from Alex Kovalev at RDS (translated),
It is with pleasure that I join the team of the first RDS.ca to keep contact with you, but also to let you know what happens with my new training. I also take this column to comment on topical issues, as the sad news that will force Andrei Markov to miss the next four months of operations.
At first, I want to talk about my team, the Senators. I’ll be on the second trio with Peter Regin (center) and Mike Fisher, who left his position as center. I am confident that things will go well because, first, I feel very good and secondly because I know we have a solid team. Just look at our first trio (Michalec-Spezza-Alfredsson) to understand that we will be dangerous.

from Barry Riz of TSN,
The former Montreal Canadiens forward - who signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Ottawa Senators as a free agent this summer - told reporters on Thursday that he would like to finish his career in Montreal.
“I was disappointed, I thought for sure I’d be staying here,” said Kovalev at his charity golf tournament in Montreal. “I couldn’t really understand what had just happened. In the end, I took it from a business point of view. You had a chance to stay here, and you didn’t, so you just go and do the job somewhere else. But maybe somewhere in the future I’ll be back again, and get the same support.”

from TSN,
A Russian sports newspaper reports that the Montreal Canadiens have offered the team’s captaincy to pending unrestricted free agent Alex Kovalev and that Saku Koivu is no longer in plans for the team.
According to Sovietsky Sport, the Canadiens don’t intend to re-sign Koivu and would opt to re-sign Kovalev to a one-year deal worth between $6 million and $7.5 million. The story also claims that Kovalev would be awarded the captaincy.

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,
Montreal forward Alex Kovalev will be wearing the captain’s “C” in front of the home folks at Sunday’s All-Star Game.
Kovalev was named captain of the Eastern Conference team and San Jose center Joe Thornton will wear the “C” for the Western Conference squad when the NHL holds its 57th All-Star Game at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

From the CP via TSN,
Alex Kovalev said making a hockey DVD for charity was prompted by his own heart troubles as a child in Russia.
The Montreal Canadiens star forward released a two-DVD set on Monday called “Alex Kovalev - My Hockey Tips And Training Methods.”
All proceeds will go toward helping kids around the world with cardiac problems.
Also on Kovalev, a story out earlier today in La Presse [French] and summarized by Kevin Mio at Habs Inside/Out:
Alex Kovalev could shatter some long-standing Canadiens records this season if he continues to put up points on the power play. With 16 goals and 26 assists with the man advantage, Kovalev is within four goals of Yvan Cournoyer’s record of 20 set in 1966-67. Kovalev is also eight points shy of Mats Naslund’s points record set in 1985-86 when he had 19 goals and 31 assists on the power play.

Kovalev Having Fun
by Paul on 02/09/08 at 09:18 AM ET

from Dave Stubbs at Habs Inside/Out,
Now, 55 games into this season, Kovalev is the powerful locomotive pulling the Canadiens Express, the creative right-wing on one of the league’s premier lines with centreman Tomas Plekanec and left-wing Andrei Kostitsyn.
It’s been a long time since the 16-year NHL veteran has had this much fun, showcasing his prodigious, highlight-reel talent with a mature completeness of game that sees Carbonneau use him in every situation. And he’s on pace to enjoy a career season in a few statistical categories.
KK friend Roman of eNHL.cz pointed me to a video of Kovalev talking about being the first hockey player in space. The first minute or so of the video is just that, video with no sound, but after that, we hear Kovalev speak about his intentions to go into space.
You can watch the original version of the video, with Kovalev speaking in English about his plans.

Alex Kovalev delivered an elbow to Holweg that was missed by the refs. Hollweg’s first shift after the hit, delivered a hit from behind on Sergei Kostitsyn.
Ryan Hollweg was given five for boarding and a game. According to Mike Emrick, this type of penalty also brings an automatic one game suspension.

Kovalev the Comeback of the Year
by Alanah McGinley on 01/03/08 at 05:06 PM ET

From the CP via TSN,
If the National Hockey League had an award for comeback player of the year, a prime candidate could be Alex Kovalev of the Montreal Canadiens.
Last season, the skilled but unpredictable right winger scored only 18 goals and looked to be on his way out of Montreal and perhaps even the NHL.
But Kovalev has rebounded to become the Canadiens scoring leader, as well as acting as mentor to young Belarus forwards Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn.
“You can’t be perfect all your career - there’s going to be ups and downs,” the 34-year-old Kovalev said Thursday after the pre-game skate. “Last year was one of those years where you can’t find your game and nothing’s going your way.

Kovalev Says Media Twisted Words
by Paul on 10/18/07 at 01:52 PM ET

from TSN,
Following Tuesday’s loss to the Panthers, the Canadiens associate captain voiced his frustration with the tactics that were used in the dying moments that allowed Florida to tie the game.
“In the last two minutes, we knew they were going to put a lot of pressure on us,” Kovalev told the TEAM 990 in Montreal. “It was just my idea that we could have taken a timeout, get organized and get the right people on the ice. Maybe it could have been better. That’s what I saw from the bench."…
On Thursday, Kovalev was critical of the media for creating a story where there was none.
“Everybody knows nothing is going on and everything is good between me and Carbo,” Kovalev told reporters. “It’s just you guys try to have a competition between each other and try to twist words, who twisted words better.”
