Chris Pronger Named Ducks Captain

Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle announced today that defenseman Chris Pronger will take over as captain, with last year’s captain Scott Niedermayer still mulling retirement.
“The coaching staff and management had a discussion and ultimately it was left up to us, the coaches, to make that decision and we made it through consultation through the last 48 hours,” Carlyle said. “We came to the conclusion that we thought Chris Pronger would be best suited to fit the captaincy role.”

Uncharted European Territory

The NHL will enter uncharted territory and return to its outdoor roots during a new season that begins on Saturday with the Anaheim Ducks starting their Stanley Cup defence on European ice.
The Ducks and Los Angeles Kings travel to London to play the first NHL regular season game in Europe as the NHL bids to gain a foothold in a market which has also attracted serious attention from the NFL and NBA.
“We’ve got to look at extending our brand outside of North America, whenever we can,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. “We think that to take regular season games to Europe is a milestone for our league. Is it ideal from a preparation standpoint? No. But I think when the league asks you to go, you go.”

Brits Paying High Price To See The Games

Tickets for the 17,500 seats, priced at $50, $90 and $130, were sold out in 2 1/2 weeks with very limited advertising, says Lucy Ellison, spokeswoman for the O2 arena, site of the games.
The price on the scalpers’ black market is way above that.
Andrew Morris, a Canadian expat and fan of his hometown Vancouver Canucks, says his girlfriend planned to get him a ticket as a 30th birthday present. She wasn’t fast enough and found scalpers wanted $770.
“It was really amazing not to get tickets,” says a disappointed Morris, who works in a London nightclub. “If you’re a hockey fan, it doesn’t make much difference who is playing. You just want to see the game.”

Mowers Lands In London

Acquired in a Monday afternoon trade with the Boston Bruins, Mowers quickly threw together a few things, spent as much time as possible with a family that includes two young daughters, and made his way to New York to join the Ducks’ charter flight that had made a refueling stop before its overnight trek across the Atlantic.
“It’s kind of a shocker, at first to switch teams, and then come to the realization that you’re not just going out to California, but you’re going overseas,” Mowers said. “It was a crazy 24 hours, but I feel like I’m settling in, getting to know the guys. The excitement is definitely starting to hit me now.”

Wednesday, NHL.com took an abbreviated double-decker bus tour of London. But the company couldn’t be beat as I joined the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks and the Stanley Cup itself for a quick jaunt through the city.
We all climbed aboard a 30-year-old traditional red double-decker bus that is only used for special occasions. And, what could be more special than escorting the Ducks and the Stanley Cup on a sight-seeing tour?

Not Much NHL Talk In London

The Anaheim Ducks proudly toted the Stanley Cup they won last spring to various tourist sites on a double-decker bus here Wednesday to promote this weekend’s National Hockey League season curtain raiser.
But few Londoners seemed aware of who they were, or what they were carrying, as the team braved a chilly autumn wind that swept across the Thames River.
Steve Campbell, a sports fan from northern England, looked baffled as he watched playoff star Ryan Getzlaf lug the Cup across a busy street to pose with his teammates in front of Big Ben.

Ducks in London

The Ducks finished up practice at the O2, had lunch and headed to the double-decker bus that was to take them on their sightseeing trip through London. Sitting in front of the bus was the Stanley Cup, but it had a new addition to it. All of the Ducks’ names have been engraved on the Cup, and this was the first time they had seen them. It was a sight to see as each of the Ducks players went up to the Cup and got their faces close enough to see their names. They looked like little kids.

Bad Time For Ducks In London

It’s not that the Ducks and Kings shouldn’t play twice in Europe, but not two regular-season games. And not in England. If you’ve ever been there, you know how little use they have for ice.
Two exhibitions in Sweden or the Czech Republic or even Russia would have been perfect. The NHL has very little to gain in the U.K. besides the odd jersey sale.
If the league wanted to make any splash in Britain, it should have recruited the Phoenix Coyotes, coached by Wayne Gretzky, whose name might ring a faint bell with someone.
That would have satisfied the need for a Western team to suffer approximately the same hardship the Kings will. Certainly the fact that the Kings’ owners also own the arena in London was not enough reason for the Ducks to sign up.

The Ducks may be in flux but they are still mighty. The Sharks smell blood, the Red Wings will soar, the Senators sense destiny and the Rangers plan to rock Broadway again.
Those are the Fab Five as the NHL’s 90th season opens this weekend in London, England, with Anaheim opening defence of its title against rival Los Angeles.
The Ducks romped so impressively to California’s first Stanley Cup last June that giving the NHL its first repeat champion in a decade seemed like a sensible proposition. That’s before superstar defenceman Scott Niedermayer and 48-goal scorer Teemu Selanne started talking about retirement.

The NHL gets hammered for many things, some of them deserved, but let’s applaud it for what’s happening this week in London, England.
The puck drops for the NHL’s 90th season with the Los Angeles Kings and defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks playing back-to-back games at the 02 Arena.
I will be on hand and I can’t wait.
A few months ago we mentioned Pierre would be part of the Sportsnet team this season. A welcomed addition I must say.

Ryan Hoping To Make Ducks Roster

Anaheim Ducks rookie hopeful Bobby Ryan wasn’t planning to take any chances after collecting four assists to spark Sunday night’s 5-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in the club’s NHL exhibition finale at Honda Center.
“The cell phone will be shut off and the room phone will be unplugged,” Ryan said.
The last thing Ryan wants to receive is word that he won’t be aboard tonight’s charter flight that will carry the Ducks to London for this weekend’s regular season-opening, two-game set against the Kings.

