Barker Gets Another Chance In Edmonton

from Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun, Emotionless.
Too often, pointless. And finally, luckless.
Those are some of the words used to describe defenceman Cam Barker’s 2010-11 season with the Minnesota Wild.
After a lackluster start which left him sitting in the press box some nights, followed by an offensive dry spell that lasted longer than the one we just had, Barker finished his first full season in Minnesota with a bad back.
Not that many weeks ago, the Wild paid the Winnipegger to go away, buying out his contract in perhaps the ultimate indignation for the man chosen behind only Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin in the 2004 entry draft.
“It was an extremely tough year for me,” Barker, in town for the summer, was saying, Tuesday. “It just seemed like everything went wrong at once.”
This isn’t where the man’s career path was supposed to lead. Not after he put up 40 points with the Chicago Blackhawks two years earlier.

Options In Play For Cam Barker

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,
Wild defenseman Cam Barker cleared waivers this morning and was not immediately placed back on unconditional waivers.
However, the Wild can still place him on unconditional waivers by 11 a.m. CT Thursday and the buyout process can be enacted within the rules of the 4 p.m. Thursday first buyout period deadline.
So, in other words, Barker could still be put on unconditional waivers Thursday and still be bought out as long as he clears Friday at 11 a.m.—even though the buyout deadline is the day before.
GOT IT?
Also, after talking to a number of agents and NHL executives this morning, there are different strategies that could be in play here

Confusing Case of Chris Drury

From Jesse Spector at The Blueshirts Blog:
According to the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement, a player must clear waivers before he can be bought out of a contract. The process, though, is fraught with confusion, especially in the case of Rangers captain Chris Drury.
Drury did not go on waivers today, which apparently means the Rangers have one more chance tomorrow to make him available to the entire league if they intend to buy him out by Thursday’s deadline. I say apparently because of the case of the one player who did go on waivers today, Minnesota Wild defenseman Cam Barker.
According to a pair of tweets from Bob McKenzie of TSN, “Barker’s waiver price is $26,250. Can’t be bought out unless it’s a waiver price of $125. So this is the first pass to see if anyone wants him. If he clears tomorrow at noon, MIN would have to put him back on $125 waivers if they want to buy him out.”
Further to that, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune wrote, “(Wild GM Chuck) Fletcher won’t comment today, but the Wild will only say this doesn’t mean it’s definitely buying him out because he’s just on regular waivers.”
