Just How Long Has Chelios Been Around
by Paul on 09/05/08 at 12:10 PMComments (2)
from Ryan Dixon of the Hockey News,
Just as numbers alone could never sum up his on-ice contributions, to truly appreciate the span of Chelios’ career it must be set against the backdrop of a sporting and cultural timeline.
Consider the following:
• Chelios played his first season of Jr. A hockey (then known as Tier-II) with the Saskatchewan League’s Moose Jaw Canucks in 1979-80 at age 17. Jimmy Carter was the president of the United States, not a punch line on The Simpsons and The Beatles could have still held a reunion tour with Ringo, Paul, George and John.

“What they’ve done is just tremendous,” he said. “It has been a long time coming, where you felt that buzz. I can’t say I wish I was part of it right now because I’m a Red Wing, but it’s great to see the fans getting excited again about Blackhawk hockey.”
“I found a new home in Detroit, but Chicago is always going to be home,” he said. “I intend on coming back and spending the rest of my days here, whether as a player or somehow being involved with the Blackhawks.”

Chelios Close To Return
by Paul on 06/25/08 at 08:30 AMComments (1)
from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
“We had a real good talk about what I saw as his role,” Holland said. “He wants to come back for another year, so I would say we’re very close on a contract. The biggest thing was discussing his role—the contract is not an issue.
“It’ll be in the ballpark of what Chris made last year. We’re going to get something done. It’s just a matter of when and how much.”
Chelios, the NHL’s oldest player, made $850,000 this past season.

The Real Story of How the Wings Broke the Cup
by Alanah McGinley on 06/17/08 at 01:25 PMComments (18)
From James Duthie at The Good, The Bad and The Duthie,
Here’s what happened: Chris Chelios was atop the bar, Coyote Ugly style, Cup in hand, with the packed crowd cheering madly. At some point there was an attempted handoff to Brett Lebda. Whether it was the chaos of the crowd, or the…umm…content of the blood, balance was lost. Down went Lebda. Down went Stanley.
And no, the dent wasn’t “slight”.
In fact, it needed emergency service. Mike Bolt, the Keeper of the Cup, was taken to Joe Louis Arena, where Stan, like a forward who took a puck in the eye, was placed gently on the trainer’s table in the Red Wings dressing room, and operated on.
Decisions in Detroit

From George Sipple at the Free Press,
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will be on the golf links soon, but he has some business to take care of the next few days. Holland hopes to meet with goaltender Dominik Hasek and forward Dallas Drake to gauge their interest in returning next season before he leaves for Thursday’s NHL awards show in Toronto.
Holland also will talk with defenseman Chris Chelios, who needs to have his injured knee scoped in the off-season.
“I have every intention of coming back,” Chelios said. “It’s never been a money issue, so we’ll figure it out and hopefully we’ll be back in this stall again.”

Zetterberg the New Yzerman
by Alanah McGinley on 06/04/08 at 11:30 PMComments (0)
From Dave Waddell at Canwest via the National Post
Johan Franzen, also a Conn Smythe candidate, said people don’t realize how ultra competitive Zetterberg is even in off-ice pursuits.
“He’s one of a kind competing that hard in both ends,” Franzen said. “I can’t come up with anyone (comparable).”
Chris Chelios can.
The veteran defenceman said Zetterberg’s playoff performance reminded him very much of retired Wings captain Steve Yzerman.
“I’d have to think, but Yzerman is the only one,” Chelios said.

This post will be an open forum from the event, to add photos he sends in and links to audio he’ll be posting on NHL.com later today.
Updates will be added below throughout the day, with Wings stuff coming in first since the Penguins aren’t yet available. To start, I’ve put up a couple screenshots from video he’s shot today so far…

Not-So-Gentlemanly Behavior
by Alanah McGinley on 05/18/08 at 04:34 AMComments (0)
From Brian Christ at the ABQ Journal.com,
One of the most revered traditions in sports is the handshake ceremony after each Stanley Cup playoff series, when the bloodied warriors on each team line up to offer congratulations to their foes for a job well done. Sportsmanship at its greatest.
It’s just seems incomprehensible, though, how guys who had just been knocking the pus out of each other can all of a sudden start hobnobbing. For me, it’s not uncommon to hold a grudge against someone who takes 3 minutes to heat a pile of rice in the office microwave.
So, is this on-ice glad-handing genuine?

Clean Living Pays Off
by Alanah McGinley on 04/23/08 at 06:02 PMComments (0)
From Greg Beacham at the AP (via USA Today):
When Roenick postponed retirement for another Stanley Cup run, he also gave up alcohol for the year. Roenick doesn’t have a drinking problem, yet the 38-year-old forward partly credits his teetotaling for his remarkable resurgence this season, capped by a spectacular Game 7 that sent the Sharks onward to face the Dallas Stars in the second round.
“I think that has a lot to do with it - clean living and making sure that my body is fresh, that there’s no toxins in it,” said Roenick, who had two goals and two assists. “A healthy mind will create a healthy body, and the San Jose Sharks have allowed me to have a healthy mind. I haven’t felt this good in maybe 10 or 15 years, since I was a kid. I feel like I did when I played in Chicago, before Philly and Phoenix, way back when.”
On a similar topic, AskMen.com currently has a feature article on Chris Chelios online, looking at the customized workout routine that keeps him nearly “bulletproof” at the age of 45.

from Mlive,
The Red Wings are listing defenseman Chris Chelios as day-to-day with a contusion in his right leg and a small chip in his fibula, but say that he could be out for several days. Chelios, who was receiving treatment at General Motors Place in Vancouver Saturday morning, is walking with a limp and said he’s in a lot of pain.

