Oh Huet

Great Swiss sieves from past include Marty Gerber, Tobias Stephan - and now the Struggling Swiss-Franc, Mr. Huet. All of them graduates of the Equipment-Cheat, Fall-On-Your-Knees School of Swiss Netminder Capitulation.
I’ll admit I let in some bad goals in my time, and I’ve witnessed some goose-down soft tallies covering the National League of Hockey with my eyeballs and throat, but I have never been privy to a more “WTF Were You Doing?” goal than Stephane Robidas eventual game winner that bewildered Huet and devistated the Hawk Nation in Chicago last night.
I’m on the flight back home trying to figure out how a $5M goalie can let a puck shot from center, that was aimed 40 feet wide of the net, and hit a glass support, bounced twice, was then headed in front of the goal to the other corner, get past him.

Another Bad Night For Huet

On a night when the Hawks dominated much of the game offensively, Huet allowed 2 deflating goals, including one that needed to be seen to be believed.
With the Hawks trailing 3-2 midway through the third period, Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas fired one from inside the red line around the glass that deflected toward the goal, bounced and hopped into the net between Huet and the post.
Huet also let Toby Petersen beat him with a slap shot from past the right circle near the boards in the second period that rang down the boos from the sellout crowd.
“I can blame only myself,” Huet said. “The third goal (by Petersen) is bad. It can’t happen. Right now I feel bad because I feel I let the team down. I know I can play way better than that.
“Obviously, I really looked bad tonight and I didn’t help the team.”

Huet Needs A Win Tonight

Huet is expected to start tonight in Nashville, the hockey equivalent of playing the Rams. They have seven goals all season, three by one guy. They’re coming off a 6-0 whipping by Dallas. Jeez, Nashville is the kind of team where forwards volunteer to play goal.
So, this is a must-win for Huet. This is a better-win. You shouldn’t give up a goal to these mopes. But more importantly, win the game so the coach, your teammates and the fans can at least fake some confidence in you. Because if you lose in Nashville, mon ami, stay there. ...

Shaky Starts For Huet

It’s way too early to give up on Cristobal Huet less than two weeks into the season.
But the clock is ticking.
Huet has made four starts and been shaky in all of them. His exit seven minutes into Monday’s game against Calgary after he allowed 3 goals on 5 shots was the right move by Hawks coach Joel Quenneville even if the defensive play in front of the goalie was shoddy.
It’s a goalie’s job to come up with big saves after defensive breakdowns, especially the goalie on a team that’s supposed to contend for the Stanley Cup.

Do You Believe In Huet?

The Blackhawks, even as they emerge as paper tigers among the NHL elite, will nonetheless be on trial next weekend at their fan convention.
As promising as their future appears for 2009-10, especially with the addition of high-scoring forward Marian Hossa, they will be asked to present indisputable evidence that shows Cristobal Huet is their No. 1 goaltender beyond a reasonable doubt.
Can that case be proven in a weekend of salesmanship? Was Huet worth 4 years at $5.625 million when the Hawks signed him as a free agent in July, 2008? Will you go home from the festivities next Sunday convinced that the net is in the hands of a master goaltender or a never-will-be?

Chicago Trying To Move Huet

It was clear late Tuesday night that Hawks GM Dale Tallon hoped to re-sign both Martin Havlat and Nikolai Khabibulin before they became unrestricted free agents at noon on Wednesday.
The serious interest in bringing back Khabibulin was a pretty strong indicator that Tallon was actively trying to trade goalie Cristobal Huet and the three years and more than $16 million he has left on his contract.
Two teams that need goaltenders – Edmonton and Colorado – were believed to be at least listening to what Tallon was offering. Could defenseman Cam Barker be part of a package with Huet? The Oilers are believed to have some interest in Barker.

Huet Goes Into Hiding

That was Brent Seabrook speaking, as he jokingly stepped into Cristobal Huet’s locker and faced a phalanx of reporters, nearly an hour after his Blackhawks had been whacked 6-1 by Detroit.
The real Cristo, as it turns out, never did show his face, taking refuge in the no-trespassing inner sanctum of the Hawks’ dressing room. At 5:30 p.m., the cut-off point for media access, scriveners and TV types ushered outside, Huet was still back there, hiding.
Pretty bush. Which might also accurately describe the No.2-turned-No.1 Chicago goalie, who gave up five Red Wing goals, bracketed around a second period spent largely on the bench – yanked by coach Joel Quenneville and then re-instated, presumably for a bit of confidence bucking-up.
He’ll need all the bucking he can get, the Hawks teetering on the brink of elimination in the Western Conference final, trailing 3-1 as the series swings back to Joe Louis Arena Wednesday night.

