Peace Between the NHL and KHL?

From Stu Hackel at Red Light on SI.com:

In a briefing published on the league’s website, KHL President Alexander Medvedev said Tuesday that he is interested in improving relations with the NHL in the aftermath of last week’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash.

“After the Lokomotiv tragedy I had a call from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who expressed his condolences,” he said. “The grief is felt by the whole hockey family. Now we can take a new view of all our differences with the NHL. I repeat once again: When we cooperate we can achieve much more for hockey than when in conflict or in isolation. I would like very much for this to be no mere surge of emotion, but that we move in step with each other. Gary and I agreed to meet in the near future and consider how we can further work together.”

This is good news because relations between the two league have sometimes been frosty, with gusts up to nasty, for a few years.

KHL—NHL Agreement to “Avoid Hostility”

Over at The Malik Report, George has details of the agreement available. And here is the KHL’s press release on the broad strokes of the newly-signed memorandum:

The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and National Hockey League (NHL) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that regulates player transitions between the two bodies, respects the professional contracts of players from both leagues and forces both sides to complete a range of procedures to avoid hostility in the transitioning of players from one league to the other.

The MoU’s conclusion marks an important step forward in the relationship between the two most respected hockey leagues in the world. The nine points of the agreement will be effective for the next 12 months and can be reevaluated at the end of that period.  Terms of the agreement include the exchanging of lists of contracted and free agent players, each league providing the other their standard contract templates and agreeing to appoint official representatives to conduct negotiations in person in Toronto or New York to resolve any player contract disputes.

Afternoon Line

The KHL released a statement yesterday about their interest in expanding to Italy.  Today, some words from the man behind it, Alexander Medvedev:

“Here ice hockey is tradition too and the sport - a mixture of speed, guile and imagination – resembles the Italian character. The expansion of the League is irreversible, the result of a geopolitical project, and it will bring in fans from all over Europe. In Saint Petersburg for example, where there is also the football club Zenith managed by Luciano Spalletti, a public survey revealed that 98% of female fans preferred a hockey player’s image over a footballer’s. That could happen in Italy too. I am very happy that the Federation is here today and I hope that this initiative can help the movement grow up from its roots. So, see you again in April, when we’ll launch the project.”

Hard to know if he’s marketing a hockey team or a new boy band. Regardless, we’ve heard from a few Italian hockey fans who say they’re pretty excited about the KHL’s expansion.

Man Behind The KHL Interested In Purchasing An NHL Team

from Alan Adams at CBC Sports,

Russian billionaire Alexander Medvedev, who has been a thorn in the side of the NHL this season, claims he is looking at buying an NHL team.

“Actually, we have considered 10 opportunities and we’re doing due diligence on three teams,” Medvedev told reporters Tuesday following an oldtimers’ game at the world men’s hockey championship in Zurich, Switzerland.

“It will help us make our decisions.”

Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Gasprom, the world’s biggest natural gas producer, would not say which teams he is looking at, but hinted he thinks the NHL should put more teams in Canada.

Russia and the NHL

From Dan Barnes at Canwest News via the National Post,

But Medvedev is not Russian hockey, merely a player in it. For now. The fact that he is trying to convince Igor Larionov to put a familiar, moderate face on the CHL as its first commissioner is a signal of his savvy. He is not the NHL’s worst nightmare, just a friendly competitor. For now.

“Mr. Medvedev obviously has a strong interest in hockey and we thought it might make sense to sit down and get a better understanding of his interest and what he is trying to accomplish,” said Daly.

The answer to that question will be different in a year or two than it is today. The assumption that he wants to hurt the NHL is a pretty easy one to make, but he resents it.

“It’s a very stupid assumption,” said Medvedev. “We don’t want to weaken the NHL. We want to enrich European hockey and the NHL.”

Rivaling the NHL

From Allan Maki at the Globe & Mail,

Fetisov, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, was quoted on the Russiatoday website endorsing what will be called the Continental Hockey League and include teams outside of Russia.

“At the moment, the top players will continue playing in the NHL because they believe it’s the best league in the word,” Fetisov said. “But if our league gains the same status as our North American counterparts, the new Ovechkins, Kovalchuks and Datsyuks will stay here because they’ll be playing in a very competitive and financially competitive league.”

Fetisov said the new league will also stage a draft like the NHL.

“If we’re able to draft players from the various European leagues, Canadians added to our talent in Russia, we’ll definitely be a serious contender to the NHL.