Chris Chelios via the Detroit Free Press,
“I think our biggest issue ... is getting some more exposure to our game, and I think we just signed a three-year deal with Versus. ... We need a better TV contract, more exposure on TV, and we’re not getting that. It’s not going to hurt for a team to go over to Europe for some of the stars to be seen over there. But our problem is in the U.S., selling buildings out and exposing the game.”

Chelios States Rob Blake Would Love To Play For Detroit
by Paul on 01/18/08 at 08:44 AMComments (4)
via Snapshots,
Chelios also talks trade possibilities, saying that he thinks a defenseman would help the team most. His defenseman of choice? Rob Blake of the Los Angeles Kings. “He’s in a situation there where there’s just no end at the light of the tunnel and he’s lost his drive right now,” Chelios says of Blake. “I’ve been there. I talked to him last time we played him, and he would love to come here.”

Age Is The Only Difference
by Paul on 12/14/07 at 08:18 PMComments (1)
from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
They’ve made no friends in enemy uniforms and yet both men willingly put their careers and reputations on the line for their National Hockey League brothers.
Last year, Chelios took on NHLPA executive director Ted Saskin, accusing him of using unfair practices to gain the spot as the man in charge of the association.
Saskin was ultimately forced to resign and Paul Kelly recently replaced him.
A half century ago, Lindsay led the players in revolt against the owners, seeking to form a players’ association to fight against unfair practices implemented by NHL owners.
Linden vs Chelios
by Alanah McGinley on 10/29/07 at 12:47 AMComments (1)
From Iain Macintyre at the Vancouver Sun,
Eleven years ago, when the Vancouver Canucks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in overtime, Trevor Linden got into Chris Chelios’s face after the winning goal and the pair tussled.
Chelios threw the first punch and, after the players were separated, accused Linden of covering up and refusing to fight. And that was the high point of their relationship. It has devolved the last two years as Chelios leads his crusade for justice within a National Hockey League Players’ Association that Linden, as the union’s former president, led through a labour war that scuttled the 2004-05 season.
Sunday, Linden seemed ready for the fight.
“It’s easy to pile on,” Linden said before facing Chelios and the Detroit Red Wings Sunday night at GM Place. “I will say this: I’m extremely proud of the decisions the [NHLPA] executive committee made. I think we made, in very difficult times, good decisions for the players.”

History Repeats According To Chelios
by Paul on 10/24/07 at 09:07 PMComments (0)
from the Detroit Free Press,
“I’m very happy with our choice of Paul Kelly. I’m looking forward to working with him and having him represent us as a union. At least we have a leader now, and we’ll look for direction from him.”
Chelios said Kelly’s arrival was reminiscent of Goodenow taking over in 1992 for the disgraced Alan Eagleson.
“I look back,” Chelios said, “and it was the same thing when we hired Bob Goodenow — we’d gone through a lot in the Eagleson era, and then Bob was hired — pretty much same situation, basically. It’s history repeating itself. Look at what he did for us. Hopefully, Paul Kelly can follow that same path that we did with Bob.”
Meehan Issues “Notices of Libel”
by Paul on 10/23/07 at 03:56 PMComments (3)
from TSN,
Lawyers representing Toronto-based player agent Don Meehan have issued ‘’notices of libel’’ against Detroit Red Wing player Chris Chelios and an unspecified number of media outlets.
‘’We have sent out notices alleging libel to Mr. Chelios and various media,’’ said Meehan’s lawyer, Graham Smith of Goodman’s law firm in Toronto.
added 6:08pm, from the Hockey News,
Chelios said after learning the news Tuesday afternoon that he was misquoted and has “accused Don Meehan of nothing.
“It was always, ‘If he undermined the union’ and ‘If he acted inappropriately,’ “ Chelios said. “If there was any miscommunication in my quotes…I haven’t accused him of anything and I spoke to (the reporter) from the Free Press about it. He hasn’t been accused of anything by me.”
Chelios Responds
by Paul on 10/15/07 at 09:45 PMComments (3)
from the Detroit Free Press,
Never one to soften his words, Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios delivered a simple message to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Monday.
“I can’t believe my good friend Gary would want to leave me in Russia,” Chelios said, and it must be noted the “good friend” was deeply sarcastic. “I’d like to have a private talk with Gary one of these days, see what he means.”
Chelios was referring to the latest turn of events in the soap opera that debuted in the aftermath of the 2004-05 NHL lockout, starring Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and former NHL Players’ Association boss Ted Saskin.
The Cheli Workout
by Paul on 09/11/07 at 12:37 PMComments (4)
from Sports Illustrated,
Forty-five-year-old Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios came to training camp this week as the NHL’s oldest player, but, says his trainer T.R. Goodman, “he has the body of a 30-year-old.” This summer, six days a week, Chelios hit Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, Calif., where Goodman, a former college hockey player, trains more than 20 NHL players.
