Cuddling with the Cup
by Alanah McGinley on 08/06/08 at 01:17 PMComments (1)
From the HHOF Stanley Cup Journal:
After being part of a boating convoy with the Wings’ GM, the Cup spent the night at the Osgood home with Chris and his wife Jenna. Curious readers of the Stanley Cup Journal know that the Keepers of the Cup accompany hockey’s most cherished trophy wherever it goes, and wonder what happens when players want to sleep with the Cup. “I tell them, ‘Move over,’” laughs Mike Bolt, one of the Cup’s Keepers.
Wings Could Win In Different Ways
by Paul on 07/18/08 at 04:14 PMComments (0)
from the Vernon Morning Star,
Supported by an awesome top-four defensive core and forwards who are committed to blocking shots and picking up their checks, Osgood noted one major difference from the ‘97 team he backstopped.
“They’re both great teams. Our team this year was just a tenacious team. We never really get rattled anymore. We played our game-plan and our style of play. This team could win games in different ways than other teams did. We could win in the trenches, 2-1 games, a tough, ugly game that we couldn’t before.
“That’s the difference. We were able to win the ugly games and the physical in-the-trenches games like maybe before we couldn’t. That’s why we won, we were capable of winning any way the other team wanted to play.”

What A Host
by Paul on 06/30/08 at 07:16 AMComments (0)
from the Detroit Free Press,
Word spread quickly on the street that the Cup and Osgood were inside the Irish pub. Lines formed outside 821 Penniman Avenue to get a glimpse of North America’s oldest professional sports trophy, which is made of silver and nickel alloy.
And once you gained entrance inside O’Callaghan’s, it was pure bedlam.
“Oh, my God, I just drank out of the Stanley Cup,’’ said one female patron as she exited the bar.
While patrons poured their alcoholic beverages into the Cup for a chance at a celebratory swig, Osgood patiently accommodated, hunched over and standing on top of the bar, while pouring the bulky 34-pound trophy.

Osgood’s Secret
by Alanah McGinley on 06/12/08 at 02:33 PMComments (2)
Slow news day for the moment as the NHL’s mainstream press enjoys their 3-martini lunches in Toronto before tonight’s fun.
Meanwhile, The Onion takes over:
LOS ANGELES—Sources within the Red Wings organization confirm that goalie Chris Osgood, who is currently engaged in accompanying the Stanley Cup on a victory tour of talk shows and publicity events, has repeatedly and insistently claimed to have gotten as far as third base with hockey’s championship trophy during the past week.

Wings Bring Sexy Back
by Alanah McGinley on 06/11/08 at 09:00 AMComments (15)
From Steve Schrader at the Free Press:
[Jay] Leno also asked if Timberlake taught them anything in return for the hockey lessons.
And the Wings launched into Timberlake’s tune “SexyBack,” singing “we’re bringing sexy back” once and then switching to “we’re bringing Stanley back.”

A Hockey Dad’s Relief
by Alanah McGinley on 06/11/08 at 08:53 AMComments (0)
From Robin Collum in the Edmonton Journal, the words of John Osgood:
“I’m a hockey dad, so I know it’s a 60-minute game, and I knew that in Detroit in Game 5 when they scored in the last minute to extend the series.
“So in the last minute in Pittsburgh when it was 3-2 and everybody was up cheering, I was sitting. I was watching the screen, and it was 5.2 seconds left, and the puck was at centre ice, so I risked standing up and starting to celebrate,” he said. “Then, all of a sudden, it’s a two-one-one down low, Crosby’s got the backhand, Hossa’s got the puck and throws it through the crease.
“But it worked out and it was so emotional, but a sense of relief, too, that it was over. I think I was more nervous than Chris was.”

