Wheeler On Pace For Bonuses

...there’s a good chance that if Wheeler (11-9 -20, plus-19 in 33 games) continues to produce at his current rate, he’ll earn some extra cash to tack onto his $875,000 base pay.
Wheeler is in line to hit three $212,500 Individual A bonuses: scoring at least 20 goals, finishing among the top three Bruins in plus-minus, and making the All-Rookie Team. Wheeler is on pace to score 27 goals. He is second on the team in plus-minus, trailing only Marc Savard (plus-20). Among rookies, Wheeler is tied with Toronto’s Mikhail Grabovski with 20 points, trailing Columbus’s Derick Brassard (25), Chicago’s Kris Versteeg (25), and St. Louis’s Patrik Berglund (21). Brassard dislocated his shoulder last Thursday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Wheeler Just Reacted On ‘Shorty’ Goal

(Blake) Wheeler had already scored a goal early in the first to give the Bruins the lead when he broke in with teammate Dave Krejci on Blues goaltender Manny Legace—or at least he thought. The University of Minnesota product ending up putting on a spin-o-rama move to notch his 11th of the season.
“I initially was looking to make a pass back to Krejci,” Wheeler said. “He kind of abandoned me. He went off for a change and the only thing I could do was react. There was a guy coming at me and I just kind of reacted. I got lucky.”

Wheeler A Key To Bruins Success

(Blake) Wheeler and linemates David Krejci and Michael Ryder have combined to be the Bruins’ most dangerous offensive threesome of late. Wheeler has a goal in each of the last two wins. Krejci has at least 1 point in the last six games. Ryder potted two goals against the Islanders and added two assists against Detroit.
All of that production comes with a rookie playing an unfamiliar position.
Before this season, Wheeler had played mostly center and right wing. But with the Bruins having less depth on the left side, they auditioned the righthanded-shooting Wheeler on his off wing during training camp. Coaches and management liked what they saw and have shown no hesitation in showcasing the rookie as a left wing during the recent hot streak.
“I think it gives us a little more luxury in moving guys around,” coach Claude Julien said. “At the beginning of the year, the question mark was whether we were going to keep him and where we were going to play him.

Blake Wheeler Finally Having an Impact

The fact Wheeler finally made the NHL four years later and is having an impressive offensive impact (six goals and eight points in 13 games with Boston) says a lot about the Coyote scouts who insisted the team take him in the No. 5 spot.
“The kid is going to be a star,” Phoenix hockey operations vice-president Dave Draper said after the 2004 draft. “Sometimes you have to pay a higher price than you’d like or what people would think, but we think we have a real gem.”

Blake Wheeler, the highly-sought winger from the University of Minnesota, has advised his agent to finalize terms of a contract with the Bruins, a two-year deal that won’t be made official until July 1, in keeping with NHL bylaws that govern the movement and signing of unrestricted free agents.

Rangers Wooing Wheeler

The Rangers New York Rangers spent yesterday romancing a free agent right wing, and his name isn’t Jaromir Jagr.
Rather, even as No. 68 told The Post that he hasn’t spoken to general manager Glen Sather since the May 6, post-elimination breakup day, the Blueshirts were attempting to entice 21-year-old Blake Wheeler into signing an Entry Level deal with the club.
Wheeler was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004 and recently turned down their offer of an entry-level contract at the maximum allowable salary.

Wheeler Goes UFA Route

– Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that Blake Wheeler, selected by the Coyotes in the 2004 Entry Draft, has rejected the Coyotes contract offer and will become an unrestricted free agent.
“We offered Blake a contract which was both commensurate with his draft position and far exceeded any guaranteed contract he can receive, under the current CBA, with any other team,” said Maloney. “He has decided, however, that becoming a free agent is in his best interest.
“We are very happy with the compensatory pick we will receive for Blake not signing, which will be the fifth pick in the second round. This is a very deep draft and we now have five picks in the first two rounds, which is very exciting.”
