A Different Role For Drury

The personnel is different this year, so is the head coach, and so is the role that Chris Drury has been assigned to fill on a Rangers team that brought an 8-3-1 record into last night’s match against the Islanders at the Coliseum.

For no longer is Drury in a top-six offensive position up front, skating now as he does as the third-line center. No longer is Drury, who scored 55 of his 114 goals on the power play the last four seasons, on that specialty unit.

“The minutes certainly aren’t as sexy as I’ve been accustomed to getting over the years,” Drury, who is averaging just 50 seconds of power-play time per game after getting an average of 3:34 last year and 3:57 his first year on Broadway, told The Post yesterday morning.

“The minutes I’m getting now are on the penalty kill and in more defensive situations, such as the shift after a goal is scored when keeping or changing the momentum is so important. Those are critical portions of the game, so I’m certainly approaching this as if I have an important role to fill for this team.”

Drury Prepared For Home Run Derby Competition

Drury, now the New York Rangers’ captain, has been bugging Martin for more details about the Aug. 8 Home Run Derby that will be part of the upcoming 20th reunion weekend for the 1989 Little League World Series championship team from Trumbull, Conn.

“Chris is very excited,” Martin said. “I think he’s already at the batting cages every day. His work ethic always has been part of his story in the NHL and apparently it doesn’t matter if it’s whiffle ball or Home Run Derby, he catches that same vigor.”

Martin laughed and added, “He’s a nut job. He calls me every day with questions. If anybody’s going to be ready to go, it’s him.”

Drury Played With Broken Hand

When the series ended, when the Rangers went through the handshake line following last night’s 2-1 Game 7 defeat, Chris Drury used his left hand to congratulate the Capitals.

That’s because, as he told The Post, the captain had played the first round with a broken right hand he sustained late in the April 9 victory over the Flyers in the Garden finale that clinched a playoff berth.

Dreaming Of Drury

Here’s one thing I’m hearing from people in the know: The Rangers are so intent on getting Mats Sundin that they may well trade Chris Drury to make room. The Rangers will need to clear some significant salary to allow for Mats’ inclusion, and Drury has three more years and $21.5 million left on his contract after this season.

But he also has a no-movement clause to his deal, meaning any kind of trade or demotion to the minors or put through the waiver wire would need his approval first....

The Avs have roughly five million in cap space right now - partly because of Joe Sakic’s long-term injury. So maybe if you get a Drury to waive his no-movement clause to come to Colorado and get the Rangers to pay half his salary this year after going through re-entry waivers, you could fit him in - although you’d probably have to move more salary too.

Of the few teams Drury would consider playing for, I’m sure the Avs would be one of them.

Drury Struggling

Heading into tomorrow’s game in Columbus, the 32-year-old captain is very much struggling. Drury’s managed a not-so-grand total of one point this year, thanks to paltry stats of no goals and one assist

“I’m getting there. Nothing’s really clicking too good right now,” Drury said after practice on Tuesday. “But obviously importantly our record is pretty darn good and that’s what this is all about.

NY Rangers Expect Drury Back Tonight

Chris Drury is in pain with what is thought to be bruised ribs but the New York Rangers centre expects to play Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

But the Rangers will be missing checking centre Blair Betts and winger Sean Avery when they try to avoid elimination from the NHL playoffs Tuesday night at the hands of the Penguins. The Penguins lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final 3-0.

Drury Time

Last night at the Rock, the clock was tick-tick-ticking away on the game and, in essence, on whatever chance the Rangers New York Rangers were going to have at making a dash down the stretch to capture the East title.

It was 1-0 Devils with fewer than five minutes to go in third, just as it had been 1-0 Devils from the 6:05 mark of the first.

In other words, Drury Time.

Time for the Big Moment Kid.

Drury Sees Old Friend in Boston

The Bruins held Travis Roy Day to help Roy’s foundation raise money to help victims of spinal cord injuries. Roy was paralyzed in his first shift as a freshman at Boston University in 1995. One of his teammates was Rangers center Chris Drury, who has stayed close to Roy. Before the game, Drury met Roy outside the Rangers’ locker room and leaned down to give him a hug and hugged him again when Roy dropped the ceremonial first puck. “Chris is such a great guy,” Roy said. “He’s always been there, supporting me. It’s so fun to watch him succeed.”

The Bruins donated $100,000 to Roy’s foundation yesterday.  More about Travis Roy fundraiser available at Boston Bruins.com or on the foundation’s website.