Huet Not An Elite Goalie

The fact of the matter is if I’m an NHL GM and I’m starting up a team and I have one year to win a championship, Huet is not among the top 10 goalies I’d pick to be my starter.
Here are 10 goalies I wouldn’t hesitate picking before Huet: Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Miikka Kiprusoff, Evgeni Nabokov, Henrik Lundqvist, J-S Giguere, Ryan Miller, Ilya Bryzgalov, Tomas Vokoun and Marty Turco.
I’d probably even pick some of this next tier of goalies before Huet: Niklas Backstrom, Vesa Toskala, Marc-Andre Fleury, Rick DiPietro, Tim Thomas, Chris Osgood, Carey Price, Cam Ward, Martin Biron and Kari Lehtonen. That’s why Huet may not be among my top 15.

Something’s Gotta Give in Chicago

There must be a second part to this move.
The Chicago Blackhawks signed goaltender Cristobal Huet to a deal worth $5.625 million per season for four years, THN has learned.
Now, the Hawks still have No. 1 goalie Nikolai Khabibulin on the books for a very cap-unfriendly $6.75 million next year, so something’s gotta give here.
Not only do the Hawks now have quite a lot of cash tied up in goaltenders, but the funny thing about that position is you can only have one on the ice at any given time and most starting netminders tend to want to be out there as much as possible.
On TSN about 15 minutes ago, Darren Pang reported that in his conversation with GM Dale Tallon today, Tallon claimed they would be carrying both goalies into next season. To add intrigue, Bob McKenzie also mentions that Tampa goalie Mike Smith—who just signed an extension earlier today—might now be shopped.

It appears both goalie Cristobal Huet and forward Brian Rolston are headed to free agency later today.
“Yes it looks that way right now,” Stephen Bartlett, the agent for both players, told Sportsnet.ca on Tuesday morning.

Huet Would Like To Remain In Washington

“I’m sure we’ll have a chance to reconvene and continue our discussions,” Bartlett said in a telephone interview. “The flow back-and-forth has been pretty steady.”
Bartlett declined to divulge specifics, but he did indicate that Huet, 32, is seeking a three-year deal. If the negotiations hit a snag, he said, it likely would be over money, not length of contract.

No “Pity Party” for Kolzig

“I’ve had a good run here,’’ Kolzig said Thursday. “And I hope it continues in the next two months.’’
In other words, until the playoffs are over. After that, Kolzig will become a free agent, presenting an understandably murky future for a 38-year-old goalie who lost his starting job just as the Capitals were becoming good again.
“The worst thing I can do is have a pity party,’’ Kolzig said. “I’m not really going to talk about the situation until the end of the year, but it is what it is and I’ve come to grips with it.’’
Kolzig has been supplanted by Cristobal Huet, acquired from Montreal at the trade deadline.

Trading for “Huet was the easiest decision because he played really well for a few years,” McPhee said. “It’s worked out the way we had hoped. He’s playing well and Olie is better rested and playing really well, too.
“We couldn’t be more impressed with how [Fedorov has] handled this situation,” he added. “How great he’s been with our young players, and how well he’s played. And Cooke is playing better than he played in Vancouver.”

Habs Need Huet

The question now is whether to keep Huet or put him on the block. He’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and the Canadiens run the risk of losing him without compensation.
That’s a risk they should take. While Price has demonstrated why he’s the Canadiens’ hope for a bright future and Jaroslav Halak is playing well in Hamilton, the Habs need all their resources if they hope to make a run in the playoffs. It’s a bigger risk if they go into the post-season with a pair of goaltenders with no NHL playoff experience.

Montreal Continues To Go Young

“Carey has his confidence going and I think it would be difficult to go back to Cristobal at this time,” Carbonneau said.
The decision didn’t go over well with Huet, which Carbonneau said was exactly the reaction he expected - and wanted - from the veteran.
“He’s a competitor. He wants to play. I understand that. I’d be disappointed if he didn’t,” Carbonneau said.
Price is becoming the focal point of the Canadiens’ youth movement. When the Habs beat the Leafs, they dressed 10 players who are 25 or younger and there could have been 11 if Guillaume Latendresse had been 100-per-cent healthy.

No Goalie Controversy In Montreal

Huet is aware he and Price are competing for the No. 1 job and said that’s the way it should be.
“It has to be like that,” Huet said. “The coach is going to use the best goalie, the guy who’s playing the best during the games and that pushes me, for sure, to be better and get the job done.”
Price describes Huet as the perfect mentor for a young goaltender, although Huet was at a loss to explain exactly what he does in that role.
“I think the important thing is that I treat him like everyone else,” Huet said. “But you should ask him.”