Backing Up Osgood
by Alanah McGinley on 06/10/08 at 08:57 AMComments (1)
From Ansar Khan at MLive,
“I think Jimmy Howard is very close, if not there, to playing in the NHL,” Holland said. “I’m guessing Ozzie can play 50 games, maybe more. The 20-30 games that Chris doesn’t play in a parity league, those are key points. The hardest thing is, we’re trying to continue to be a Cup contender. How do you move young people into your team at a key position?”
Even if the Red Wings anticipate Howard being the backup, they are likely to pursue a low-priced, experienced goalie, in the wake of Dominik Hasek’s retirement.

Osgood on the Red Carpet
by Alanah McGinley on 06/09/08 at 06:01 PMComments (0)
From Mike Itchue at MLive.com:
Chris Osgood joined The Stoney and Wojo show on WDFN (1130 AM Detroit) Monday afternoon to share stories of his weekend adventures with the Stanley Cup and talk about upcoming appearances.
Osgood and Nicklas Lidstrom will appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tuesday, and Osgood will also walk the Cup down the red carpet at the premiere of the Mike Myers movie “The Love Guru,” which has a hockey theme.
“That is one thing I’m nervous about,” Osgood said of his red carpet walk.

Team Comes First
by Alanah McGinley on 06/07/08 at 02:00 PMComments (0)
From Helene St. James at the Free Press,
“I think what’s passed down from a lot of Hall of Famers that have played here, what is passed on to Nick Lidstrom and Drapes, and it will be passed on to the next guys, that is what made the difference for us in Game 6,” Osgood said. “I think that’s underestimated. Those guys told us how to handle this, how to handle it after we lost in overtime in Game 5, and now we can tell the Darren Helms and the Nik Kronwalls.
“I truly think we win because we’re more of a team, from the guys who retired to the guys who are still playing, than anywhere else. If Pavel Datsyuk is leading the league in scoring, Henrik Zetterberg is not mad about it. Steve Yzerman taught us all how to be team players and play for the other guy.”

Osgood for the HHOF?
by Alanah McGinley on 06/05/08 at 11:48 AMComments (13)
From Jason Kay at The Hockey News,
A few months ago – heck, even a few weeks ago – the notion seemed ludicrous: Chris Osgood for the Hall of Fame?
Some of you may even be shaking your heads and/or laughing right now.
But with the specs for his third Stanley Cup ring about to be sent to the jeweler, the question begs asking.
THN presents all the arguments. Read ‘em and vote.
Feel-Good Story of the Playoffs
by Alanah McGinley on 06/04/08 at 11:25 PMComments (0)
From the CP via TSN,
Undervalued. Underappreciated. Whatever, Osgood has always been considered merely an average NHL goalie, but he proved this spring that he’s more than that - although it seems, whatever he accomplishes, he’ll never convince everybody. That’s just the way it is with some athletes.
Some will say any goalie would look good behind the best defence in the NHL. With five-time Norris Trophy winner Nick Lidstrom anchoring the blue-line corps, and with Selke Trophy finalists Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk headlining a cast of forwards who forecheck and backcheck like no others, Osgood had to face an average of only about 22 shots a game.
Regardless, nobody can deny that Osgood is one of the feel-good stories of the post-season.
Tuesday with Osgood, Draper, Rafalski & Lidstrom
by Alanah McGinley on 06/03/08 at 06:11 PMComments (0)
Q. Chris, could you talk about the mood of the team, maybe compare it as it is right now as to maybe immediately following the end of last night’s game?
CHRIS OSGOOD: We were all right after the game. We played hard. It was another great game. We just fell in the wrong end. That’s the way we looked at it. It was an end to end game. We had plenty of chances. It just didn’t happen. Sometimes it’s a game of bounces. It didn’t go our way, but we managed to fight back.
It didn’t happen. We have another opportunity tomorrow night, and that’s what we’re looking forward to.

