Ryder Out With Facial Fracture

From Fluto Shinzawa of Bruins Blog at the Boston Globe:

Michael Ryder will not play today because of a facial fracture and is out indefinitely. Ryder was clipped by an Antoine Vermette high stick on Thursday. Ryder will be re-evaluated on Monday. Claude Julien said there is a possibility Ryder might require surgery, although Julien said the right wing’s eyesight is OK.

Update 1:38pm ET: From Bruins Insider at the Boston Herald --

“It’s a small fracture, so he’s out indefinitely. He’s going to be looked at again on Monday to see if he can play with a shield,” said coach Claude Julien.
The possibility of surgery cannot be ruled out, said Julien.
“It’s a shame,” said Julien. “When I say indefinitely, you hope it’s shorter rather than longer, but we’ll find out more here early in the week.”

Vermette Likely Done In Ottawa—UPDATED

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

Unless a deal was reached late last night or one gets struck some time this morning—very much a possibility, either way—Antoine Vermette (and/or agent Allan Walsh) will today stand before an arbitrator opposite Senators GM Bryan Murray (and/or another team representative) as both sides pitch their case in a contract dispute over the worth of the 26-year-old forward....

The belief here is that Murray, outraged at the way the Senators disappeared meekly from the 2007-08 campaign, is still determined to do what he can to give the team more of a facelift. The belief here is that he has tried and will continue to try to peddle Vermette for a grittier player and, not wanting to be the Lightning north, attempt to give his team at least one defenceman with some offensive talents.

The belief here is that no matter what happens today, Vermette won’t be a Senator by the time the season starts.

update 10:05am, via the Ottawa Sun,

Antoine Vermette has avoided arbitration, the Sun has learned.

Sources say the Senators centre agreed to a two-year, $5.525 million contract this morning. He will make $2.525 million next season and $3 million in 2009-10.

Decision Time For Vermette & Senators

from Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen,

The Ottawa Senators and Antoine Vermette are one day away from having their differences over a new contract resolved for them.

Unless they come to an agreement on their own before tomorrow’s arbitration hearing in Toronto, they’ll present their arguments and then nervously wait for the arbitrator’s decision.

If the Senators don’t like the decison, they can exercise their right to “walk away,” but that would allow Vermette, 26, to become an unrestricted free agent. General manager Bryan Murray would be loath to lose such a young, promising player for nothing.

Vermette’s name has also been mentioned in a number of trade rumours, including swaps with Toronto (for Pavel Kubina), Vancouver (Ryan Kesler or Sami Salo), Chicago, Columbus and Florida.

Running Out of Money

From Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun,

That means Ottawa only has $9.8 million left to sign winger Antoine Vermette and defenceman Andrej Meszaros while it searches for a second-line winger and a puck-moving defenceman.

The Senators usually like to keep $1 million for injuries or a possible move at the trade deadline, so Murray is in a bit of a pickle as he awaits Vermette’s arbitration case.

A league executive predicted yesterday that based on Vermette’s 24 goals and 29 assists last season, he’ll probably be awarded around $3.5 million in arbitration. The executive said the $3.75-million average salary R.J. Umberger, who had 13 goals and 37 assists last season, recently signed for with Columbus is a good comparison.

Senators Free Agency Challenges

From Ken Warren at Canwest News via the National Post,

The club already has $32.3 million US locked up in the ‘08-09 salaries of Heatley, Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher, Martin Gerber and Chris Phillips.

The Senators must re-sign restricted free agents Antoine Vermette and Andrej Meszaros, while also contemplating whether to re-sign unrestricted-free-agent centre Cory Stillman, winger Shean Donovan and defenceman Mike Commodore, or any other player who may become available on July 1.

Commodore, for one, wants to know who the club’s new coach is before weighing his options on whether to return.