Duck Hunch

Call it a hunch, but after being around the team for a few days now, I’ve done a complete about-face on this issue. A month ago, I thought both Niedermayer and Selanne were done. At the moment, I’d say it’s more likely that they’ll play at some later date this year rather than retire, in the hopes of winning back-to-back championships.

Bertuzzi Looking For A Championship

Todd Bertuzzi is looking not for redemption, exactly, but for a fresh start in southern California. He’s in a market suddenly crazy for hockey again, playing for a manager, Brian Burke, who stood by him during the darkest days of the Steve Moore incident, with its resultant suspension and pending lawsuit.
He’s wearing the single digit No. 4 on his Anaheim Ducks jersey instead of the more familiar 44 because that number belongs to Rob Niedermayer, and fellow winger Chris Kunitz had dibs on 14.
Bertuzzi looks slimmer than he has in years, down to 230 pounds from the 245 that he played at for most of his career, seeking to get his career back on the rails again, after three mostly nightmarish seasons, played out in medical rooms and court rooms and just about everywhere but on the ice.

Ducks Prepared To Defend The Cup

We accept the responsibility that comes with winning the Stanley Cup,” says Carlyle. “We know we are going to be the measuring sticks for other teams, and we also know that’s not an excuse.”
What he doesn’t know is how all this is going to play out.
As he enters just his third full season as an NHL head coach, Carlyle doesn’t have to be reminded that he enjoyed good breaks on a number of fronts last spring. Can they count on those same things again? That’s just one of the questions he now faces.
The Ducks, in fact, are a veritable Double Jeopardy board as the curtain pulls back on their season.

Can Ducks Inspire Kings?

The Ducks spent their brief summer vacation showing off the Stanley Cup to their friends and relatives.
The Kings, after missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season, spent five months formulating their 39th annual rebuilding plan.
No matter what happens from here on, the Ducks will always be able to say they won the Cup before the Kings, who had a 26-season head start. Painful though it may be, Kings fans should consider the Ducks’ triumph a source of inspiration, not revulsion.

Bertuzzi Feels Great

I feel great, young and healthy,” said Bertuzzi, having had five days of consecutive organized workouts under his belt before getting started against the Kings Saturday.
“It was tough during my time with Detroit, I was really only at about 50 per cent, all beat up and sore during those games. It wasn’t so much my back but everything else was all smashed up—my tail bone was sore, I was a mess.
“Looking back on it, maybe I would have been better off not playing at all last year, but the summer was good and really, the opportunity was too good to pass up, playing with those guys. And we were really close to winning. That series (with the Ducks in the conference final) could have gone either way, at least we felt that way.
“But now to come to the team that just won the Cup, it’s pretty exciting.”

Ducks’ Schneider Out with Broken Ankle Bone

New Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider will be out at least four weeks after breaking a bone in the left ankle during his first preseason game with the Stanley Cup champions.
An MRI taken Sunday revealed that Schneider sustained a non-displaced fracture of the ankle Saturday night in Anaheim’s 3-2 victory over Los Angeles.
The 38-year-old Schneider, beginning his 20th NHL season, signed a two-year, $11.25-million deal with Anaheim. The Ducks brought him aboard this summer as insurance in case captain Scott Niedermayer decides to retire.

Schneider Hurts Ankle - MRI Scheduled

Veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider, signed as a free agent July 1 as insurance against the possible retirement of captain Scott Niedermayer, left the game midway through the second period because of an ankle injury. Schneider is scheduled to undergo an MRI today.
“I really don’t know what to tell you,” Schneider said. “It didn’t feel like much on the ice, but it stiffened up on me. My skate just kind of stuck on the ice.”

Game On! Ducks and Kings Open the Pre-season

Thursday night marked the first game of the 2007 pre-season. the L.A. Kings defeating the Anaheim Ducks, 5-4.
Both teams’ starting goalies (Dan Cloutier and Ilya Bryzgalov) were pulled in the second period, between them letting in 7 goals on 28 shots. (So… NHL hockey is back, but—I dare say—great NHL hockey might take a while.)

Ducks Enter Camp Shorthanded

Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere said Thursday he expects to miss perhaps the first week of on-ice team drills while he completes recovery from Aug. 6 sports-hernia surgery. Iron-man center Samuel Pahlsson’s immediate future is even more uncertain after he underwent a similar procedure Wednesday in Philadelphia.
Giguere anticipates being ready for the club’s Sept. 29 NHL opener against the Kings in London, but Pahlsson’s club-record streak of 275 consecutive regular-season games played, the league’s seventh-longest current run, is in jeopardy.
“I’m coming along really well,” Giguere said. “The first three weeks, I couldn’t do much, but since then, I’ve been working out pretty hard, riding the bike and doing everything I need to do to get ready.
“I may start skating during the (next) week, but it’s going to be very easy skating. At worst, I’ll probably be a week behind everybody. We’ll just have to see how it goes.”
Just as Giguere experienced problems when he stepped up summer workouts, prescribed offseason rest was not enough to alleviate the abdominal pain that cost Pahlsson considerable practice time during last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
“He could have played through this, but it would have been a nagging injury,” general manager Brian Burke said. “The recovery time is 3-5 weeks. We anticipate that if he misses any regular-season time, it will be minimal.”