Osgood Ditches Media
by Alanah McGinley on 06/03/08 at 12:58 PMComments (2)
From Drew Sharp at the Free Press,
Nobody felt the drastic shift in emotions Monday night worse than Osgood. He surrendered a power play goal midway through the third overtime, giving the gritty Penguins a 4-3 Game 5 victory.
“We wouldn’t be in this position if not for Ozzie,” said Brian Rafalski. “We had an opportunity to close it out, but it just proves that the game is 60 minutes long not 59 minutes long. It was one of those games that just didn’t want to end.”
Many came to Osgood’s defense.
He was nowhere to be found nearly an hour following the game.
Evolution of Chris Osgood
by Alanah McGinley on 06/02/08 at 02:06 PMComments (0)
From Scott Burnside at ESPN,
“When you’re young, you tend to take things too personal, and it’s really not. You tend to exaggerate things,” Osgood told ESPN.com on the eve of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals, with Detroit holding a 3-1 series lead over Pittsburgh. “People write stuff, all people have different jobs when you’re in the finals and in the playoffs.
“You just have to have fun with it. I enjoy talking to the media more and talking to people, getting to know more people. Just have more fun with it because it’s not personal. Just everybody’s doing their job. It’s fun. ... It’s when I get on the ice, it’s just my time.”
The 35-year-old native of Peace River, Alberta, is not the same goaltender he was 10 years ago, when he helped Detroit win a Stanley Cup but carried a rather sizable chip on his shoulder. But who among us can claim to be the same person now as a decade ago?
Post-Game #4—Zetterberg, Lidstrom & Osgood
by Alanah McGinley on 05/31/08 at 11:34 PMComments (0)
11:50pm ET: Updated below with some comments from Chris Osgood added.
Q. Henrik, can you describe just in general your defense tonight and specifically your defense on the five‑on‑three?
HENRIK ZETTERBERG: That was the one thing we wanted to do a little better today. We want to have a little bit more poise in our own end.
We wanted to make some good decisions down there. I think we did. They got opportunity to tie up the game with the five‑on‑three in the end there.
We played good. We tried to keep them outside and tried to be in the shooting lanes. And when they got a puck through, Ozzie made a save.

Hasek Being a Good Teammate
by Alanah McGinley on 05/31/08 at 01:17 PMComments (0)
From Pierre LeBrun at the CP via Yahoo!
Dominik Hasek will enter the Hall in his very first year of eligibility. But right now, he’s been reduced to Hall of Fame backup.
“That’s the way it is,” Hasek said. “It’s definitely disappointing, especially because I feel well. Like I’ve said many times, I’m ready to go any time. But the team is playing very well, we’re winning. Ozzie is doing a great job for us. So I understand the situation. I wish to be there but the coaches feel they better go with Ozzie.”
And that’s a pure, honest sentiment from the 43-year-old Czech star. It’s eating him up inside not to be in goal right now. But he also has tremendous respect for his goalie partner and has been nothing but the good teammate since losing his starting job 26 minutes into Game 4 of the opening round in Nashville.
Thursday with Osgood and Draper (Updated)
by Alanah McGinley on 05/29/08 at 12:29 PMComments (0)
Update 1:11pm ET: Added another interview to this post. Below you’ll find words from Niklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg.
Q. Chris, this week all your teammates and coaches have been saying that your ability to bounce back from losses or bad goals and things like that is really one of your strengths. How do you do that so easily, and last night is a game that’s easier or tougher to get past?
CHRIS OSGOOD: It’s over. We didn’t come into the series thinking we were going to win four straight. We were hoping to. But to say we expected it to be a hard series would be right on. Just play the game tomorrow. I mean, the next day, just keep doing the same thing as I’ve been doing. That’s about it. I haven’t really put any thought into last night, this morning.
I thought it was a real good game. Both teams played real well, and somebody has to win and lose every night. We were on the short end last night.
Q. If I could get you both to comment on this. Mike Babcock came in this morning, the morning after a loss, jovial with the media and joking. Can you talk about the way he kind of sets the mood for the team and kind of understands when to go at you and when to give you your space and how his feelings for that kind of thing?

The Normal Goalie
by Paul on 05/28/08 at 08:23 AMComments (0)
from Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Chris Osgood doesn’t like to talk about himself.
And he’ll be the first to tell you that.
“I’m just a quiet guy. I don’t like bragging about myself. Save that for another day,” said the Detroit goaltender, who, if he keeps making all the saves, won’t have a lot more days to wait this postseason.

