Rolston Goes To Crosby For Ankle Advice

from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,

Brian Rolston’s ankle wasn’t feeling as good as he had hoped.

Three games into his return from a high ankle sprain, the Devils winger decided to get some firsthand information about what he might expect. So one week ago, after a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Rolston talked with Sidney Crosby.

“I don’t know if his was the same as mine, but his was an ankle, too. It was good to get a player’s perspective,” Rolston said. “The first few games back, no question I felt it. I didn’t know what to expect, so I had a conversation with Sidney Crosby. He just said it’s going to be sore and you have to try to strengthen it and to keep taping it.”

Rolston Injury Hurts Devils

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,

Hoping for the best, the Devils are more realistically bracing for the worst on Brian Rolston’s sprained right ankle.

“It depends how quickly he heals. It could be a few days, a few weeks, it could be a month. I don’t know,” coach Brent Sutter said yesterday about the Devils’ most expensive free-agent acquisition…

Rolston Out With Sprained Ankle

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils right wing Brian Rolston left tonight’s 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers with what he said was a high right ankle sprain.

Roslton left the building on crutches with a boot on his his right foot. I tried to ask Rolston twice if he had an X-ray on the ankle and both times was cut off by the Devils’ senior director of communications.

Rolston Will Go UFA

The Tampa Bay Lightning gave it their best shot, but forward Brian Rolston is going to unrestricted free agency.

Sources say Rolston informed the Lightning this morning that he would become an unrestricted free agent at 12 noon and see what the market will bear for his services.

Rolston Update

from Lightning Strikes,

Perhaps it was just posturing. Perhaps he just didn’t want to give anything away. Or maybe Brian Rolston is so committed to exploring his worth on the open market, the Lightning is going to have to work like crazy to get him signed.

Whatever the motivations, Rolston’s agent Stephen Bartlett played it close to the vest Monday afternoon when asked how negotiations were going with Tampa Bay.

“We’ve had some discussions,” he said.

Lightning Acquire Rights to Rolston

From the Minnesota Wild (press release):

Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough tonight announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired a conditional draft pick in either the 2009 or 2010 NHL Entry Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Brian Rolston.

Update 11:07pm ET: From Michael Russo at his Star Tribune blog,

The trade is done. It’s for a conditional draft pick with three different conditions apparently depending on whether Rolston signs with Tampa Bay or not. The conditions will be spelled out to me in a little bit.

Update 11:16pm ET: You can see the conditions for the pick at Russo’s site. They’re a bit (shall we say) convoluted, in part dependent on approval of the earlier Malone signing in Tampa.

Appears Rolston Headed Towards Free Agency

from John Shipley of the Pioneer Press,

The sides still have until midnight today (Monday) to complete a deal that would keep Rolston, 35, from testing the free-agent waters, but that isn’t going to happen.

“At this point,” Rolston said in a text message Sunday afternoon, “we are going to July 1.”

added 8:22pm, via Russo’s Rants,

I see Rolston on Sidney Crosby’s wing in Pittsburgh. I know Florida, Atlanta, the Rangers, Islanders and Montreal really want him, too. Tampa will sign Ryan Malone to a seven-year, $31.5 million deal, but that doesn’t mean the Lightning’s out of the Rolston hunt, I was just told. The Lightning has interest in Radim Vrbata, too.

Rolston Could Be A Good Fit In Montreal

from Mike Boone of Habs Inside/Out,

If the Canadiens end up blue-balled and spurned in their wooing of Mats Sundin, signing Brian Rolston would be a great consolation prize.

Rolston was in the final season of a three-year Minnesota Wild contract that paid him $2.432 million per. He’s probably available in the $4 million to $5 million range.

Rolston Could Be A Wanted Man

from Ryan Dixon of the Hockey News,

If free agents pitched their services on late-night infomercials, Brian Rolston would be positioned as the amazing all-in-one player who can take care of every household need before folding up compactly to be stored out of sight.

No fuss, no mess – just results.

Need a little defensive help? Put Rolston on the penalty kill and just look at that shine! So it’s offense you’re after? Good news; Rolston comes with a 30-goal guarantee!

Rolston Camp Silent

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

The Brian Rolston negotiations have literally stopped short.

According to Wild assistant general manager Tom Lynn, Rolston’s agent, Steve Bartlett, has not returned a phone call since last week. The Wild hoped it would jump-start negotiations Saturday by making it known publicly that the team had made three contract proposals to Rolston without receiving a counteroffer....

Via text message, Rolston said Wednesday there was “no news,” and Tuesday said, “I don’t think it’s over.” He declined to comment further.

Rolston Contract Negotiations Update

Now that the draft is over, get ready for more of these types of reports…

from Russo’s Rants,

Negotiations with the Wild’s Brian Rolston is at a sensitive juncture.

The Wild has grown frustrated with Rolston’s agent, Steve Bartlett. GM Doug Risebrough says the Wild has not received a single counteroffer from Bartlett.

Talks are in such danger of halting, the Wild has begun to receive and weigh offers from teams for the right to negotiate exclusively with Rolston, who can become a free agent July 1.

Rolston Looking For The Best Deal

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Brian Rolston made one thing crystal clear Wednesday night: While the three-time Wild 30-goal scorer still thinks he can get a deal done to finish his career in Minnesota, Rolston is not going to give the Wild a hometown discount because he wants to play in Minnesota.

“They made me a decent offer [Friday], but we’re not there yet,” Rolston, 35, said in a phone interview. “I’m looking for my market value. What is my market value? I don’t want to state it, but I think we have a good understanding of what it is.

Asst. Coach Rolston

from Kevin Allen’s blog at USA TODAY,

When Brian Rolston’s family heard that the Minnesota Wild were offering players a mother-son NHL road trip this season they jokingly wondered whether coach Jacques Lemaire understood that his mother, Joyce, might view that as an invitation to do some work as an assistant coach.

“She has a lot of jam,” jokes Brian’s brother, Ron, who is a coach for the U.S. National Development team. “We were afraid that she was going to be telling Jacques and the players how to play.”
