Two weeks into this fledgling NHL season and it’s like being told you’ve just won a month’s vacation in Tahiti - with Louise Harel.
You don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
If you’re a partisan of Les Habitants, you want to weep.
But if you also happen to hate the Maple Leafs, you’re collapsing in hysterical giggles every time someone hits the punch line: “Brian Burke.”
As this tale of two cities unfolds (and it’s important to remember that the season is still so young it has to be burped after every game) the rapidly eroding fortunes of the Leafs and Habs are a big part of the early-season story line.

Gainey Calls Out Tampa Bay GM Lawton

Montreal Canadiens general-manager Bob Gainey has lashed out at Tampa Bay Lightning counterpart Bryan Lawton and the team’s ownership for “disgraceful” behaviour in leaking names they were interested in during trade talks for superstar centre Vincent Lecavalier.
Gainey said the wild speculation over Lecavalier, a Montreal native, was a significant distraction that helped derail his team in the second half of the season.

Gainey Goes In Silent Mode

A regular game day for the coach of the Montreal Canadiens consists of two separate media availabilities. The first comes after the team skates, and is open to everyone. Gainey sits behind a table and answers questions in both English and French. Sometimes, it takes more than 20 minutes, with two languages, close to 50 reporters and plenty of interest.
According to another journalist, today’s lasted 3:09 - which has to be some kind of record. He wouldn’t reveal his starting goalie, wouldn’t talk about his lineup. He told everyone to “watch the warmup” - which comes 30 minutes before puck drop.
The second briefing is for rights holders only, about two hours before game time. It’s a longer process for the coach of the Canadiens than anyone else in the league. First, you do RDS, the French TV broadcaster. I’m not sure what happens behind that door, but there are about 400 people in the room with him.
Then, it’s back-to-back tapings with CKAC (French radio) and CJAD (English radio). After that, we usually get a couple of minutes to chat.

Gainey May Be Done In Montreal

The Canadiens hit the iceberg this season, with Gainey’s reputation ripped apart like the Titanic’s hull. It’s as if 20-plus years of accomplishment have been wiped away by a province-wide case of amnesia.
And it’s why you can’t help but wonder if, win or lose (and it’s probably going to be the latter), Gainey walks away from the Canadiens once again. This time, for good.
It’s hard to make such a prediction with any certainty, because Gainey is the ultimate poker-face, someone who reveals little to even his closest confidants. (And, I am not one.) One person who is close to him told me in March that “it’s 50-50” the current coach/GM returns in 2009-10.
There is some of circumstantial evidence to suggest he won’t:
1) Gainey is clearly tired of the public scrutiny surrounding his hockey team, on and off the ice. One of his greatest strengths as both a player and an executive was the ability to keep calm in a maelstrom. There’ve been a few occasions this year where he’s snapped at questions, which is unusual for him.

...Thus Gainey punched Carbonneau’s ticket, complaining that the team has been emotionally disengaged in how they play the game. That’s sinful for the Habs. It was fatal for their coach.
Gainey must absolutely haul Montreal deep into the post-season or likely follow Carbonneau out the door.

Gainey Explains Coaching Move

In explaining why he fired his good friend, Guy Carbonneau, and has moved behind the Canadiens’ bench, general manager and now coach Bob Gainey said a change was needed after eight weeks of underachievement by the team.
In a 7 p.m. press conference at the Bell Centre, Gainey said he began to think about a coaching change on Saturday, after the Canadiens embarrassing loss to Atlanta on Friday night. He made the decision this morning, unswayed by watching the team beat Dallas.

There’s too much respect for Carbonneau for anyone inside the Montreal organization to pick at his carcass, but his firing with just 16 regular season games remaining came as no surprise to some, while others speculate Carbonneau’s firing may have been encouraged by ownership.

Lang Traded To Montreal

The Chicago Blackhawks today announced the team has acquired a second round draft choice in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft from the Montreal Canadiens (via the Toronto Maple Leafs) in exchange for center Robert Lang.
“Robert is a quality guy and we appreciate that he gave us everything that he had but this move gives one of our great young players an opportunity to step up,” Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon said. “We are excited about adding a second round draft pick in 2010 as we continue with our philosophy of building from within.”
Update 6:05pm ET (alanah): From the Habs --
Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the acquisition of forward Robert Lang from the Chicago Blackhawks, in return for a second-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from Toronto along with Greg Pateryn, in return for Mikhaïl Grabovski, July 3, 2008).
The Canadiens also re-signed Patrice Brisebois today for one more year.

Canadiens Sign Josh Gorges, 3 Year Deal

Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of defenseman Josh Gorges to a three-year contract (2008-09 to 2010-11). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Josh established himself as a key member of our defensive squad last season. His reliability and solid play made him one of our most improved players. He is a young defenseman with a very good work ethic,’’ said Bob Gainey.

The Complete Hockey Player

How would Gainey, the general manager, describe Gainey, the player?
“I was strong-willed,” he said. “I was extremely difficult to play against. Determined to carry my part of the team’s game to improve our chances to win the game. I enjoyed the harder parts of the games and the harder parts of the season.”
What he didn’t say was that no player before him, or since, delivered those qualities game in, game out for the length of his 16 seasons with the team, which included 1,160 regular-season games - eight as captain - and 182 playoff games, which brought home five Stanley Cups and the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1979.

Big Hit Followed By A Challenge To Fight

While speaking to Gainey recently about his rising star on defense, Mike Komisarek, I mentioned that the physical blueliner plays a rough and tumble game, yet doesn’t drop his gloves that often. Through 53 games, Komisarek had engaged in just four fights.
What bothers Gainey is the way Komisarek – and just about all NHLers, Gainey claims – is challenged to fight almost every time he dishes out a solid bodycheck.
“It’s goofy,” Gainey says.
That is an understatement.

Leafs & Canadiens Headed In Different Directions

But if the past is similar, the future looks entirely different for the two men and their teams, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.
“They both have mediocre current situations,” said one NHL executive, who wished to remain anonymous.
“But Ferguson put the Leafs in a situation where they have a terrible future and Gainey put the Canadiens in a situation where they have a great future.”