Osgood Just Wins
by Paul on 05/22/08 at 07:15 AMComments (0)
from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
Chris Osgood has been labelled the worst goaltender to ever win a Stanley Cup.
Now, he could conceivably be the worst to ever win two.
Before we all get all weepy over Osgood’s legacy, or suggest he’s been unfairly criticized and evaluated over the course of his career, a little historical review would be in order.
Playoff Justice
by Alanah McGinley on 05/12/08 at 04:38 PMComments (1)
From Al Strachan at FoxSports,
This is NHL playoff justice. Anything short of an ax-murder is likely to be ignored. But don’t blame the current dispenser of justice, Colin Campbell. It has always been this way.
There has been the occasional exception. When Gary Bettman was in the first few months of his regime, he didn’t understand hockey tradition very well (insert your own cheap shot here) and seeing Dale Hunter deliver a cross-check to Pierre Turgeon after a goal, decided that Hunter had earned himself a 21-game suspension.
But since then, the NHL has followed a firm policy. First of all, suspensions, when they occur, are much shorter than they would be for a similar incident in the regular season. Secondly, every effort is made to keep the stars in the game.
At one time, the league used to defer playoff suspensions. One of the more notorious examples was the vicious slash that Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall delivered to Edmonton’s Kent Nilsson in the 1987 Stanley Cup finals.

No Suspensions For Ribeiro & Osgood
by Paul on 05/11/08 at 07:02 PMComments (1)
via Mike Heika of Dallas Stars Blog at the Dallas Morning News,
The league just confirmed.
There are some fines involved, but both Ribeiro and Osgood are good to go for Game 3.
That’s important for the Stars, particularly if Lehtinen is hurt and can’t play.
Ribeiro was quite feisty today, so it will be interesting if he transfers that energy to the ice.
added 7:07pm, Sorry for the back to back posts on this topic. At least we used different sources!
All Osgood Does Is Win
by Paul on 05/11/08 at 02:06 PMComments (1)
from John Kreiser of NHL.com,
Chris Osgood doesn’t have the flash of Detroit teammate Dominik Hasek. He’s not a spectacular puck-handler like Dallas’ Marty Turco, his rival in the Western Conference Finals. He’s a solid goaltender who doesn’t do anything extraordinarily well.
Except win.
Few goaltenders in any era can match Osgood when it comes to winning games. He was 27-9-4 during the regular season while splitting time with Hasek, and improved to 8-0 during the playoffs with a 2-1 victory over the Stars Saturday night in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
Questions for Lidstrom, Franzen and Osgood
by Alanah McGinley on 05/07/08 at 02:49 PMComments (1)
A short Q&A session with the media, talking with Detroit Red Wings players Nicklas Lidstrom, Johan Franzen and Chris Osgood.
Q. Chris, 6?0 an incredible run here in the playoffs. Where do you point the finger? Why have you had such success?
CHRIS OSGOOD: In two parts I’ll answer. Personally, just doing the right things in practice with Jim Bedard and staying ready. Even when I wasn’t playing, I felt confident, even before I went in that I could do the job. Just being ready so I wasn’t standing there doubting myself whatsoever.

Osgood Rebuilds His Game
by Paul on 04/28/08 at 07:53 PMComments (2)
from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star via the National Post,
Windsor native Stan Matwijiw operates the Bandits Goalie School in Novi, Mich., and back in 2004, was charged with the task of deconstructing Osgood.
It proved to be a reclamation project of Humpty Dumpty-like proportions.
“I got a call from Chris the second week of August the summer before the (2004-05) lockout,” Matwijiw recalled. “When he first came to me, I was a little unsure about what he was looking for.
“This was an NHL goalie with 11 years of experience. I didn’t know whether he was just looking to fine-tune some things, so we talked about it. To my surprise, he said, ‘I want you to completely tear my game apart and rebuild it.”
