, but my heart is pounding out of my chest. Can you tell?” Graves said.
Always the consummate teammate, Graves said it was his hope to go off the ice with his former teammates Mike Richter, Mark Messier and Brian Leetch. However, it was Messier who made Graves stay on the ice to absorb the final applause from one of the most adoring and appreciative crowds I have ever seen.
“Mess is Mess,” Graves said. “He gets greater joy out of other people’s success than his own. That’s just the type of guy he is. That’s Mark.”

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
They and we are honor ing a role model at the Garden tonight, honoring a superior Ranger who was and is a greater New Yorker than he was a hockey player, honoring Adam Graves for who he is as an individual, and not merely what he was on the ice.
He embodies all the qualities we wish for our children to inherit; generous, selfless and genuine. He is the friend you’d trust with your life.

Yesterday, the NY Rangers announced their plans for the retirement of three jerseys. Steve Zipay of Newsday.com has more:
The Rangers will raise not one—-but three—-jerseys to the Madison Square Garden ceiling next February: the No. 9s worn by Adam Graves and Andy Bathgate and the No. 3 sweater worn by defenseman Harry Howell.
In two ceremonies that will bring the number of jerseys in the rafters to eight, Graves’ sweater will be retired in a ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 3 prior to the game against the Atlanta Thrashers and Bathgate and Howell will be saluted on Sunday, Feb. 22, before the Rangers host the Maple Leafs.

The Game Has Changed

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
Back when Adam Graves arrived in the National Hockey League in the mid-1980s, the heyday of Wayne Gretzky, hockey was played like an icy hybrid of the National Basketball Association….
Today, the sport often resembles Saturday afternoon in the English Premiership.
“It’s gone from a game of high scoring, to almost a soccer style, where you look for your break, get it, then go right back into your system,” Graves said.

via Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
Former Windsor Spitfires captain Adam Graves is a wonderful person and deserves every accolade he receives, but aren’t the New York Rangers getting a little carried away when the recent announcement that they plan to retire the No. 9 sweater worn by Graves sometime during the 2008-09 season? Sure, he was a 50-goal scorer, a Stanley Cup winner and a stand-up guy in the community, but sweater retirements should be rare occurrences and left for players headed to the Hall of Fame - like Andy Bathgate, another Ranger who wore No. 9, won a Hart Trophy with them and is already enshrined in the Hall.
