from Greg Logan of Newsday,

One year ago at this time, the Islanders made the stunning .announcement of their decision to buy out the final four years of controversial captain Alexei Yashin’s 10-year contract. Now, Yashin’s return on a one-year contract next season is under .discussion, but general manager Garth Snow and owner Charles Wang so far have balked at their former star’s asking price.

Agent Marc Gandler, who represents Yashin, said he last spoke with Snow on Thursday when there was no progress .toward an agreement.

Killing Off Some Wild Yashin Rumors

From Michael Russo, Russo’s Rants at the Star Tribune,

Funny, last year when I wrote at the Draft that the Wild was going to pursue Alexei Yashin, people didn’t believe me even though it was true. Now it’s being reported the Wild has interest in Yashin and people believe it when it’s not true.

I’ve been told as of now Yashin’s name has not come up within Wild offices and it has not had conversations with Yashin’s agent, Mark Gandler, as has been reported.

Here’s the deal: the Wild had genuine interest in Yashin last summer when it was reported he’d be willing to sign for little money. The Wild made an offer, and Yashin responded by asking for multiple millions of dollars, according to people in the know.

That left a sour taste in the Wild’s mouth, and as of now, it has no interest in revisiting him despite the strong season he had in Russia. That could change, of course, but this is what I’m being led to believe now.

Yashin Considering Return to the NHL

From Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun,

It’s believed the Wild and Canadiens have held talks with Yashin’s agents.

The 35-year-old Yashin, a former No. 1 pick of the Senators, had 43 points in 56 games this season with Yaroslavl. He returned to his homeland after receiving a $17.6-million US buyout from the Islanders last summer.

“Some teams were asking me about (Yashin) at the under-18 championships in (Kazan, Russia last month),” said agent Todd Diamond. “We had a few teams that were inquiring. He had a great year over there. He was the MVP of the league and he was the leading scorer in the playoffs.”

Thank You Yashin

from Moscow News,

Loko clinched its first final in five years thanks in part to the performance of acquisition Alexei Yashin, who signed a one-year deal last season, and whose arrival was greeted with great excitement by the Russian hockey world.

Here was one of Russia’s top players, a star originally from Yekaterin-burg who went to the NHL, and whose career was by no means washed up, agreeing to come back to his homeland. This even though he left behind probably more money, and disadvantaged his parents, who now live in Canada, and his girlfriend, former supermodel Carol Alt, in New York.

It signaled that the league, just as it was preparing to revamp itself into a serious challenger for hockey global supremacy, was legit. And it seems that Yashin enjoyed a bit of a lift in Russia in his slumping career

How Is Yashin Doing

from Sharkpage,

I asked Carol Alt about hockey, but blanked on the name of her boyfriend, Alexei Yashin. Not my fault, I am a Western Conference guy. She mentioned that she talks to Yashin daily, and that he is enjoying the season with Russian Super League team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, where he has 5 goals and 9 assists in 19 games.
